In my opinion, the Olympic Class sisters and Normandie were the most beautiful, elegant, and luxurious ocean liners - it’s a shame that most of them met such tragic ends. The United States was technically the most impressive in terms of engineering and outright speed and it is still with us to this day, albeit in a very deteriorated condition. (I still have hope that it will be restored to its former glory someday!) I would also have to include the smaller, but heroic, Carpathia as my favorite one funnel ship.

I've unfortunately never had the chance to be on a real Ocean Liner, but I did get to watch the Queen Mary 2 when it passed by my city during its anniversary run. absolutely beautiful, haunting to see such a vessel running among the more "modern" looking craft. she did pass by again in April this year but we had just started lockdown and police were looking for any excuse to be brutal during that time, so couldn't risk it. it's shame because she apparently docked here unlike prior where she only passed. I wonder if we will ever get ocean liners running normal in the future, I understand the cost etc but it would be a wonderful thing to have again.

Well, mine would be: 1. SS Normandie - she is just too breathtakingly beautiful. For me, a machine of divine properties. 2. RMS Queen Elizabeth - The QE looked strong and yet, had a kind of welcoming aura. When comparing RMS Queen Mary to her and Normandie, feels like QM was born outdated.... 3. RMS Mauretania - A great combination of sleek early liners design and 4 funnels (with those slighty allocated to the front half) that really catches my eye. 4. RMS Queen Mary 2 - I just love the "modern ocean liner" rendition that Queen Mary 2 is and, being born long after the end of the great liners, it is the last string holding this legacy alive to our generation, so it kinda holds a natural beautiful aura. 5. RMS Titanic - I belive that the Olympic Class had the best design of the early superliners, and in regard to that, Titanic peaked among the other two. The gentle curve of the bridge is so strong and asthetic that I have a hard time trying to find Aquitania and Imperator's Class beautiful with their "flat faces"...

Here is my top ten, I hope you enjoy :) 10. Oceanic II - I really love her design and she was a bridge between the late 1800s ship designs and the early 1900s ship designs. I really like the fact that she didn't have a sister ship because it makes her unique 9. Mauretania II - I have a soft spot for intermediate liners, not as big as a superliner but still elegant. I like her funnels and she has more of a cozy vibe to her 8. Queen Elizabeth - She has such a powerful presence and had a really clean look to her, she imo was the ultimate superliner 7. Britannic (1874) - The first Britannic took the proven design of the Oceanic Class and improved it, her and her sister were wonderful ships astheticly and I love her funnels 6. Britannic (1929) - The third and final Britannic was a really good looking ship, she looked very tough and utilitarian but still had a charm 5. Oceanic III - Although she was never finished, from looking at her concept pictures I believe she would be the best ship of that time and its a real shame she was never built 4. Titanic - BALANCE, that's what I see in Titanic. She was sleeker and more modern looking than the Olympic but not as modern as the Britannic, and was the perfect balance between the two designs 3. Baltic (1903) - I had a tough time choosing between her and the Adriatic but Baltic's story wins out. I love Baltic's design but also her personality, always there to give a helping hand 2. United States - United States was (and still is) a symbol for the USA, she was built in one of the USA's most impressive times inovation wise. She had a very sleek design and it would be a treat to travel on her 1. Caronia (1947) - The Caronia is my favorite liner of all time her color and design are perfect in my eyes and her sleek look was beautiful. I feel like she could go anywhere and do anything

I almost put the Baltic over the Oceanic, the Big Four were so instrumental in WSL's bottom line and so very successful for the time. The Adriatic was the largest and most luxurious but by it's launch it was just too overshadowed by the Lusitania. In the end though, I had to step it back to the Oceanic, I know not a Big Four, but was just such a huge step forward for the time and seems to have a lot in common with the Big Four.

