Dream Scenario is one of the best of the year. What a unique concept that's never been shown before tackling issues of cancel culture, fame, social boycott, isolation and discrimination.

I really enjoyed the Irish language film, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-which I don’t think received the theatre distribution it deserved when it was released in Canada and the US back in March. I’m lucky enough to have an independent cinema near me, where I was able to see this beautiful, touching, and most memorable film about childhood, family, love and loss, and the effects of grief on our lives. It’s a bittersweet film that ends on a note of sadness, but also with a promise of hope, and it completely bowled me over emotionally the first time I saw it. I loved “The Quiet Girl” so much, I went back to see it three more times. I can’t remember the last time a film affected me so deeply. It should have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film instead of losing out to “All Quiet on the Western Front” which, as good a film as it is, simply doesn’t measure up to “The Quiet Girl”. I think about this film every day.

Great picks. I'll have to catch up on the ones I haven't seen. One I want to throw out there is technically only a 2023 release because of NYFF, but I'm counting it. Bertrand Bonello's "The Beast." A French film starring Léa Seydoux and George MacKay. Set in 2044, where emotion is a threat to artificial intelligence, humans undergo a procedure to have all emotion erased by eliminating deep-rooted connections to past lives. So, the film takes place in 1910, 2014, and 2044 as a relationship between these two people is dissected through each period. Thanks for all the great content in 2023, Marianna, and have a great 2024.

Some here that I haven't heard of, I'll add to the list. Thanks! Some underrated films that I feel no one really talked about: True Spirit The true story about Jessica Watson who, at the age of 16, became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. But underneath it's really a celebration of nature and family. Linoleum A film about dreaming big and realising what life really is about. Living Based on a 1952 Japanese film, about a man coming to terms with the fact that being alive doesn't mean living. No One Will Save You A sci-fi horror that really surprised me with it's constant close encounters and almost no dialog at all. Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game One of the most surprising films of the year for me, filmed as a mockumentary, it's funny, heartfelt, eyeopening and refreshingly honest.

I wanted to love "Beyond the Sea", but it got a little tedious. I know that is kind of the point, but I lost interest when the writers introduced "why" David wanted to stay. It is such a rote explanation. I would have liked it more if he just fell in love with being alive and free and reaching a point where, after years of giving up on life, he did not want to give that back. That said, I need to add SO many of the movies you named to my "must-watch" list. Thank you so much for this list, Mariana. I hope you have a wonderful 2024!

As I said in my intro, this video is dedicated to great movies that have been unfairly overlooked, under-watched or under-appreciated. Every movie on this list falls under these categories in one way or another. I don't make my videos specifically for other critics or bloggers, and something like "All of Us Strangers" is a movie most people haven't seen which means it hasn't gotten enough attention.
