The Psych Show Thanks for this! It's quite an interesting topic. I think all fields have these myths, but psych has more than most. As for questions, I'm curious: what facet of psychology do you wish the general public knew more about? Obviously there are many, or you wouldn't have the channel. But which thing would you most want to communicate to the world?

What is your take on sensory diets / strategies ? I am a school psychologist for k-2 and a preschool chairperson. One of the preschool facilities in my district for students with autism is against utilizing sensory strategies due to lack of evidence/research to support its effectiveness. In addition- What are your thoughts on ABA? All of my research in graduate school and my experience back when I was shadowing a BCBA has lead me to feel very passionate about the effectiveness/benefits of ABA for young kids on the spectrum. I was surprised to see that some educators and parents are against it for their children or students on the spectrum.

that's because people all over the internet preach stuff like "Psychological tricks", "psychology of reading people", "reading people's body language to tell what they are thinking" and that idea doesn't sit well with other people. that's their personal information and if someone can access that it makes them uncomfortable. now being able to read body language doesn't mean u know exactly what a person is thinking or feeling for example. However, the average person feels vulnerable and uncomfortable at that thought, therefore, when they meet someone from the field of psychology they assume that the person would be able to do those things and hence they begin to feel insecure and asks, "are you analyzing me?"

Just to be clear, Salary really depends on the subspecialty you are pursuing within the doctorate level. Neuropsychologists, I/O, and clinical psychologists are usually one of the top earners in the fields making $90k+. Also regarding debt it really matters on the program you attend. For instance getting into a top funded program in the UC system can guarantee you debt free graduation. But of course you have to be one of the top performing students since it's a prestigious program. Plus i know mates here at my UC went on to teach at Medical schools and also treat Patients at the hospital and they earn over $120k. P.S. those are research oriented universities and you gotta keep up with the research to even better your outcome. This was a great video overall for a brief overview of misconceptions in the field.

Yup, I agree with your comment. One more factor to add in here is cost of living. Some of the best paying jobs also happen to be in cities with the highest cost of living.

I love your videos, and thank you for sharing this psychology information as you do. I am a professor and shared this video with my students in intro psy this semester. Although we actually did review several of these ideas in class, it is striking to me that they forgot and thought this was all new info. :) I am concerned, though, that MANY of them seemed to pull out the info about master's degreed (probably not a real word but using it anyway) psychologists in other countries but only half heard this and are saying that they had no idea that psychologists didn't need a doctorate. Given that so many of them did not listen to this well, I am actually a bit sad that this piece was introduced in this video. I suppose I just wanted to comment about this error that I am seeing come up over and over again in their reaction assignments.

How often do you use statistics? And how do you use them in regards to helping a client? If at all used. Good video! And thanks again!
@drali
@drali 5 жыл бұрын
I most often use my stats training when I'm reviewing research and assessments. Just this morning I had to evaluate research related to a specific type of treatment and determine if I should recommend this to one of my patients. I also sometimes use statistics when I'm understanding measures that I give to my patients. I don't often do neuropsychological assessment or educational assessments, but statistics are used with assessment when I perform that role.

Hey doctor ali , so i want to major in psychology and become a clinical psychologist just like you and ive always been facinated with psychology + i really wanna be able to help people but my issue is that im super shy and always anxious around people and i feel like thats gonna cripple me in the future with clients and make me look unqualified for the field of psychology no matter how disciplined and determined i was to help them . Ps im really trying to get rid of my social anxiety but no matter how much i improve i still believe that its not enough especially that people expect those majoring in psychology to have it all together .

Great video, but not all psychologists in the U.S. are doctorates. I live and have a private practice in Vermont. This is a state (among several others) that licenses Masters- level psychologists. My title is "Licensed Psychologist - Master". The only other title here is "Licensed Psychologist - Doctorate." Also, I had to pass the EPPP with the same score as a doctorate level in order to be licensed. So, basically in Vermont I can do EVERYTHING that a PhD/PsyD can do - except that I get paid less! :-(

The biggest psychology exam in the United States is the psychology GRE. This is a test many graduate programs (masters or doctorate) use for entrance, along with the general GRE which measures math and verbal skills. Beyond that, the big psychology test is the EPPP. That's a licensing exam all psychologists who practice in healthcare settings need to take.

What classes would be important to look out for in college if I want to be a neuropsychologist? I’m in my second semester of junior year (i live in california) and I think psychology is the only field that I am really interested in. I’m just not sure how to get into it because I don’t have any connections with people doing it right now. I think I want to be a clinical psychologist (working with patients is okay with me, I’m most interested in the gathering and interpreting data part/test administration). I’m not really looking to be a therapist. But I’m taking a human anatomy and physiology class + a psychology class in High School right now and both have made me interested in the brain/brain disorders and seeing their affects on our psychology. Any tips on what skills I should start focusing on harnessing/college classes that would be good to take (math? IT? language?) if I want to go into neuropsychology? Even school suggestions would be so helpful in my research! Thank you so much ^_^

No it would not. I strongly feel that life experience is important, by this age it can add a precise and concise approach - you are not there to ‘eat your lunch and look at the boys ‘ meaning it probably is a well thought plan for most- especially as it would take at least 6 years of study to be a clinical or family/child psychologist, in my part of the world NZ. Not for the faint hearted 😀.

I wonder if people asking about whether you have kids are asking less out of a concern that you have to be similar to them in order to help, but perhaps more as a way to judge how similar your experiences may be. You mentioned that you use both training and your own experiences, and it's relatively easy to see a degree and think "ok, this person has training," whereas getting a sense of someone's personal experiences requires asking. Just a thought I had while watching.

