I am curious why the Pentax MX is not on there. But I think you pretty much explained it towards the end. I’m not a die hard Pentax fan by any means. But comparing the MX to the Olympus OM-1 and the Nikon FM, it does pretty well. It is one of the most overlooked cameras, which makes no sense to me. It is definitely superior to the K-1000.
@lexlayabout57573 жыл бұрын
The MX and K1000 are not in the same league at all. The K1000 was a rock-bottom budget SLR while the MX was aimed at professionals who did not want an auto mode. There was an extensive MX system with motor drive, bulk film holders etc. The MX blew the socks off the OM-1 - it ought to have done because Pentax designed the MX to be an OM-1 beater.

definitely I was thinking the same thing and actually commented above as well. I don't understand why the MX gets such little recognition while being such a workhorse of a camera.

@@lexlayabout5757 Pentax made the LX for that purpose as well - to beat the Olympus OM models. History tells us that they didn't succeed. The K1000 may have been a rock bottom budget 35mm SLR but it is the flag bearer for Pentax amongst 35mm cameras. This not slagging Pentax - they were one of the heavyweights of the Medium format Professional sector during that period (actually, SUPERB) but the 35mm market had become difficult during the late 70s and early 80s. Olympus continued their small form factor philosophy in the OM line (on from the tiny 60s Pen models). They introduced "off the film plane" metering... other manufacturers had to play catch up. Contax released the 139Q and Pentax followed with the LX. All made fantastic imagery but copies rarely usurp an innovative original . I have the Olympus and Contax models and have always desired an LX to complete the comparison. Reliability reports turned me away but it may be time now. Some of my best images were made with these cameras back in the film days - simply because of the form factor. The photography world owes Olympus a lot of respect and gratitude for dragging the industry there.

A short while ago I bought myself a Pentax Z-1 auto focus camera, because the reviews I'd seen praised it very highly and equally because it sells for absolute bargain prices for what is essentially a pro-spec auto focus 35mm film camera. I have to say I've not been disappointed and the results, with my large collection of m/f and a/f lens collected for my K1,K-3 , and K-5 DSLRs, have been absolutely brilliant.

0:38 - did that really come in bare brass, or is this an extreme example of brassing? I remember back then "chrome" bodies were the cheapest, "black" cost extra. That started to change the next decade or so - my first K-mount body (Ricoh XR2s) ONLY came in black, mainly because the top plate and pentaprism cover (and possibly other parts) were black polycarbonate instead of the usual brass. Back then a lot of people were concerned "plastic bodies" weren't going to be sturdy enough, but the practice seems to have withstood the test of time - now MOST (d)SLR bodies are "plastic". Don't remember seeing many K bodies other than the K1000 - it's essentially a KX or K2 without a couple of gizmos (I think the f-stop display in the viewfinder and the stop-down button). 0:51 - that's actually a Spotmatic II. I remember the ads in Time, Life and Newsweek in the early 1970s. Never did buy a Pentax new (until the digitals came along), the only Pentax film body I actually bought was an ME around 1998 or so, it was on the shelf of a local camera store for $60. I always bought Ricoh bodies, though they were larger and heavier. Just better features for less money, and great quality as well. The best deals on eBay are the Sears-branded Ricohs (I have three of those). Wasn't there also a 645? Took 120 film, 16 frames per roll. Vertical frame orientation IIRC - the film travelled horizontally. This was necessary because you couldn't have vertical film travel, the upper roll would get in the way of the pentaprism.
@lexlayabout57572 жыл бұрын
The K1000 (and KM) looked superficially similar to the KX and K2, but belonged to the previous generation of cameras; it was simply a Spotmatic (originating in the 1960s) with the screw mount replaced by a K bayonet mount. The light meter was a slow CdS type when other cameras had moved on to silicon types, and the viewfinder gave no clue what shutter speed you were at.
@lexlayabout57572 жыл бұрын
Postcript to my other comment, (d)SLR bodies have (mostly?) got over their plastic period. Now the budget crowd have moved to phone cameras, the remaining pro and serious amateur market expects better, and therefore magnesium or titanium bodies (eg Pentax K-1 and K-3). Prices are much higher than 10-20 year ago accordingly. I think only Canon still sells budget DSLRs.
@iskandartaib2 жыл бұрын
@@lexlayabout5757 Very interesting. I went looking for more info - it turns out that Pentax started using vertical-travel metal shutters (made by Copal, I think) with the K2. The KX, KM and K1000 used the old cloth horizontal-travel shutters. You can tell by the X flash synch speed - it's 1/125 sec for the K2, 1/60 for the other. I thought all the M series cameras used metal shutters - I was wrong. The MX didn't.
@lexlayabout57572 жыл бұрын
@@iskandartaib That's right. The MX still had a cloth shutter because it was partly aimed at professionals, and some pros still distrusted metal shutters, vertical run ones in particular. In the 1970s some were also still anti- any form of automation (my father was one such), hence the MX was manual only. But by 1980 pros and advanced amateurs wanted auto _and_ manual exposure modes in the same camera, by default, hence the Pentax LX and Nikon F3. These both had metal shutters, but horizontal. Only later did the pros start wanting higher flash sync speeds, which meant a general shift to fan-type vertical run shutters.

