It's too hard for me to rank my top 2 for this decade. On the one hand, Ali's two greatest opponents had significant injuries that held them back both in training and in their first fights with him. Patterson had an injured sacro-liliac joint, and Liston had an injured left shoulder. These were very significant because Patterson relied so much on speed and mobility, and Liston relied so much on his left jab. Plus, Liston was forced to throw the 2nd fight. So we never saw Ali tested against these two anywhere near their peak condition. But on the other hand, none of those problems were Ali's fault. AND Ali had the last third of that decade taken from him! Can you imagine how great the 60s could have been for boxing if not for the corrupt streets that controlled Liston and the corrupt government that robbed Ali?!? How amazing it would have been to see prime Ali vs peak Liston!!! I don't think either one would knock each other out, but I think Liston would knock Ali down by the mid-to-late rounds and win by points. But either way the fight would have gone down in history! Ali would then probably reinvent his whole approach and style and become better than ever.

Did you forget about Cleveland Williams who beat Ernest Terrell by Technical Stoppage in the 7th round, during their scheduled bout in 1962. On what grounds did boxing fraternity or commission schedule a rematch, which was held in 1963. In addition this was to be held in Chicago where Terrell lives. Williams was scheduled to fight for the vacant WBA Heavyweight title in 1964 against Terrell. Instead he finds himself fighting to remain alive after being shot by .357 magnum at point blank range. Two years removed after losing 3/4 small intestines, kidney & considerable weight loss he enters the ring on Nov. 14 1966 at Houston Astrodome to square off for WBC version of Heavyweight Title against Muhammad Ali. This was a stoppage at 3rd round after Williams was knocked down 4 times and got up every time. In addition Williams winnings for that prize fight was garnished by Bud Adams. Cleveland Williams fought Sonny Liston to two slugfest in 1959 & 1960. He hit Liston with bombs that should have sent all men bar Liston to the canvass. Then Ali manages to beat an out of shape Liston, they call it the upset of the century. Yes if Ali had lost to the version of Williams of 1966, their would be no Greatest of All Time status and Liston affair would’ve been exposed. Williams was expected to lose.

There probably would have been an Ali/Frazier fight in the 60’s which would have been great. Ali couldn’t move like he did in the 60’s when he fought Frazier which would have made it interesting. Ali might have never taken that first loss,
@rightmunted75382 жыл бұрын
@@alfarparan He absolutely wouldn't have lost, Ali found his most success in the Frazier fights when he imitated his 60's boxing style but couldn't do it for that long. Sure he wouldn't knock Frazier out and Frazier would probably give him a beating in the later rounds but Ali would win a comfortable victory.

I think you could say that about a lot of the opposition Ali face in the mid to late 70s, he carried an Injury into those fights, a brain injury, And he still beat them in some cases!
@krl97a Жыл бұрын
Ali robbed himself by dodging the draft. Agree or disagree with the policy, but labeling it "corrupt" when most people would get punished in that situation misses the mark. Nor was Ali some pacifist idealist back then as revisionist media portrays him. He gave an interview saying he'd support war if it was holy jihad. He just opposed fighting for an infidel nation. He moved in Nation of Islam circles back then, opposing racial integration and sounding a lot like Al Qaeda in his rhetoric. He had a change of heart later and became a better man, but in his radical days he was far from a role model worth emulating.

that graphic at the end shows you how much the game has changed. how much more parody there was and how many more losses and comebacks are a part of the careers of your top fighters. yeah, frazier and ali went undefeated but they surely would have met in the 60's and one of htem would have taken a loss were it not for the vietnam war. go 3 and 4 in title fights and you're top 3 in the decade. quite different from today's era of record padding that goes on well into a fighter's prime.
@DailyCorvid2 жыл бұрын
Todays lot are absolute pussies. The undefeated records going on for decades, that proves to me that a lot of the fights are ear-fluff. But yeah back in the day man, you had legends knocking out legends all the time, NOBODY ended up with 0 losses and if you did people knew it was fake. Now boxing fans of a young age, they're just not that bright :D They buy anything sold to them with flashy cutscenes. Lennox Lewis is the guy from here who deserved to go unbeaten and even he was KO'd one time! He avenged it but still, shows you that even Tyson Fury must be padding. Cuz Lewis was better imo than Tyson, even though I am a Fury fan. Lennox was the real King Of The Ring.

Saved again by Rummy's video; been down with a stinking cold for two weeks and three days now, I was running out of things to watch from my sick bed. Thanks Rummy. Edit and totally off topic: I'd be interested to hear if loads of people have been ill across the pond, in the UK we are dropping like flies. One theory is; lockdown lowered the collective immunity to viruses.

