I'm pretty sure that the Layton series is one of the most underrated series ever. It has amazing story, beautiful cutscenes and lots of cool puzzles. I am so glad that he put it on his list. Really hope for another trilogy.

I agree with the pokemon one. I wasn't expecting much from it considering it wasn't my favorite region and X and Y had recently come out, but I also can't stop playing it. I love how it starts off as well, where your main character is playing the old version on their 3DS.

I honestly thought 2014 was a pretty good year for games. The Wii U and 3DS obviously did well since that's where most of the attention goes for good games of 2014 but there were many other good games, even the Vita did well if you're into niche titles and we must not forget things like Alien Isolation and even Farcry 4. People just focus on the few moments that AAA games passed out drunk at launch and the times Ubisoft turned up late and vomited instead of looking at the truly great games of this year.

TROPICAL FREEZE!!! Sure platformers might be a dime a dozen, but the monumental amount of effort put into that game made me so happy. Retro really treated the DKC series with the love and respect it deserves, and it's easily one of the best platformers I have ever played.

Shantae and the Pirates Curse,. Dont even get me started! I strongly stand that is one of the greatest sequals to a game ever. It brough back a bunch of enimeys from the first game while upgrading the second games graphics. Shantae has all these cutsy adorable phrases (my favorite being "Super Pike Ball!!") The music is AMAZING and the new look with all the characters is spectaular. Teaming with Risky was a twist, but it made for a spectacular adventure.

Honestly, though I'm more of a PC guy with a fondness of Pokemon, holy crap OR/AS was probably one of the top 5 games I've ever played. It took a game with a pretty crappy story, very little post game, and generally not great anything, and turned it into an incredible game with tons of post game, the post game stuff after beating the E4 with Professor Birch (game highlight right there), and just a generally better made story. The Delta Episode was INCREDIBLE!

Honestly Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were good games but a few thing were left out that it needed such as trainer customization and as a person whose first game was Emerald the missed out Battle Frontier!

Since I haven't seen it yet in the comments, I just want to say that Persona Q was an amazing game. The gameplay was fun with a lot of choices for your party and Personas, the characters and there dialogue was hilarious and the little references to Persona 3 and Persona 4 gave me so much glee, and the story was so much higher then my expectations ! (To be honest I should've expected more since this is Persona we are talking about) I packed about 125 hours into the Persona 3 storyline, doing each side quest which I found were all worth while, and then immediately dove into the Persona 4 storyline to play it again. It's defiantly in my top 10 for this year.

Just want to confirm that Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS are the only games that came out this year, that I payed full price for. And *dang* the $40 for the 3DS version, and the $60 for the Wii U version were worth it.

I absolutely LOVE Nintendo games, there is a pc game based on Final Fantasy. If ypu haven't played it yet, you certainly should. It's called Epic Battle Fantasy 4. It has a great soundtrack, good gameplay and a whole lot of humor and many references. It is my favorite game and you don't really need to play the previous games in the series (but I do recommend you play them) to know what's going on. Anyway I liked the video and keep ip the good work!

Nice list, I think I will be picking up a WiiU in a few days or so, so this video gave me some good ideas on what I should consider. Hopefully though 2015 will get away from the side scrollers and move on to third person action/adventure based games.