I have the same feelings with your choice of Titanic. Most people would think that choice is unoriginal but for me it really think it is the coolest ocean liner because of the classy and timeless interior it has (along with the Olympic class ships in general). I loved how each room in first class had a theme to it like it didn’t just reflect the British but other countries as well (Turkish baths, palace of Versailles theme in first class lounge etc). I think the only thing I would have changed on the titanic was the pool. If they had done a Roman pool house aesthetic similar to the Normandie that would have been awesome. Awesome video. Great choices and you provide wonderful rationale for your picks! I'm glad you have some intermediates and older liners - I personally am a huge fan of the non-express steamers. The post-war Saxonia class are a favorite, along with the Britannic and Georgic, "The Pretty Sisters," and Cunard's "A" class. I am a Titanic buff too, she is what started my whole ocean liner interest in 1983! And the Normandie - what a liner. Thanks for sharing your choices!

I’m trying to figure out how I ended up watching your videos. But I’m loving them. I’ve learned more about ocean liners and cruise ships watching your videos than I ever did in school. I don’t know why, I find myself obsessed with White Star Line and Cunards liners. The style of the ships in the early 1900s into the 40s are my absolute favorite. I think modern day cruise ships are complete eye sores. These old liners, are just so beautiful. What ships should look like to me at least. I very much appreciate your videos. Not to mention for the first time in my life, I’ve looked up prices for tickets on Queen Mary 2 from New York to London. Surprisingly enough, I may actually do it some day. 😂

Maybe I'm influenced by her story, but I was happy you got the balls to take a predictable choice like Titanic. Her looks were absolutely beautiful and they would've been even if she hadn't sunk. I watched this four months ago on the roku KZbin which can’t comment on. Great video as always but technically there were 3 liners built in between QE2 and QM2. The Vistafjord was built for the transatlantic trade but never really did. Both Astor’s were built for the South Africa run. Also people forget that Cunard had two liners on the transatlantic trade in the 80s and early 90s. The Sagafjord filled in for the QE2 on occasion. Which would have been a treat since the NAL sisters brought luxury and style back to Cunard!

I wonder why the gantry styled davits of the "BRITANIC" (Olympic Class) was not continued on other ships. They reportedly functioned superbly during her evacuation, provided greater flexibility during severe lists for launching boats, permitted boats to be stacked and even boarded while still on deck then swung outward, were equipped with flood lights, and etc. Such a design, though unappealing to the ship's lines, seemed very efficient.
@imagaybanana20044 жыл бұрын
If we’re talking purely about exterior aesthetics, then my favorite is probably the Olympic. Particularly in her 1911 layout. I just find that her fully open A deck, and her longer B deck promenade, give her a more symmetrical and more open feel if that makes sense. And I also just find her career so fascinating. She was the true bad ass of World War I.

The Andrea Doria was so innovative and striking when it came out in 1953. While docked in New York all the top interior designers and furniture buyers for the best stores came to visit. The murals in 4 of the public rooms (first and cabin class ballrooms and lounges) were gorgeous but so were other aspects of the decor: the rose pink chairs in the main dining room, the ceramic desk supports in the cabin class library, the crown shaped wall lights in the tourist dining room, the luxury suite that had a dressing room with quilted satin walls and a confetti-like carpet. So cool and so top of the line mid century. (The best mid century design was from Italy and Denmark)

Harland and Wolf long considered the Olympic class liners as among their finest work. She and her sisters were indeed beautiful ships. As John Maxtone Graham said (when referring to Olympic), "she was in one breathtaking ship the last of the lean yacht like racers and the first of the floating palaces." They neatly avoided the grotesque Brunhilda like ponderousness of the Imperator and her sisters and managed to avoid some of the cluttered upper deck issues of Mauretania and Aquitania.

