As a Dutch kid who wasn't able to follow the races live I grew to be a fan of Jeff Gordon, simply because I drove his car in the Playstation game. His car's sponsor was my dad's sponsor as well and they gave me a Playstation and the NASCAR game as a present for my 11th or 12th birthday, but they jokingly told me the Dupont-car had the coolest driver. Something I never doubted ever since that day. I played that game so much that over time I grew to become a fan of The Golden Earring and other bands on the soundtrack.

Dale sr was still competitive at an old age. If it weren't for his passing he could of very well got more good moments to undoubtedly make him #1. WhatiFRacing chase makes championships harder. you literally have to race against only the best drivers. most sports tend to use the regular season as a way to practice and weed out the non deserving, then everything is out on the line in play offs. much better.

Gordon will always be #1 in my book. He was a 4 time champ before the age of 30! Think about that for a minute. Look at how highly regarded Kyle Busch is and he's already 31, so that kinda puts what Gordon accomplished into perspective. And like you said, he would be a 7 time champ if not for the Chase. He's really the only superstar of the sport that was caught in the middle of a massive points change like the Chase.

While not the greatest driver of all time because he lacks the accomplishments, Tony Stewart is the best overall driver of all time imo. You can put him in any type of race car on any kind of track and he'll compete at an elite level.

I can sorta agree with that, too bad they discontinued the IROC races. Would loved to have seen that be a side series to itself. Two nascar tracks, two Indy car tracks two formula one tracks and a track every driver has been on two dirt tracks. Have cars designed that will go fast on all 4 of those type tracks with only slight mods to get them ready. I think To y would have dominated a series like that.

Here’s my issue with Jimmie Johnson: You pointed out if Gordon had raced under the old format his whole career he would have won 7 championships (which I would love to see the data for that.) If that was the case then it would indicate a likelihood that Jimmie would NOT have 7 championships had his career been run under the old formats. Therefore his titles should be diminished.

Jeff Gordon is #1 for me. He is a 7 time champion without The Chase. He won 93 races and had 81 poles. Only Jimmie Johnson will challenge the 93 wins and after Jimmie retires, NOBODY will ever win 93 races again. He has 81 career poles and that will never come close to getting beat in the future. He won 3 Daytona 500's, 5 Brickyard 400's (the most), 6 Southern 500's at Darlington (4 in a row), 3 Coca Cola 600's, 9 Martinsville wins, he won at every track except Kentucky (only ran there 4 times and all were top 10's) and also won at Rockingham and North Wilkesboro (no longer on the schedule), he has a record 9 road course wins (4 straight), has a record 12 restrictor plate wins (most all time in the restrictor plate era), won the Real Winston Million in 1997, won atleast 2 times or more at all but 3 tracks, brought Earnhardt's reign to an end and started beating Earnhardt for championships at age 23, came out of California when all the drivers and fans were still all from the south (now California has more drivers in Cup than any state), only driver to host Saturday Night Live, hosted Live with Regis and Kelly 13 times (only driver to host) and when he retired almost all his competitors said Gordon was their hero when they were younger. He won 47 races in 5 seasons (3 straight years of over 10 wins a season). For example, Tony Stewart won just 2 more races (49) in his 18 year career than Gordon won in only 5 seasons. He already had 52 career wins by his 28th birthday!!! Won races in 21 of his 23 seasons. Still holds the record of 11 poles in 1 season in Xfinity Series. Had 47 wins from 1995-1999. 1995) 7 wins 1996) 10 wins 1997) 10 wins 1998) 13 wins and a modern era record since 1972 1999) 7 wins. Won races with EVERY crew chief he had. He made Hendrick Motorsports the powerhouse it is and along with Hendrick he owns the #48 car and mentored Jimmie Johnson. In 1998 they ran 33 races. He had 13 wins, 26 top 5's and 28 top 10's with an avg. finish of 5th for the whole season (still a record) and set the record for most top 10's in a season with 30 in 2007. He was the first to come into Nascar as a 20 year old and get a top ride immediately. Now everyone gets a top ride at 20 yrs old but he paved the way. He's a legend, icon and hero. And in my eyes, and millions more, he's simply the best ever!!! Mario Andretti and F1's Lewis Hamilton came to Homestead 2015 just to see his last race and be on his pit box!! Jimmie is a great driver, sure pick first ballot hall of fame but you contradict yourself in this video. You reference Gordon would have been a seven time champion without the chase, Jimmie would've only won three without the chase. Moving on, Jimmie started his career with Hendrick when it was built and established as the greatest organization in NASCAR, same can be said about Petty even. Hendrick was even with Childress I think when Jeff started, and Jeff's youth and talent pushed them to the level they was throughout Jimmie career. Dale Sr. started with a brand new team, built it to a champion, then had to start over with Childress and they built RCR together! Imagine Dale Senior throughout the 80s if, in 1980, RCR was where they were by 1987? Senior would've easily won another title. As for pyre driving talent, Jimmie has showed he can drive fast. Kinda butt hurt over NASCAR pulling that stunt to make things more interesting near the end knowing drivers like Gordon that would always have such a higher and consistent point standings near the end would make it more difficult for other drivers to win the championship, but honestly that is all the more reason they deserve it for being that good :) 23 now and been a fan ever since I can remember.