Smash Bros, it's good to see a decent fighting game on the 3DS, the ones it had nearer the 3DS's launch weren't great, except for DOA Dimensions, which is highly underrated, and is actually pretty cheap on Amazon at the moment, so I really recommend checking that out. The final fantasy music one I just... I can't... those dead eyes, those triangle noses, they look like voodoo dolls of the characters, it's creepy. Shovel Knight and the Shantae games look really good -- I love the settings and character designs and it looks like it could be a lot of fun... if I were any good at platformers. I'm stuck on the second boss fight of Cave Story, and I've still not got past World 5 of New Super Mario Bros. DS (that's one tough tank-driving mole). I've just never had the reaction speed for these games, it's always been my main failing in sports too. Incidentally, generally in Europe we've been getting these games later than you in America. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse isn't out yet over here. Bravely Default was probably an exception because of the American audience wanting the characters' costumes redesigned to be less skimpy. I've had the previous Layton game (the "Mysterious Mask" or something like that?) for a while now and haven't really had time to play it beyond the first chapter. So far I'm a little disappointed that the puzzles aren't more relevant to the actual story -- I expected them to be more about, say, figurine out locks and finding clues rather than making a toy robot and playing a board game -- but I may go back to it when I have the time, it might just be that those puzzles are warm ups for later ones that have more to do with the story, I'm hoping that's the case at least. Not so keep on the JRPGs myself, their fighting mechanic feels clunky I think it works more for pokémon because it's basically a sport, so having set rules of competition and turn based fights makes sense, and being able to catch new pokémon along the way makes grinding more bearable, but in a game where you're fighting to save the world... turn based combat just doesn't make much sense, jt breaks the flow of the game, and level grinding can become kind of a chore. Kirby and Yoshi just freak me out -- they eat their enemies ALIVE (Yoshi did this far less in the Mario games, generally spitting out koopas it grabbed in its mouth to attack others, but I mean more in his standalone titles). These cutesy little critters come along, swallow up their enemies and either steal their powers or encase them in an egg that they then throw as a weapon. That's some freaky shit right there, if you'll pardon my Old English. I do not feel that these themes are suitable for children. Vore is not "charming". Haven't played Mario Kart 8 but Mario Kart 7 on 3DS was surprisingly good, the analogue circle pad is a lot easier to control carts with than the old N64 controller, which is the last time I played Mario Kart before the Wii version. I actually like the fact that gamefreak make remakes of the older games -- it gives people like me who didn't get to play the originals (either through being too young or in my case not having a gameboy due to the cost at the time) a chance to play those regions we missed out on, and for me it was great to play Kanto and see all the pokémon I remember from the cards and cartoons I had when I was a kid, and in full colour rather than black and green, and the improvements and extra post-game features added to the games makes it great for oldschool pokémon fans to play those regions again. Alpha Sapphire I've been a little disappointed with, in that it still had "cities" that consist of two houses any a gym with grass roads and not even any extra background to make it look bigger, whereas X and Y the towns were often still quite small but the detail in them made them feel more... real, if you know what I mean, they felt more "lived in", I suppose. I'm actually hoping that there _will_ be a Pokémon Zed version that adds the ORAS megas to Kalos and improves the post-game for X/Y, maybe giving Zygrade some actual story arc rather than just being a post-game legendary. Sooo... now that I've proven I'm an avid procrastinator, better get back to my paperwork.

I was not sure about ORAS because the main story was quite short but it was a great POKEMON game. I loved the DexNav but I found trying to get all the legendaries boring and I could not be bothered to find how to get them myself. And having to connect to the Internet to find secret bases and mirage spots sucked because I could not connect to the Internet when I was out. This is a major problem for Pokemon because Pokemon was designed to be portable! Also this is my longest KZbin post.

I keep seeing people putting Bravely Default on these lists and I'm sorry, but as brilliant as it is for a while, yeah, once you get to those abysmal final chapters, it just totally trips over on itself and becomes absolutely unbearable, and it doesn't help that from there on the story is totally predictable anyway so trudging through those final chapters isn't even rewarding at all. Hopefully Bravely Second fixes this massive issue and we can have an actual good game with these brilliant designs and mechanics. (Also, Microtransactions? Really?) Tropical Freeze is hella underrated. I understand people are burned out on 2D platformers, but seriously, if you get ONE 2D platformer for Wii U, get... well, Shovel Knight, but if you get TWO 2D platformers, get Tropical Freeze.

I suppose it depends on your tolerance. I think the game is utterly fantastic and while it would be a much, much better game without chapters 5-7, I didn't think they brought down the game all that much. They went by quickly, and I thought the last chapter is phenomenally good. The battle system and mechanics are simple, but fun with all sort of combinations and strategy. I really enjoyed the story and characters, both the interaction among the main four and the characterization of the Asterisk holders. I find the final reveal in the story a total blow away, and love how they use your Friends for the final battle. The music is exquisite as well. Easily the best OST on the 3DS and is has quickly become one of my most favorite video game soundtracks of all time. It's a crying shame that Revo isn't doing the music for Bravely Second I consider Bravely Default to be my most favorite current 3DS game. I would and kind of do consider it my Game of the Year, but I only played five games that came out this year. :P

I made an mistake and started playing Fantasy Life after starting to play OR/AS. Playing a very deep RPG and comparing it to Pokemon... I just couldn't have fun anymore playing Pokemon. It was just plain boring. I need to come back to it later I guess. But besides Bayonetta and captain Toad, I really really loved Famtasy Life!

only problem I'm having with smash 4 on the WiiU is the lack of an adventure mode... They go big in Brawl, then all of a sudden there is none... it's really disappointing, cause I loved the subspace emissary so much. I probably replayed that thing over 15 times.

