Fun fact Bobby Isaac was the Intimidator's favorite driver, and was often sited as the one driver Dale didn't want to race against. What's even more crazy is that Bobby Isaac laid down 28 world speed records with his K&K car with very little modifications to it.

To those that dont know, David Pearson only ran the full schedule (or close at least) 4 times, and won 3 of them. Less than 600 total starts. The biggest what could have been in NASCAR history, even if he still had 105 wins
@stonewall01
@stonewall01 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Take 1973 for example. David Pearson only ran 18 of the 28 races but he won 11 of those 18, and finished in the top 5 in 3 of those other 7, finishing no worse than 3rd. The four races he didn't finish in the top 5 he did not finish due to mechanical failures and 1 crash. That is just amazing! *Also he led 2,658 of the 5,338 laps he completed in the 18 races he entered. That is 49.7% of the completed laps. Talk about dominance. He still finished 13th in the final points standings. These stats are from Racing Reference by the way. lol

You can't play the what if game. Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, and Lee Petty all retired early. What if that didn't happen? Look at the driver deaths in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. What if that didn't happen? What if Bobby Allison stayed with Junior Johnson? What if Cale Yarborough didn't retire early and race Indy Cars? What if Darrell Waltrip didn't leave Junior Johnson? You can go on and on and on. Take Pearson's career achievements, double it, and you have Richard Petty.

I genuinely think had Jeff Gordon’s career not almost ended in the late 00s from his back injury, I think he would’ve almost caught or barely passed David Pearson with somewhere between 100-110 wins. I also contemplate how many more wins Dale Sr would’ve gotten if he hadn’t passed in 2001.

Dale Sr.'s average starting position (12.9) is higher than his average finishing position (11.06) The rest of these guys were front-runners. E.g., Darrell Waltrip's avg start: 13.7, avg. finish: 15.12, King Petty: 9.5 start, 11.27 finish, Bobby Allison: 8.5 start, 11.49 finish. Sr. is the only driver I know of who's average finish is significantly higher than his avg. start, meaning he was the best driver (and/or had the best car) DURING THE RACES, as opposed to generating the best qualifying times and starting up front. Sr. had fewer pole positions (23) than the rest of this list, eg Allision had 59, King Petty had 123, Jeff Gordon had 81.

The thing I find impressive is that (in my opinion) Richard Petty is still not the best driver. Dale Earnhardt is. The fact that Earnhardt only had 76 carrier wins and yet tied Petty for 7-time season champion is gosh-Dearn impressive. (see what I did there?) He could have even broken the tie with Petty of he hadn't died in 2001.

If the original format for championship point standings was still in place.. pretty Earnhardt and Gordon would all have 7 championships.. Johnson would only have 4.... Jeff Gordon is still the greatest. Glad I got to witness it all..

@seannolan9857 Жыл бұрын
The Latford system was not the original system. The original system only gave points to the top fifteen, and multiplied depending on race purse. If we'd kept that system, Gordon would probably have the most championships, mainly due to a high number of Crown Jewel wins.

This just proves to me that Richard Petty was the best of a bad bunch. Quality of drivers and how even the cars have been since the mid 80s has really made the talented drivers stand out.

If Petty had retired at 51 like Pearson did, his win percentage would be slightly higher than Pearson's. Hanging on too long cost him in those categories.

Petty shouldn't even be on this list, he was literally like the only driver who's family had money and was able to put WAY bigger motors and parts in his cars that no one else could. You seen what happened when NASCAR made all the cars the same. He flopped.

Some of the older crowd, while definitely upper echelon racers, I feel like should have asterisks next to their names, before NASCAR started cracking down with post race inspections on top of pre race inspections, some of the old crowd were cheating left, right, and center.

richards #s are so inflated with long seasons and being the only team that made all the races back in the day with all the money daddy had. not to mention a lot smaller groups that could comptete vs their cars.... imo jeff gordon is the best ever. he beat the best of the best in their prime. a lot stiffer competition and more of them. back in 40s-70s u had 5-at most 10 guys in race that could win usually.......... rest were just fill ins that almostnever won.
@madmikeschannel8128
@madmikeschannel8128 2 жыл бұрын
That's not really a fair assumption. It is hard to compare eras sometimes. Jeff was awesome but he beat the best of the 90's in their prime. Not the 70's or 80's superstars. Plus he had Hendrick equipment which has made champions of a few other drivers as well and put many in victory lane. I think Jeff is awesome but I can't see how he's hands down better than Earnhardt Sr, Yarborough, or Pearson.
