I wish we had more film footage of Bob Fitzsimmons, he's been my favourite boxer since I first read about him as a 10yr old. First 3 division world champion against much bigger men most of the time, truly astonishing! 🇬🇧🥊👍

A 61 round fight. Goddamn. Spending that much time resolving the conflict of a ring certainly left an impression on Peter Jackson, seeing as he went on to direct a 12 hour adaptation of Tolkien's trilogy.

I live near where Bob was born. He's still a sporting legend here in England, and hugely admired for what he achieved. It's just a shame his life after boxing was so tragic. But that's a common story for so many from any era. Great to see you covering the pre TV era's Rummy. Keep up the great work.

There was a point in Fitzsimmons' career where he was so desperate for activity that he used to offer opponents $50 (a huge amount back then) if they could last the distance with him. Fitzsimmons was the first 3 division champion - middleweight, heavyweight, & light heavyweight, in that order. Going by the historical accounts about him, he was a heavy handed puncher with devastating body attack, & he won the heavyweight crown off Gentleman Jim Corbett with a body shot.

Hi Rummy, a bit off-topic, but here I go. I would love for you to do more preview & predictions especially, but also post-fight review if appropriate, on the top 10 fights within the heavyweight divison. Examples such like Joyce vs Parker and Ruiz vs Ortiz were a couple of fights I would've liked to hear your opinion on, as in my view there wasn't really an obvious result and I thought those fights had an intriguing clash of styles. In addition, would also be interesting to see how you see the heavyweight landscape is after a couple of top 10 fights, if making two post-fight reviews is a bit much. but of course, quality over quantity, what do you think? With kind regards Rune from Norway. PS: Love your videoes and keep it up! I have learnt so much about boxing and you have been much of the reason I am as interested as I am today, as I started following around the fall of 2020. Edit: spelling

@@davepoke that I understood. I once heard Bert Sugar talking about him a few years ago, before he passed away. If I don't review these data, my memory plays tricks on me. I knew that he had been the last champion of bare-knuckle boxing, and also the first champion with gloves. I'm still wrong but I have in mind that he was reigning for nearly a decade, and also that he was one of the first athletes to win 1 million dollars. Bert Sugar was a boxing encyclopedia of all times. And rummy is on its way to becoming that, if it isn't already.

I think when exactly somebody was introduced into Hall of Fame is a good indication how great he was. Taking into consideration both International Boxing Hall of Fame and old Ring Boxing Hall of Fame the list would be like this: 1-2. Bob Fitzsimmons & James Corbett (1990/1954), 3. George Dixon (1990/1956), 4. Peter Jackson (1990/1957), 5. Young Griffo (1991/1954), 6. Kid McCoy (1991/1957), 7. Tommy Ryan (1991/1958), Jack McAuliffe (1995/1954), 9. George Kid Lavigne (1998/1959), 10. Joe Choynski (1998/1960). I would definitely pick Griffo and Choynski over Smith (2009/-) and Erne (2020/-) which are on your list. Griffo had 118 wins (as per boxrec) and Choynski 59 (Smith and Erne only 37 and 31 respectively).

@davidmccann9811
@davidmccann9811 Жыл бұрын
Fights were often left to newspaper decisions with no judges or decision at ringside, and in addition fights would often be called a "draw" if nobody was stopped. So we could fight and agree on a draw if we both survived. You could then totally outclass me and knock me down in every round, but if I survived it would be officially marked as a draw. This is largely because boxing was illegal in most US States, but you were allowed to have "an athletic contest". But this meant it had to be called a draw, regardless of what actually happened in the ring. If a decision was given, it was considered a "fight" and all participants could be arrested and locked up (including the ref and cornermen). This is also why places like Reno and Carson City were popular for title fights, because they were in the middle of the desert and the only law was the local sheriff; who could usually be paid off to look the other way and enjoy the fight along with everyone else.

Another factor is: bareknuckle, gloves of the day of corbett and dempsey or with modern gloves because these influence of how people would fight its not the same things and for example the way they fought in those day was influenced by the gloves and ruleset of more grappling and wrestling
