I have to say that Whitney made the biggest impact for woman of color. She paved the way for "global female pop stars" before her female stars where still in the shadow of men. Before Whitney all of the black female singers that headlined where older, bigger in frame, ect... and after Whitney's debut came the slim fit, pretty face, big voice, small frame era because thats what the music industry shifted towards trying to chase her success. She single handedly broke down the black and white barriers in pop for wemon (as Micheal Jackson did for black men). She paved the way for all the pop vocalists after her, she made Mariah and even Celine possible... Mariah would not be the Mariah we all love today without Whitney laying down the foundation, and Celine would never have crossed over into the English market. Whitney brought forth a plethora of female pop vocalists for generations to come

Swift deserves her place in this list. Between the success she had in two genres, her ability to influence the music industry, the consistent level of the quality of her song, and the shear number of her entries into the top 40, she has earned her place as an icon. Adele is great, but with only 3 (fantastic) albums her spot is on the honorable mentions list. A few years /albums from now, that could change.