If we has gotten a mode like the sunspace emissary the game would have come out so much later. The SSE cause brawl to he delayed twice and they just didn't want to put so much effort into the mode that would have taken a really long time. They just focused on the core game

I'm having the opposite problem with ORAS; I was expecting to be playing it a LOT, but for some reason I can't really get invested in it like I have with almost every previous Pokemon game (with the possible exceptions of X/Y). I want to get really into it, but I just can't.

I'm kind of the same way, but the weird thing with me is...I loved X and Y. I loved (almost) everything they did with it. I loved the visuals, I loved the customization options and I loved all of the enhancements. I jumped right into Pokémon-Amie and Super Training and was doing it with every Pokémon I had. But with ORAS, I took forever to beat it and I'm STILL putting off going back to play the Delta Episode. It might be because Hoenn was always my least favorite region (both in terms of Pokémon variety and region design)...and I never once even went into Pokémon-Amie or really did anything but the main story and catching Pokémon. I don't know what it is...but I'm not enjoying myself that much. I realized that I was just dragging myself through the game.

I honestly feel that Mario Kart 8 is a bad game and I do not understand the fascination people have with it. The character roster is incredibly padded. Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach? 5 babies? ALL THE KOOPALINGS? Where are Diddy, Bowser Jr., King Boo, Petey Piranha, Birdo, ROB? These are characters that were in previous games that could have helped fill the roster instead. Hell, with Tropical Freeze out we could have had Dixie and Cranky plus an icy DK Jungle track for a little cross-game promotion. I find that the AI is over-aggressive towards the player to the point that they don't attack each other if they can hit the player. The battle mode is awful. The lack of arenas really hurt it a lot to the point that it's not worth it. They don't even give you the choice of all the tracks, which feels like a pointless limitation if we're going to be fighting on the tracks. Also, the DLC is kinda poor, but it came in a bundle so it's not too bad. If we're going to have a pack themed around Zelda, why do we have two more clone characters when we could have Ganondorf and Zelda instead? There were some good tracks in there (Mute City, Hyrule, Excitebike) but why is there only one Zelda themed track? There is a dragon themed track, why is it not based on Volvagia? If we're getting the Blue Falcon, why are we not getting Captain Falcon as a racer? I'm not really looking forward to the Animal Crossing pack for the same reasons. Dry Bowser, plus we'll probably only get one or two Animal Crossing tracks and kart parts. It feels like such a waste of potential. Hyrule Warriors has far better DLC so far, with extra characters, weapons, and scenarios. Not to mention new Adventure Maps, costumes, and such. Also, these are little things, but I really hate that you can't drag an item any more to collect a different one, and I really hate that there are no lap times or overall times outside of time trials. In the end, the Mario Karts I've played the most are Double Dash and DS, and I think they are much better. Just because a game is pretty, doesn't mean it's good and all these things above severely hamper my enjoyment of the game. Sorry for the rant.

I've only played it twice, once when it was an early demo a year before it came out and once at a gaming convention recently. It was really enjoyable from what I've played, but I have to agree on the stupid character roster. Why are there so many babies? I thought 3 was bad enough. Why more? I haven't played any battle mode, but if it's as limited as 7, I'll be disappointed. I think Wii had the best variety. And DS is awesome. I wish the Mario Kart series would bring back the missions, it was really cool for when you got tired of racing and collecting stars.

I hate the camera a lot of the time. It can screw over anybody trying to turn (most often on anti-gravity parts), and also the item spawns. Oh god, please NO. It was bad

1. Character's don't even matter in a racing game. The thing that matters is courses, which are spot-on in Mario Kart 8. 2. It's pretty hard use aggressive AI against a game with an amazing online mode. Also, I had no trouble with this at all, but Mario Kart is so RNG-based it doesn't really matter. 3. The Battle Mode sucks. That I can agree with. 4. I think you misinterpret the DLC. They're not themed around universes, they just happen to have elements from those universes. Logically, a Zelda pack would have only Zelda stuff, but Mario Kart 8 didn't do it that way. Frankly, it really doesn't matter whether it's Gobblegut or Volvagia, because the track is fun to race in. Honestly, Mario Kart 8's real problem is that its item balance is fucking terrible. I'm not trying to say Mario Kart 8 is better than Double Dash or DS, I'm just saying that you disliked it for the wrong reasons.