@@iskandartaib The Shutters and the Shutter Timing in the Pentax K2 was made by Seiko... "The Watch People". Same with the ME Super. All of those other Cameras like KX and MX are basically a K1000 in a different body with a few extra features, but nothing to write home about. Horizontal Traveling Cloth Shutters are Slow, and Unreliable when it comes to Shutter Speed, they also wear out quicker. It's why they made the K1000 for 21 years... Cheapest Camera out there. But, if you have a early model from the 70's, and the shutter still works, you can expect it to go out at any time now. Cloth Shutters are also prone to Mold and Mildew if not stored properly. I have seen a few that were Eaten Away by tiny Lice Like insects. The Canon AE1 line is like a K1000 in that respect, aside from it's "Automatic" features. Canon made Millions off the Cheapest Camera they could possibly make, all because People are Foolish enough to believe the Advertising. The Pentax K2 and the Pentax ME Super can do something I am sure you may not be aware of... The Most Accurate Shutter Speeds of any 35mm camera ever produced. The Seiko Timing when in Automatic Mode, will choose the "Correct" Shutter Speed for the Scene in any instance. You may Click the Shutter when the Camera says "1/250th" of a second, but at the millisecond after the Shutter is pressed, the Seiko Timing will select the most Accurate Speed, which could be something like "1/264th" of a second or "1/233rd" of a second. There is a Lot of "time" between 1/250th and 1/500th and 1/1000th and 1/2000th of a Second, and the Pentax K2 and ME Super with Seiko Timing will take Full Advantage of that, and so instead of having an MX that is set to 1/500th and you will always get something close to 1/500th of a Sec. the K2 and ME Super will select something like 1/756th or 1/442nd of a Sec.when the meter showed 1/500th sec. So not just a Faster Speed of 1/2000th in the ME Super, but Much More Accurate Shutter Speeds than any other camera out there. BTW - the "Sears KS-2" is the same as the K2 with the addition of an Electronic Self Timer, and an Available Power Winder for 2.5 frames per second. With the K2 a Power Winder is not available... you have to buy the K2 DMD to use a Power Winder or Motor Drive. Both the "Sears KS-2 and KSX Super" have the Seiko Shutter of the K2 and ME Super, so it also does the Accurate Fraction in "Auto" mode. Like the Pentax K2, the entire "Sears" KS line has Shutter Speeds for Manual down to a full 16 seconds, and when in "Auto Mode" the Seiko Timing can select a shutter speed as long as 3 minutes automatically. You will think your Camera Died, until the shutter closes. lol (Fantastic Night Scenes) The "Sears Power Winder KS" for their "KS" series will also work on the "KSX" and it is one of the Most Well Designed and Solid Made "winders" I have ever seen. It even has a Metal "Pull Out Foot" at the bottom front center edge, that will allow you to set the camera down on a Table, with a Long Zoom Mounted, and the Camera sits Vertical without tipping over. The Drive Coupling on the drive, and in the Camera as well as the Film Advance Drive Post that couples to it are Thicker and Stronger than any Pentax. Also... Only the Later Models of "Sears" cameras were made by Ricoh and Chinon. like the "Sears KSX-P Dual Program" same as Chinon CX-5 etc. Good luck finding either of those cameras alive and well today. They ran on 3 AAA Batteries, which most people forgot when they stored the camera. The Batteries Rotted and Corroded in the Battery Chamber, eating away any Metal spring or connector plate, and I have even seen them where the Corrosion Seeped Out and like a Virus, and started attacking the outer metal surfaces of the Body... Green and Ugly Mess. ... Get it out of here! (yeah, I used to Repair Cameras for a living, before I opened a Pro Photo Studio for Advertising... way back when.)

