Sad fact, the actor John Blake had been cast to play the character of Max Rockatansky in what was to be a made for TV series of the movie Mad Max but unfortunately the series was shelved due to his life altering accident. He did have similar features to Mel Gibson. One wonders what they would have created for an hour long weekly dystopian, action, drama but i so wish it had been made.

not exactly car chase movie but perhaps worth mentioning Road games (1981) with Stacy Keach and jamie Lee curtis , the whole movie happens around a Mercedes truck and there some stunts with it

70s and 80s were awesome... 3 drive ins within 15 minutes drive from home and they had all nite specials... all those movies back to back from dusk till dawn... glad i grew up then, even with the harassment from Queensland cops at the time for driving a modified car.

Bring on the Running on Empty Festival at Cobar next week. Goin out burn some wood ducks after the $ 50 slip. You can still get to some of the Running on Empty/ Midnite Spares filming locations today in Sydney. But a few have gone. The final canal chase scene at the end of Midnite Spares was filmed in Sydnem just north of the trainstaion in the old Factory area (now demolished for the light rail). I was lucky to get in there before construction started. In the final scene where the car ploughed in the concrete wedge. If you pause DVD just before car hits concrete you can see a the pulley system used to to pull the car into the wedge. I found 6 dynabolts still in the concrete that secured the pulleys. I took photos.

Nice video. I love the enthusiasm you have for the movie cars and the stories behind them. I know it didn't really feature a 'chase' per se but the list of Aussie car films seems incomplete with out 'The Cars That Ate Paris' from 1974. Any likelihood you'll do a dive on that movie sometime?

Cheers. I am thinking about doing a "Horror Cars" list again, as I have had several mentions of cars missed out on, and it may likely go on that list. Not sure if I can make it for this Halloween as I am looking to get another screen chassis ready for the end of this year. But it is floating around to go on anther list one day.

NIce research behind some of these old Aussie movies, some that even I didn't know existed. I would like to mention that "Chain Reaction" was filmed in and around the abandoned Glen Davis shale mining site. Also, the old ghost town of Glen Davis itself features prominently in the movie with many of the shop fronts in existence and still recognisable today.

Awesome list man. Looks like there are several films out there I need to hunt down and see. Can I give some honourable mentions? The Cars That Ate Paris - with an awesomely modified VW Bug. Which I think inspired a car in Mad Max. The Big Steal - which features a beautiful HQ Monaro. But the focus of the film is a Jaguar. Suburban Mayhem and Two Hands - both feature some awesome cars, but are not car films. And from across the pond, Goodbye Pork Pie (1981)

That screenshot on the VJ charger with Peter Wherrett leaning on the car with the bonnet up, Wherrett was instrumental in the 70s in killing off what could have been the Ford GT phase lV, in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, where Wherrett was the writer of the colum of the motoring section, Wherrett, asked the question... How can government allow these super cars to be on the road, defining a term for the Phase 3 GT as "Widow-maker", due to government pressure, Ford was forced to cancel the Phase lV project, even though they had manufactured all the engine and suspension components for the Phase lV's. Ford, having only allegedly made 3 XA Phase 4's, the rest of the parts went into what is called the RPO83, without notice to Ford car dealers only stating get rid of these cars.

There was a period during the later 70's where the Australian government was giving significant subsidies and tax rebates to companies that contributed towards the making of movies, and every dodgey businessman from Bondy to Skase milked the scheme for all they could. There were some truly awful films made that should have never seen the light of day, some truly awful lines of dialogue mouthed, but a little ray of light there are one or 2 classics out there that would have never been made otherwise. These were known as the 'Tax Break films' . Something like that needs to happen again, because the state of aussie cinema is dismal right now. Also , don't forget the film Malcolm - which stars a Honda 600 with the very special skill of splitting in half and driving as 2 separate cars!

I remember just how amazing Mad Max was Originally especially at the time it came out it was very much a film the struck a cord with the Sub culture of the time Punk and Post Punk cultures were drawn to the film's at least the First two from the original movies. I remember seeing a Pirated Copy in the UK I was to young to see it on the Cinema at the time and this was the Original over dub version with American Voice's and censored for the UK market with an 18 rating then the old X ratings. Those films were such an influence and created some many copies films created a Computer game style that is still going strong to this day. Those original stunts were on the ragged edge of Dangerous safety wise . I am sure one of the Motor Cycle stunt riders died during the making of Mad Max 1 after been hit by his bike during a stunt, if the legend is true his Wife asked from the footage of the crash to be left in the film. I have not seen the new version in the Mad Max series I some how think I will be disappointed because those Original Two films made such a lasting impact on me as a Teenager they were low budget films with what looked like a load of Extra's pulled out of all the local biker bars and Punk Club's and then used in the films. the Stunts were crazy and not faked ok some bits were speeded up but but they were one hell of ride. I worry that the new higher budget film may have lost some of that original magic , just like when I was disappointed with Thunder Dome's more commercial and family friendly approach. I should really own the first two Films on Blue ray I need to add them to my collection I think I had them on VHS once legal copies that is thanks for another informative upload.

For me, if Midnite Spares had a bigger chase scene at the end, and not play the same background music over and over and the over stretched love story where not even after a proper date they talk about getting married. It probably would have taken the two spot. One of my favorite things about Running on Empty was Rebel and the bit where they fix the XY. Today I laugh at the idea of them finding an abandoned XY shell in the bush, but I remember even as a kid in the mid to late 80s out in the country, that was no so unbelievable as you often saw 70s cars just abandoned randomly. Running from the guns lost marks on some of the obvious speed up comedy crashes early in the film and advertising it was better than Mad Max. But still fun film.

Why did they use so many 4-door models in these movies? UGH
@MFPMapFilmProductions
@MFPMapFilmProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Australia did not produce many two doors like the US did. We had 2 door Falcon's in the mid 60s, they did not do so well. Valiant Chargers were the other two door option in the early 70s. And Holden had the Hatchback. Come 72 Ford brought back the 2 door in hardtop coupe form till about 1978. Again, at the time, did not sell a great number of units. Which is why now, Coupes sell for a lot of money. Come 1980s, two doors were gone. We had utes that kept the spirit alive, but the coupe era ended in the 70s. Not many Australian produced convertibles either. If at all. But when we did produce a four door, we built the fastest four door in the world at the time. And we still had a even faster 4-door on the way with the XA Phase IV which could do 170mph on the race track. But the government put an end to that. Only 4 official were ever built and one sold for 2 million. Long story.
