I’m partial to the 80s Monte carlos because I had a 1986 SS and they were stout well powered cars just in stock configuration right off the car lot and were pretty easy to make them even better. They also actually looked almost just like the cars on the track and not just because of the head light stickers unlike todays cars. The 80s GM G body frames are still well sought after by race car drivers at small local tracks everywhere Edit: I even typed this before watching the whole video where the guy basically says what I just did 🤘

It wasn’t really completely old time conventional carb like the 70s and early 80s models had. I also wish they would’ve offered the SS in 350 but that’s the timeframe the EPA started complaining about emissions and took all the fun away from sports cars

5:42 As a film geek, it never ceases to blow my mind that Doc was voiced by the legendary Paul Newman. I wonder how many people my age watch this movie without realizing that the character is brought to life by an American cinema legend on the same iconic level as Nicholson, Brando, Pacino, Streep, Leo, De Niro, etc.

The amount of work that went into the back stories is amazing. Paul Newman voicing Doc, Richard Petty voicing the King, Waltrip as race announcer Darrel Cartrip… But it kept going with Cars 3, they got Smokey Yunick’s nephew (I think) to voice the character Smokey, and while I forget her name the first female Cup racer from back in the day was present too. Such a well researched set of movies

Yeah Im not at all surprised they hired a legendary voice actor. What I was surprised about was they picked one that actually had a passion for automobile racing. Gotta say, the 2000-2002 monte carlo is it for me. I loved the modern take on what made the aerocoupe so great. The curved bumpers, wedge nose and unique spoiler. Then the fact that aside from the airdam, the racing version was a 1 for 1 copy of the street model in an era that all the cars were pushing away from the street models.

I know the Monte Carlo Aerocoupe with the big back window was only made in real production cars for the 1986 & 87 model years. Why did NASCAR allow Chevy teams to use it into 1988 & 89? I see DW's 1989 Daytona 500 winner was an Aerocoupe. You'd think Chevy teams would've had to go back to the "regular" Monte Carlo SS for 1988 and until the Lumina was made available. But wasn't there a rule back then about being allowed to race car bodies up to a few years old? Maybe that's how it happened.
@mikebruce17 Жыл бұрын
@TonyM132 you're exactly correct. The rules allowed bodies a couple years old to be uses. There were a few teams that would use a tbird body into the first year or two of the Taurus years. Mostly due to lacking budgets.

That fact that that generation of Thunderbird featured in 4 of the 6 championship contenders going into Atlanta in 1992 only enhances my view of it (only Kyle Petty in a Pontiac and Harry Gant in an Oldsmobile were the only ones in the top six at least mathematically in contention that weren't in a Thunderbird)

1992 was a rough year for Chevrolet in the Cup series. It must be the only year of the modern era in which no Chevy driver finished in the top 6 of the standings. Ricky Rudd was the highest Chevy at 7th in the Hendrick #5. '92 might also be the best year ever for Ford. Has there ever been another year Ford drivers swept the top three in the final Cup standings? I doubt it.

@Tony M that's true, the fact that Dale Earnhardt had one of the worst statistical years of his entire career in 1992 gives an idea of how bad it was for Chevy (he had 1 win, 6 top 5's, 15 top 10's with an average finish of 14.9, finishing only 12th in the standings). It was a bizarre blip on his record in retrospect, 4 championships between 1990 and 1994 (1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994) and the one year he didn't, he seemed to not even care once he was out of contention for the title (possibly explaining his actions on lap 2 of the Hooters 500)

With the 57 Chevy, they were not all "Bel Airs" The was just a trim package level. The famous "Black Widows" were accurately a "150 Utility Sedan" or just "150" for short. They were the base models with no frills and the unique side trim was 150 spec only. Heck even Chevrolet put out a book on the car in 1957 and then every part you needed to make your own black widow and then showed all the steps to convert the car to an legal race car. Fireball Roberts 57 Chevy was a true Bel Air, it was hardtop body (not offered in a 150 trim level), but then also had the extra chrome Bel Air's carried. Paul Goldsmith's number 3 car was actually the middle model between a Bel Air and a 150, it was called the "210" They had a little more chrome than a 150, but alot less than a Bel Air.

It just screams NASCAR looking at it's super slick design, intimidating headlights, and gorgeous paint schemes in a time where the NASCAR market had truly peaked and several great sponsors were even sponsoring winless teams. Jimmie Johnson drove this car to his first 2 of 7 championships and won the Daytona 500 in the SS. The SS won the 500 again in 07 in an iconic finish that almost deserves #1 as the greatest finish in NASCAR behind the 1979 Daytona 500. Dale JR, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Brian Vickers, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, and even CASEY MEARS of all drivers won big in this car. It's safe to say that this badass car was unstoppable during its run time even if it was cut short.