TheStupidTriforce The characters do effect the way your kart or bike plays, so they do kinda matter. It just would have been nice to have more variety instead of a bunch of clones and babies and koopalings that no one asked for. I have terrible luck, so I honestly can't tell if the AI just hates me or not, but that's my experience with the AI. If they have a red shell and I've just been hit, instead of passing me and hitting the person ahead of me so that they can get ahead, they'll attack me just as I recover and I'll lose even more places. Also, I don't actually hate the DLC. It's very good value for money and recommend it to everyone who enjoys the game, and getting the season pass nets you some extras which is nice. Dragon Driftway and Ice Ice Outpost are the only tracks I don't like in the DLC. My main issue is that I felt it was a huge waste of potential. I just wanted more of the theme than we got. I can agree that I probably let things bother me more than they should, though. When I've played against friends these problems don't pop up as much, but I enjoy strong single-player experiences (a reason I'm not a Smash fan) which I feel wasn't the case in this edition of the game.

I'm really glad Tropical Freeze made the list. It's my personal game of the year, but.. like you said.. it's been overlooked because there are already so many 2D platformers on the WiiU (Rayman Legends, NSMBU, Super Luigi U etc). Still, great list! Expected nothing else :)

This was an awesome year to have a Wii U! My favorite games of this year are: 6) Captain Toad Treasure Tracker - The SM3DWorld toad levels were fun some I'm happy they expanded on it and made very fun and some challenging puzzles. 5) Bayonetta 2 - Just bought this game last week and it remines me a lot of the Devil May Cry series, which I love. 4) Hyrule Warriors - My brother and I are both fans of Zelda and hack n slash games, and this did not disappoint. 3) Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U- Don't have the Wii U one yet (buying it this month) but the 3DS is addicting once you got used to the controls. 2) Mario Kart 8 - Playing with my brother and online plus the DLC makes this game nonstop enjoyment 1) Pokemon ORAS- I can't put that game down I don't have a full top 10 because these are the only games of 2014 I bought.

Ary Kumar I can understand why you have Smash as number 1. Smash 4 is very addicting, especially playing as the Miis. But I love the Mario Kart series more and MK8 has just knocked it out the park for me with its aggressive CPUs and fun tracks. As for Pokemon ORAS, 3rd gen is my favorite generation of Pokemon and Pokemon Emerald is my favorite Pokemon game and to see that gen in X and Y graphics made my gaming year.

There was this one game that came out last year only on the 3DS and 2DS called Fantasy Life. It was a really fun game where you could pretty much do whatever you wanted (when you weren't following the main story). You could create your character, level them up to be an unstoppable fighting force, make various things to help on your journey (weapons, armor, healing items etc.), there are tons of side quests, you can buy multiple houses and decorate them however you want, and you can buy a dog or cat and use them in your party. The game also has a fantastic multiplayer feature. The story was pretty deep and compelling (I cried at the ending), the characters were interesting, and it has some of the funniest writing I've ever seen in a game. It also had anime style graphics and cut-scenes that looked really good for a third party title. I highly recommend it if you can find it on the e-shop, it's worth it.

Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire is, honestly, a disappointment for me. It is not a bad game, and it is a good game, though still a disappointing one. I dislike Mega Evolutions, the new EXP Share (which both affect the difficulty scaling greatly),the 3D effect, and the changes to the plot. I honestly believe that Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire are better games.

Mega Evolutions make Pokemon cooler, the EXP Share makes Pokemon more accessible for new players, and you don't have to use the 3D. The changes to the plot, meh, I'd rather they'd remake Emerald. All in all, it's a pretty fun game.

Then just play them, Mega Evolutions gave old pokémon (Pidgeot, Beedrill etc) a new chance to be useful again, the new EXP share can be turned off, the 3D effect in most 3DS games is shallow and I don't use it anyways (it also drains the battery), the plot was much better IMO, especially Delta Episode and team Aqua/Magma are so different, not a color swap anymore, also revisiting Hoenn in these graphics is so much fun,