5 in a row and 7 total under a joke of a points system. Do you realize that in 4 of Jimmy’s championship years he was well over 300-400 points behind the leader with 11 races to go. But, reset the points and start anew is the only way Jimmy wins 5 in a row and 7 total. Hell, Earnhardt would have had 12 under that silly ass points system. Not to mention, when he and Knauss broke up, Jimmy never even threatened to win again. If you think Jimmy was better than Dale, it’s obvious you didn’t experience Dale! .....The most races NASCAR has had a season is around 60 to 65 races. Richard Petty even drove in the 1985 season with only 28 races. So 150 races in a year for Richard Petty was impossible in NASCAR. Richard Petty was a Rookie in 1959, and retired in 1992. So he had way more chances to win then everyone else. Career stats 1,184 races, 123 poles, 200 wins, 555 top 5's, 712 top 10's, 7 championships, 7 Daytona 500 wins

The positions of these guys are up for debate like you said, But I think you nailed it man. The reasons for putting the guys where you did. your analysis of Pearson and Petty, spot on. I'm only a few years older than you and most guys that call their selves fans our age know nothing of the reasons why people like petty will always hold a couple of records. My list almost 2 years later is 1.Johnson 2. Gordon 3. Earnhardt 4. Petty. The Top 3 are definitely debatable depending how you look at things, but Petty imo can not be higher than 4 due to the era he drove in compared to when the the other 3. He is great, but he drove in a not so competitive era.

RC RACER 88 I disagree, Dale also races in competitive, but not as competitive era of NASCAR than Johnson did. While some consider Johnson’s Championships invalid because of the Chase, he still proved how good he was and in all honesty if you the playoffs had never been introduced then Gordon would have won 7 championships so I have to put Gordon above Dale. Like I said the top 3 are definitely debatable, but I can’t ignore the era in which they raced. Honestly number 1 should be between Johnson and Gordon

RC RACER 88 I have been watching NASCAR for quite sometime and have watched numerous old races. I’m not arguing with your opinion, but when you look at numbers and teams that were around and also take into account the budget and quality of cars. Johnson’s era had the best cars around in the field. Dale is an amazing driver, but Johnson beats him by a hair the way I see it. But you don’t have to agree with me and that is why this conversation will continue for many years to come in till a driver puts to gather an unbelievable career.

Would have. 7. ...OK. how many CREW CHIEFS were involved in those ( would have been ) 7 ? i love racing, & I like alot. Of drivers that have raced over the years. But ,i don't know of any other drivers that did anything close over years of change like Jeff did......Granted ..If you knew who the champ was 2 races before the end it may have sucked for some ...I think the 24 may have won 7 with 3 or 4 different crew chiefs. .WHO ELSE COULD DO THAT?
