"You don't understand, I could've had class! I could've been a contender! I could've been somebody!" Man the 50's was a great decade for movies. I would've loved to see Roman Holiday get at least a Honorable Mention. I absolutely love Audrey.

Look, I think we can all agree that the U.S. isn't the only nation that has made great films. However, I'm starting to think that some people deliberately hate on American films, and consider ALL foreign made to be better. "Seven Samurai" will consistently appear in top 5 lists for the 1950's, but it is not necessarily the best movie of all time, the best 50's movie, or even the best foreign 50's movie.

Rebel without a Cause is so underappreciated nowadays. Such a brilliant film, there's so much subtlety in it. It's a shame some people bring it down to just the first teen film. Seven Samurai's too low on the list. Seen all of these except for Streetcar, An American in Paris and All About Eve. And wow, you didn't put Vertigo? Good for you.

Luke Ellis I understand how some people don't like 2001 a lot and I don't want to question your opinion, but how can it really be overrated? I mean, it was basically the birth of modern sci-fi film, the use of music inspired countless filmmakers and imo the special effects and visuals are still unmatched.

Looks like you forgot Stanley Kubrick's first masterpiece "Paths of Glory," easily one of the greatest films to come out of the 50s. Another major flaw in this list is that Seven Samurai should be much higher, probably #1. Also, speaking of Kurosawa, where are Rashomon and Throne of Blood, both of which easily beat several of the films on this list.
@TheListenerCanon
@TheListenerCanon 10 жыл бұрын

Agree with these choices. The thing is that I've seen so many good films from this decade, it's harad to include them all. Some that deserve honourable mentions: Sunset Boulevard (how's this not even in the top 10???) A Place in the Sun Quo Vadis The African Queen From Here to Eternity Shane Roman Holiday The War of the Worlds The Caine Mutiny A Star is Born 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea East of Eden Around the World in 80 Days Giant The King and I The Ten Commandments War and Peace The Old Man and the Sea The Brothers Karamazov Anatomy of a Murder Some Like it Hot Hollywood used to make excellent movies. Nowadays it'd be hard to select such milestones as these!

I think Godzilla: King of the Monsters should've taken its place for Seven Samurai only because: 1. It too was a Japanese film released in 1950s (with one of those characters from the Seven Samurai playing Dr. Kyohei Yamane), and 2. It captivated a great fear of the 1950's with nuclear weapons attained and how everyone feared "WWIII" was just around the corner. This movie deserves some praise, if not for at least the message it gave and the fear it installed on audiences worldwide.
@LightAndDarkMdness02
@LightAndDarkMdness02 10 жыл бұрын
The thing is at the time the movies didn't make much money and were bashed for using real-life nuclear events in the movie to explain Godzilla's origins, the critics saw this as an insult to the people killed by the nuclear explosions and Fall-out (radiation).

Man, it's incredible to think how many spectacular films came out from the '40s-'60s. This is a fantastic list, I cannot get over how great Streetcar, Rebel Without a Cause, Singin' In The Rain and most specifically 12 Angry Men are. I have yet to see #1 but I most definitely will be checking it out soon. Gene Kelly, James Dean & Marlon Brando are three of the greatest-looking distractions to have ever been put on film

Am I the only one who notices how much musicals back then did in one shot is divided through many more today? Singing in the Rain is a good example of this. The stars had to memorize long dance numbers and lyrics and timing before the shot would change. That's talent in its purest form, and it'd be nice if that style could make a comeback soon.

haven't seen many of these but.... 40s seems like a different era. 50s seems connected to 60s, 70s, maybe 80s/90s cinema by the look of this. Seven Samurai is amazing and Ten Angry Men is simple but as good as any flick you'll see in any era. I need to see On The Waterfront. Seems like it would've been my grandparents' version of Taxi Driver/Raging Bull/Goodfellas

I think Godzilla should've had a place on this list, even if it's a low one. Not only did it have an interesting theme, but it explored that theme amazingly, doing something other monster movies at the time didn't do--show the damage the monster caused. During the time of its release, it did leave quite a few people horrified, and we know how popular it became, becoming a pop culture icon.

I agree. At least lately they've started putting a "spoiler alert" at the beginning of some of their lists. Because of this list I was interested in watching Bridge on the River Kwai, but now I pretty much know the ending so the experience of watching it for the first time won't be the same. They should stop showing the spoilers. I'm 53 BTW, and haven't seen every single movie in the world made before now.
@nl3064
@nl3064 5 жыл бұрын
If you're 53, and you're still bitching about the stupidest shit that couldn't matter any less, that's really pathetic. Aren't you a little too old to have the mentality of a spoiled child? If you haven't seen literally THE most basic shit from your own generaton, who's problem is that but yours? And before you say it, "and haven't seen every single movie in the world", no one's asking you to, but if you don't know some of the most basic historic titles, kind of fucking wasted existence have you had? How does someone telling you the end negate the actual physical experience of watching the whole entire thing in all its glory? Put aside your spoiled little child mentality and go fucking watch something you should've already seen. Seriously, that's like bitching about the ending of Psycho or Star Wars or something. Enough is enough. How do you know the experience won't be the same? You haven't even experienced it!

OK, I'm usually not *that guy*, but not even including The Seventh Seal as an honorable mention??? And putting The Seven Samurai as #8 only? Those two movies are both rivals for number one movie of all time, along with the usual American suspects, Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Casablanca, and a few others. Jesus Christ. There's no way The Seventh Seal doesn't at least get into a top ten list of its own decade. That's nuts.