Patterson over Fraser?
@shadowsnake89892 жыл бұрын
If I'm being honest, I think Frazier and his team were smart for not entering that tournament. They had a route for a portion of the heavyweight title through Mathis and whoever won out of the eight would have to come to him anyway. He'd beat Quarry, Bonavena and Ellis in the end who were arguably the best of that crop.

The most impressive thing about Liston was his "march to the title". He beat eight of the top 10 contenders within a three year span. The only reason he didn't beat all ten was that Henry Cooper and Ingemar Johansson absolutely refused to fight Liston (out of self-preservation). Liston only got his title fight because JFK worked behind the scenes to make it happen. Cus D'Amato knew full well the trouble Liston would give Patterson (much the same the same trouble he would have given Mike Tyson if they had fought.)

This is my opinion, boxing can't advance when all these channels are only talking about old fighters like Ali/Frazier/Tyson, there are a lot of great boxers that no one knows about and are active now, i feel like ive watched a video similar to this like a hundred times. The stigma that boxing is dead is because of this.

Great job Rummy! I am glad you put Liston #2! I know many would have Frazier higher. Reality is Liston is vastly under rated. I am not even sure what that was in Liston/Ali #2? Ali considers Liston his biggest win. It is too bad Liston was involved with the mob and likely took a dive in the second Ali fight. Liston just destroyed Patterson in both fights. Liston is one fighter that would transition the smaller heavyweight era fighter too much later. He was not small by any era. Liston 2-0 in title fights both 1st round knockouts until Ali. 2nd Ali fight had even Ali over top of him saying get up as he knew he took a dive. The ever interesting boxing and especially then very political. Younger people would not know it today but heavyweight champion was "the" athlete.

Great work Rummy! I'm surprised you chose Patterson over Frazier. But the reasoning makes sense. Just one thing. The Ellis - Patterson decision was not "a bit controversial" but one of the biggest and most obvious frauds of all time. I think you were trying to be a bit diplomatic here^^

I was surprised Tyson wasn’t named until I saw it was about the 60’ties. But a hard decade for sure! They would have been light heavyweight today!. Ali was arguably the best. It it shouldn’t be necessary saying it it’s a personal opinion! But somehow it is 🎸😊

Cosell said in '67 there was no one left for Ali to fight, I guess he forgot about Frazier, Quarry, Bonavena, etc. Seriously Ali probably would've stayed champ much longer if he hadnt of been kicked out of boxing a few years, probably even would've won a fight with Frazier in most likely '68 or '69

The politics behind Clay/Ali were overwhelming. No chance that he beat Liston, NO CHANCE. Clay/Ali was the golden boy, just like Leonard (ie: vs Hagler). These fighters are talented, no doubt, but they are selected because they are able to provide an appearance, persona, and in the end put meat in the seats in order to generate the money. Why do you think managers like D'Amato slept in the same room with Patterson, too many worries and influences. I've always said Frazier was one of the best boxers of that era. When fighters like Foreman say they were scared of Frazier, that means something. The beating Frazier got from Foreman was unreal, it is unheard of / forbidden in today's boxing. The Rocky films = Frazier, the true underdog. Ali, great? Absolutely, but never the underdog and was politically pushed to the top. The 60s to 70s was one of the best eras, with fighters like Lyle, Shavers and Foreman all joining in. There has never been and probably will never be a time with so many really competitive athletes going at it like they did. I will end on this, *Jimmy Young* was one of the smartest boxing tacticians back in the early 70s. It was politics why he never became champ. His fight with Foreman speaks volumes, it put Foreman (near death) into retirement! And Young's fight against Ali, should have been a win (or a re-match). But.... they never wanna risk the golden boy investment.

Ali was a great boxer, but pound 4 pound he's not the "greatest" of all time. Most people say he was the greatest because HE so often labeled himself the greatest. Plus Ali was a major part of The 1960's counterculture... which was bigger than boxing, that made Ali a heroic figure among the people, not just sports fans. So it's easy to label Ali the "Greatest", even though there are other boxers who were clearly better than him strictly from a boxing standpoint.
@rawheadrex19722 жыл бұрын
@@danieldelavera9212I think the OP clearly stated “amongst the heavyweights “. In my opinion Ali is #1-2, interchangeable with Joe Louis. Pound for pound I can think of six or seven fighters better than Ali, starting with Robinson, Langford, Greb, Duran, and a few others.