Every time someone makes a "Top 10 "List" of any cameras, there is always someone like You who is whining, "WAH ... Why didn't MY Camera make the List?" For Obvious Reasons the MX didn't make the List. The MX is Not one of the "Best Cameras" it is a Scaled Down Version of the K1000. You think it is Better than the ME Super, when it is NOT in so many ways. First Off, why would you Limit Yourself to an "All Manual" Camera, when you could have the Best of Both Worlds with the ME Super? How do you like the Thousands of Shots you Missed over the Years, that you would Not have missed if you only had an ME Super. Try shooting photos of your Kids while they run around playing in the backyard without "Automatic" and you have to Constantly change Shutter Speeds with a "Dial" on the Top of the Camera... and all you see in the Viewfinder is a little circle that resembles that "Dial" and it goes Round and Round with a few LED lights to Guide you in one direction or another until you see a "Green Light" and take the shot... but you have to turn that Awkward Dial, and it's a Pain... Especially Outdoors in the Cold... Impossible with Gloves on. Most times by the time you select the right speed, you Missed the Shot! With the ME Super your Camera Never leaves your Eye, and you select Manual Speeds with 2 electronic buttons on the top of the camera, while you watch the left side and a Full Range of Shutter Speeds with different color LEDs to show "your setting" or what the Camera chose Automatically. With the Most Accurate Metal Shutter and "Seiko Timing" that is Only Available on the K2 and ME Super, and the later models ME Program etc.. Try shooting Rock Stars from the edge of the Stage with your MX and an "All Access Pass"... and then Cry all the way home at all the Shots you "Almost" got. The ME Super was Made for "Rock Photography" ... Everything illuminated in the Viewfinder, and the Camera never leaves your Eye. Even Loading Film or changing lenses in the Dark is a Breeze... and sometimes you NEED that 1/2000th of a Second with an f-1.4 50mm and Stage Lights. I made a Good Living shooting "Live Action Rock Stars" in the 80's with "All Access Passes" to the Best Concerts that were ever performed by Any Famous Band you can think of, and doing so, I got to meet and party with a lot of Very Famous People... it would NOT have been Possible with an MX. Here is a Direct Comparison... You have a Horizontal Traveling "Cloth Shutter", same as the K1000, and Known to be Inaccurate and the Worst in Cold Weather. The ME Super has a Metal Vertical Shutter an the Worlds Most Accurate Timing by Seiko.... also Much Better in Cold Weather. You have a Flash Sync of 1/60th ME Super 1/125th and that speed is Mechanical so it works without a Battery. Your ASA Range is 25-1600 - ME Super 12-1600. You have All Mechanical and Inaccurate Shutter Speeds from 1sec to 1/1000th of a sec. and No Exposure Compensation. ME Super has speeds from 4sec. to 1/2000th sec. and -/+ 2 EV of compensation, and the Most Accurate Shutter made at the time. You have a "shutter Speed Dial" like the K1000, and the ME Super was the First on the Planet to have Electronically Controlled Buttons for Manual Speeds. Accurate Manual Speeds, and the Most Accurate "Auto" speeds ever made... See my Reply to @iskandartaib for a Detailed explanation. You have a "Motor Drive" as well as a "Winder" available, but they were Bulky, kinda Ugly, and Heavy. The ME Winder II is Lighter Sleeker and looks Great. Not sure why you would need a "Motor Drive" when all you can shoot are Landscapes or Portraits, if you can get a Model to Stand Still long enough. Aside from all those ways the ME Super is a Much Better Camera, your MX has one of the Worst Meters ever made, and is not only Very Inaccurate, it has a inherent problem all MX have... The Meter will "Turn On" by itself... even when in a Camera Bag, and Drain your Batteries. Then those Dead Batteries Corrode over months, and your camera is F-ed... Expensive Repair. That Meter also will "Turn Off" when it seems to be Needed most. Especially in Cold Weather... so you not only have a Shutter that is Inaccurate and even Worse in Cold Weather, but also a Meter that is Inaccurate and Undependable, and even Worse in Cold Weather. Please Tell Me Again, how the MX is a "Better Camera" than the ME Super... The ME Super "Belongs" on this "Top Ten List" the MX does not. The LX was a Nice "Professional" camera, but for the Price Point, you could buy a Nikon F3 HP and it's Incredible Motor Drive... (Best Drive Ever) I still have a Nikon F3 "Titanium" in Champaign Gold, with that Motor Drive and a Nikkor 50mm f-1.2 Lens. The Camera, Drive and Lens are Pristine. I wouldn't trade it for a "Gold Plated LX" ...