Sir I have a question can a psychologist from one country treat someone from another country? Please reply. Thank you
@kathymorrison6845
@kathymorrison6845 3 жыл бұрын
So I can maybe help with this although I may not be him. It really can be both yes and no? In theory, a licensed psychologist should be taught similar things and trained in similar ways to help treat someone, regardless of country. HOWEVER, because of licensing requirements and differences in standards of practice, someone licensed in one most likely will not be allowed to treat someone in another, at least till they complete the necessary requirements and receive the license there. Even within the US, with a license in one state limits you to practice within the specified state, and you would need to complete additional licensing if you want to practice elsewhere. Hope this helps!

I'm not too familiar with postgraduate diplomas. My guess is they're re-specialization for individuals who already have an advanced degree (that isn't clinical psychology). Unless their degree is a doctorate you can't be "called" a doctorate.

On #7, this actually does matter to me. I have come out of fundamentalist religion, and I have a lot to unpack about that experience. When I suspect my therapist might be religious themselves, I feel like I have to educate them on fundamentalism as well as why it was traumatic for me, and my own journey out, while also being careful not to shit on their deeply held beliefs. I almost feel like I have to justify my experience to them on top of explaining so much backstory. And even when I do, I get a look that says "I'm trained to be empathetic, but I don't really get it" and they don't ask good followup questions about it. When I speak to a therapist who I know has deconverted themselves, or exited a cult, or at least has a lot of experience working in this area, it's SO MUCH easier to talk to them when I don't have to explain so much background. They just get it. They put me at ease, and they understand how to discuss it, and understand why my experience could be traumatic. It's a unique niche, and I don't expect every therapist to have expertise in this area, but for me as the client, it makes all the difference in the world whether or not we can start with that foundation.

Same not to mention I always draw people with issues to me! My bf says it’s because I’m an empath. Personally this is why I want to work with trauma and abuse due to having conquered that mountain myself.

Hi there my name Shariff I am a LMSW and in the future I was thinking about getting a psy’d most likely after I become an LCSW because I feel the psy’d would Give me more tools to better help my future client’s. My question to you is do you feel a PsyD program would provide better training then just working as a LCSW?
@drali
@drali 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, Shariff, and welcome to the field of mental health! A PsyD program can be a big investment of time and money. After you become a LCSW, you might want to focus on additional training at this level. For example, getting extra training in an area you'd like to specialize (e.g. dialectical behavior therapy). If you still think you need more, then I might consider another graduate degree. I hope this helps!

I think under misconception is all psychologist are non religious. I've seen many things on how psychology and religion cant exist at the same time and I find this interesting. I graduated from a Christian college with a bachelor's degree in psychology, and know many people who practice psyc and are practicing Christians.

Sir, I have done my Bachelor's in psychology from India. I want to pursue my masters in the US. Keeping in mind the changing job prospects for the international students, do you think that it would still be a safe option for students like me to get into US?

Right now is a difficult time to be an international student in the US. I don't know much about that experience. But I would look into this resource: www.apa.org/pubs/books/4313017.aspx.

How do I tell my therapist that I don’t like it when she uses personal examples to relate to what I’m talking about?
@drali
@drali 6 жыл бұрын
I would say exactly that, "I don't like it when you use personal examples related to what I'm talking about", and then explain why that is. Be sure to describe the thoughts and feelings that come up for you when she describes personal examples. It's a great opportunity for your therapist to understand you better and for you both to improve your relationship with each other.

Any tips or tricks for people who have a hard time verbally communicating, i.e. they know what they want to say but they cannot speak it, the words don't come out. Thank you.

If you can prepare in advance, write down a short outline of what you want to say and bring it with you. OR practice the conversation in advance until you become more confident. If this continues to be a problem, you can always have a neuropsychologist evaluate your communication ability to identify if there is a problem.

Really? I saw the job listings for a Ph.D/PsyD psychologist in my area (LA) and the salary is over $100k. Am I just lucky to live in a good area or is this false information?

The data I reference are national averages. There're always going to be regional differences, particularly as they relate to cost of living which is much higher in California.

One of the biggest myths I have ever heard about psychologists was ironically in a Bible Presbyterian church many years ago, of the fundamentalist bent, which went as goes: psychology is anti-Christian and psychologists conduct their therapy sessions with clients by asking them to lie down on a couch while telling them to let it go and forgive themselves.

WhAt is the key difference between a counsellor, a therapists and a psychologist?
@drali
@drali 5 жыл бұрын
Counselors tend to help people with transitions in their life and can have a variety of degrees. Therapists focus on treating mental illness and can have a variety of degrees. Psychologists have a doctorate in psychology (in America, in many parts of the world can have an masters) and can focus on a variety of subfields in psychology. Some counselors are therapists and could also be psychologists...so the titles don't necessarily tell you much.

The one pysychopathology suffered by all clinical psychologist is CLEARLY workoholism. I say that only because it is true, the competitiveness of both PhD an PsyD Clinical programs is utterly enormous, and nothing short of utter obsession and perpetual motion is required to even stand a chance of gaining acceptance into them.
@drali

There is a culture of work, work, work in psychology and grad school. In the clinical fields, many of us also struggle with a greater sense of responsibility to others which can cause problems too. I "speak" to that a little bit here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKCcgWOnqM9oY6s.

it is a third party that pays and this means that the psychotherapy work is done by msw many times and that might be the better degree to get to make a living. this is considered hard to return your investment if you look like this guy any doctor will refer to you but some people have to find a special niche.