Here are some things you mentioned I want to address and a following list of the ocean liners I consider the greatest. 3:36 QE2’s interior was made for the late 60s and 1970s modernistic style. Even though it broke from tradition in many ways, the design worked at first. Over the years they tried to update it with new more classical-looking furniture and fittings. But the thing is, the futuristic 60s design was infused into the very design/layout of the ships interior, and it did not blend well at all with the updated furniture and fittings they put in it. 4:22 Aquitanias exterior _was_ beautiful. I don’t understand why people think otherwise. Is it the boxy forward superstructure? If so, why? That was the trend at the time. It had been the trend for a number of years and it can be seen in the beloved Olympic class, the Imperator class and more. The only ships at the time that really broke from this trend were the Lusitania/Mauretania. 5:00 I mean no offense, but why is it always an offense in need of apology for one to say they think a certain ocean liners interior and exterior to be better than the Olympic class? The Olympic class was no where near the be-all-end-all of shipbuilding and was not an all too extraordinary milestone in ocean liner history, besides the Titanic disaster. It is as if people are so hung up on the romanticism surrounding the Titanic (and in turn its sister ships) that they fail to see the beauty and technological achievements of other ocean liners in an objective light. I agree that Lusitania _and_ it’s sister Mauretania to be the first true superliners. They were the most impressive liners of the Edwardian era, a huge leap in liner history and an achievement for Britain and Cunard. 5:57 I don’t understand how Lusitania’s interiors were more unique than the Mauretania’s? They were unique amongst themselves. Both offered distinct styles that made them benefit one another. I personally prefer Mauretania because I feel that many of her rooms had more detail and richness than did her sister. I also prefer her exterior over Lusitania. I think that her forward superstructure had a more appealing shape, I like her white skylights and vents over the brown ones of Lusitania, the overhang of her A deck promenade and boat deck, and more. Now here is my list of what I believe to be the greatest ocean liners of all time, in order: 1. *SS United States* 2. *Normandie* 3. *SS Great Britain* 4. *SS Great Eastern* 5. *Lusitania/Mauretania* 6. *Oceanic class 1870* 7. *Queen Mary* 8. *Queen Elizabeth* 9. *Kaiser class* 10. *Bremen/Europa* My personal favorite liners, not necessarily the best: - SS United States - Lusitania/Mauretania - Aquitania - SS Great Eastern - Queen Elizabeth - Queen Mary - And not necessarily the ship, but the _story_ of Titanic.
@TheGreatBigMove4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed, thoughtful response. I'll respond to a couple of these: - I do like Aquitania's exterior, but I wouldn't describe it as beautiful. It may have been the trend at the time (although I would argue that forward superstructure was never intended to look the way it ended up), but that doesn't really make it any more or less beautiful. - The reason I 'apologized' for liking Aquitania's interior is because Aquitania was the primary contemporary and rival of Olympic, so it makes sense to compare the two. - When I said Lusitania's interiors were more unique, I meant that I think they were more unique among Cunard ships at the time. But this stance isn't a hill I'm going to die on.

My favourite is really between Titanic and Olympic. But given their very different careers, I gave them their own titles which reflects how I feel about them. I also like the Queen Mary and the majority of what they planned for Britannic if she had entered service as an ocean liner. The Aquitania and Mauretania are on there because they were great ships too. So my list is as follows: 1. RMS Titanic (my special ship) 2. RMS Olympic (my favourite ship) 3. RMS Queen Mary/RMS Britannic 4. RMS Aquitania 5. RMS Mauretania I couldn't decide which out of the Queen Mary and Britannic should occupy third place, so I decided to put them as joint third. And as you can see, given the Titanic is so well known for his tragic maiden voyage, it has the slightly superior position of special ship, over the Olympic. But the Olympic is still very much my favourite.

I think my #1 at this point is Olympic. I was always a huge Titanic fan as a kid, and I actually agree with you about the aesthetic improvements over Olympic. But I love the story and career of the Old Reliable. I love that she sent more vessels to the bottom than most warships. I love that she sailed in wartime without escort because the escorts were too slow. I love that she got to serve the role that she was actually built for over a prolonged period. And I love that after the tragic fates of her sisters, Olympic proved the merit of her class enough to be named, Old Reliable.
