That's as may be, but as an athlete in a sport with such a clean image, one needs to keep up to date with banned substances, so in that respect one could argue she should have been a little more vigilant in making sure she knows what's allowed and what isn't. Having said that though, I do feel it was an honest mistake, and hope the itf are lenient with her.

Maria is far from the only athlete to use Maldonium. Dozens of Eastern European athletes have been caught since the ban went into effect on Jan 1, 2016. I was on Maria's side after her press conference because it sounded like an honest mistake, but after learning more about the matter, I don't completely buy her explanation. Whether or not she and her team "slipped up" and didn't read the banned substances list -- which was put out three months before it went into effect -- I think she was aware of Maldonium's effects and used it to her advantage. Yeah, it was stupid that she and her team let her continue to take the drug, but that's the risks you take when you play with fire.

Every sport seems to have an issue with doping, especially in football. The problem is that very little is done to try to curb it considering how long these associations have been around. They're all quick to address it, but no actual solutions have been made. Depending on what the ITF does, I'm going to assume that she will face a 2-year suspension from the sport at best. Will the tennis world welcome her back should she decide to return after her suspension? Probably, but not in the same light.

There are several points that need to be made because, quite frankly, Sharapova is one of the greatest female tennis players of all time. Meldonium was legal until 2016 and, therefore, it makes no difference how long she was using it beforehand and we don't know what other players were using it (and any moral argument is truly ridiculous). Furthermore, it is unreasonable to think that Sharapova would have continued using it had she been aware of it's change in status in terms of it's legality. Also, tennis is an extremely mental game and if you actually took meldonium for a semi-long period of time you would know that meldoniums only real advantage is that it makes you far less sore in the muscles after matches. It does not make you less tired during a 3 hour match and it does not give you Superman like energy. Tennis requires a huge range of skills and had she been taking steroids, let's say, it would have made her stronger. But she is already one of the hardest hitting, most penetrating players on the tour. So even if she was taking meldonium for an advantage, which I'm sure she was, it does not discount the fantastic parts of her game and it would be a shame if people credited her entire career to meldonium.

13blanket the problem is that in tennis a slight advantage as with a drug like this is the difference between winning and losing. Look at the points difference in matches and it is usually only two or three points across a two hour match. Any little edge gets you a win in a tight match and masha is famous for pulling out tough three setters
