Look, I think we can all agree that the U.S. isn't the only nation that has made great films. However, I'm starting to think that some people deliberately hate on American films, and consider ALL foreign made to be better. "Seven Samurai" will consistently appear in top 5 lists for the 1950's, but it is not necessarily the best movie of all time, the best 50's movie, or even the best foreign 50's movie.

@JohnSpawn110 жыл бұрын
Luke Ellis I understand how some people don't like 2001 a lot and I don't want to question your opinion, but how can it really be overrated? I mean, it was basically the birth of modern sci-fi film, the use of music inspired countless filmmakers and imo the special effects and visuals are still unmatched.

Luke Ellis No, not overrated. I first found the film to be quite nauseatic..in a bad way. But after repeating it many times...it's quite a cinematography landmark.

Looks like you forgot Stanley Kubrick's first masterpiece "Paths of Glory," easily one of the greatest films to come out of the 50s. Another major flaw in this list is that Seven Samurai should be much higher, probably #1. Also, speaking of Kurosawa, where are Rashomon and Throne of Blood, both of which easily beat several of the films on this list.

I think Godzilla: King of the Monsters should've taken its place for Seven Samurai only because: 1. It too was a Japanese film released in 1950s (with one of those characters from the Seven Samurai playing Dr. Kyohei Yamane), and 2. It captivated a great fear of the 1950's with nuclear weapons attained and how everyone feared "WWIII" was just around the corner. This movie deserves some praise, if not for at least the message it gave and the fear it installed on audiences worldwide.
@LightAndDarkMdness0210 жыл бұрын
The thing is at the time the movies didn't make much money and were bashed for using real-life nuclear events in the movie to explain Godzilla's origins, the critics saw this as an insult to the people killed by the nuclear explosions and Fall-out (radiation).

I think Godzilla should've had a place on this list, even if it's a low one. Not only did it have an interesting theme, but it explored that theme amazingly, doing something other monster movies at the time didn't do--show the damage the monster caused. Why do they always have to spoil the end? -.- Even if these movies are old, this list may inspire me to watch them, but not, when I already know the end.
@MekintoshLarja10 жыл бұрын
the movies have been around for the past 60 years. anyway, all watchmojo videos contain spoilers, you should know that by now ...
@Jogoe9610 жыл бұрын
***** I'm just saying it's not necessary to spoil in such videos and I keep watching, because I like the lists. They just should stop doing this.
@Jogoe9610 жыл бұрын
Mekintosh Larja Whats wrong about watching them now for the first time. Just because they're old, doesnt mean I must have seen them, or can't see them anymore, age is no excuse for spoiling!
@mrnocal5 жыл бұрын
I agree. At least lately they've started putting a "spoiler alert" at the beginning of some of their lists. Because of this list I was interested in watching Bridge on the River Kwai, but now I pretty much know the ending so the experience of watching it for the first time won't be the same. They should stop showing the spoilers. I'm 53 BTW, and haven't seen every single movie in the world made before now.
@nl30645 жыл бұрын
If you're 53, and you're still bitching about the stupidest shit that couldn't matter any less, that's really pathetic. Aren't you a little too old to have the mentality of a spoiled child? If you haven't seen literally THE most basic shit from your own generaton, who's problem is that but yours? And before you say it, "and haven't seen every single movie in the world", no one's asking you to, but if you don't know some of the most basic historic titles, kind of fucking wasted existence have you had? How does someone telling you the end negate the actual physical experience of watching the whole entire thing in all its glory? Put aside your spoiled little child mentality and go fucking watch something you should've already seen. Seriously, that's like bitching about the ending of Psycho or Star Wars or something. Enough is enough. How do you know the experience won't be the same? You haven't even experienced it!

Good list. I think my personal favourite out of these may be Singin' in the Rain. I know it's kind of light-weight compared to some of the others, but damn it was fun and charming.

TEN COMMANDMENTS was huge at the time, stunning sets, costumes,special effects ,color clarity. C.B. Demille last film was a must see event in 1956.

OK, I'm usually not *that guy*, but not even including The Seventh Seal as an honorable mention??? And putting The Seven Samurai as #8 only? Those two movies are both rivals for number one movie of all time, along with the usual American suspects, Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Casablanca, and a few others. Jesus Christ. There's no way The Seventh Seal doesn't at least get into a top ten list of its own decade. That's nuts.

Lol at seven samurai at number 8, that movie had a 8,8 on IMDB
@JohnSpawn110 жыл бұрын
IMDB? So what? Forrest Gump also has a rating of 8.8 on IMDB while Citizen Kane (widely considered to be the greatest film of all time) has a rating of 8.5. IMDB is voted on by users and even though most films on that list are great (or at least very good) it doesn't really mean much.