The pre-2015 Charger is the best model of Charger with that angry look. I don’t like what Dodge is doing these days. Why go immediately from gas to electric when you can use hybrid models? Also I don’t like how Dodge has so many discontinued models, the Viper, Avenger, Dart, Journey, Caliber, Nitro, and Magnum. 2000’s-2014 Dodges are the best which is why I put the Charger at #1

Considering I was a kid in watching in the 80s I have a soft spot for a lot of the models from that era. The 83 (I think) Thunderbirds always looked so cool. Out there with all the big, boxy GM cars, the small, aerodynamic bodies almost looked like space ships. I loved the Cutlass from 1988 as well, thanks to the low front end that made the thing look like it was scowling at you, and the unique, wraparound rear window.

JD McDuffie drove a 68-69 Buick Skylark a handful of times between his 67 Buick and a Ford Torino, that takes the cake for me.

That´s a pretty good list for sure. This can be odd but, I'd add the '89 - '94 Chevy Lumina as honorable mention.

Great video. 57 Chevy used in NASCAR was not a Bel Air but a 150. I liked the Chrysler Imperials Buddy Arrington fielded too.

I'm glad to see you have the early 70s Charger on here because that car to me is the most beautiful stock car to ever race. Dressed in blue and red with a Hemi under the hood. Magnificent.

Agree with the 80s Monte Carlos, the later version of the T-birds, the early 70s Chargers, and that Buick. As for Dodge, I prefer the Intrepid body over the Charger body. It more closely resembles the street car. Honorable mention for the late 80s/early 90s Oldsmobiles, especially in the Skoal Bandit colors.

the 2007 Chevys at Michigan were definitely the best looking cup car in existence… no sarcasm… 💀

i didnt like the 06-07 chevy's near as much as i did the 03-05 ones. And even better than both of those, was the late 90's ones (96-99 i think?). But the 06-07 nose just looked squashed down, and that was at a time when they were reeeaallyy twisting the hell out of those things and making them so unsymmetrical for aero purposes (hence the nickname, twisted sisters). they just looked so cockeyed compared to the 03-05

Gotta say, I cheered at your #10 pick. I'm right there with you dude - the 05-06 Dodge Charger was unique and badass. Helps that I've always liked Mopars, and my dad even owns a mid-2000s RAM truck with that distinctive grill style, but man the Chargers looked so cool - and some of my all-time favourite paintschemes, including Scott Riggs' 2006 #10 Valvoline car, were ran on that exact bodyshell.

There's something about the first generation trucks from the 1995 Craftsman Truck Series that I love so much. I'd be interested in your ranking, although it'll be a much shorter list to choose from.

Nothing beats those early 2000s Monte Carlos for me, but you’re one and two are my two and three respectively. Great list.

My Top Ten: 10. Hudson Hornet (Looks like a proper bullet on wheels) 9. 1985 Buick Regal (Classic GM mid 80's body style, but I like the nose of the Buick the most out of the 80's GM offerings) 8. 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (Harry Gant. Skoal Bandit. 'Nuff Said) 7. 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix (The Petty's cars were iconic, Mikey Waltrip's Pennzoil Bahari Racing car too) 6. 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo (The big switch to rounded body lines began here. Some iconic liveries too) 5. 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (GM ended up basing most of their 1980's body lines on this car, but they got it right here) 4. 1996 Ford Thunderbird (Mark Martin's plate track car was the nicest T-bird I've ever seen. They did something special w/ that body) 3. 1996-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix (For every single reason S1apSh0es said) 2. 1970 Plymouth Superbird/ Dodge Daytona ( BIG. ASS. WANG) 1. 1990-1994 Chevrolet Lumina (Because I saw Dale Earnhardt's show car in the show trailer with a fresh coat of wax and mirrors above and below the car like a cheap Pocono honeymoon suite complete with lighting. It was pure, unadulterated sex on wheels)

Can't say I 100% agree with the list, but I'm really glad the '96-'97 Thunderbird made the cut. Definitely one of my favorites, and I used to own a 1997 T-Bird years back. Loved that car, and I still love the styling of it today.

The 2017-2021 Toyota Camry would have been on my list. The Gen 6 may not have raced the best at times, but the Camry looked sleek as hell to me.

I loved the Fusion too, both the racing and street version of the early gen 6. I really caught the tail end of the Gen 4, so for me the Gen 6 overall are the best looking I've saw

Buck Baker's '57 Chevy wasn't a Bel Air; it was a '57 150 as it had the "older style" two-tone trim, similar to the '56 Chevy.

I liked the '03 Gran Prix more than the '98-'02. I personally think that is the best looking gen 4 next to the '06 Charger.