I don't understand the ranking of the K2 versus the K1000. The KX as a manual and the K2 as a semiautomatic camera were both totally superior to the K1000. Even the KM, which was the first lower price camera in the K-series, will clearly beat the K1000 in terms of usability. The K1000 was designed as a real low-price consumer camera. Maybe this explains the popularity, because a lot of students bought these for their photography courses. But also, it's really a joke having the ME super on place two and the K2 on 10. Anybody who had put their hand on both of the cameras will instantly learn that the K2 is a really professional instrument with excellent handling and the ME super is a poor extension to add some wonky "manual mode" to the consumer-oriented, auto-only ME. Compare the finder image, manual time settings, the ability to lock the mirror on the K2 etc. and you know what I'm talking about. BTW my first SLR was a KX which I bought second-hand in 1980, followed a few years later by a K2. I can't tell today with which one I took more photos, several thousands with both of them.
@lexlayabout57573 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. It's based on Google searches - but maybe because of a problem? I expect the 6x7 is searched because people find it hard to load 120 film, and why twice? The 67II was only the 6x7 with a make-over, and BTW that one's got an old non-metering prism. Then says K2, but shows a KX! - not much like each other except the chassis. Ridiculous not to include the LX, Pentax's greatest 35mm camera, made for 21 years, up there with the Nikon F3 and Canon F1. And the modern K-1 should be in a meaningful Pentax top 10.

Which, of course be set completely manually or with a set aperture or shutter speed. It opened up a whole new world, because as long as you had the focus right, it could do the rest!!

Not to diminish the importance and elegance of the ES, but the Konica Auto Reflex is generally considered the first SLR with auto-exposure. Their shutter-priority system wasn't TTL, but it predates the ES by almost 6 years! The first camera to combine auto-exposure with TTL metering was then the Konica Autoreflex T in 1968, another 3 years before the release of the ES. What the Spotmatic DOES bring to the table is APERTURE priority auto exposure. It's considered the first camera to have this type of AE, since it requires an electronic shutter that's continuously variable. Definitely worthy of praise, and a great camera historically! Of all the Spotmatics, I'd recommend them first to people looking for a classic Pentax camera. Thanks for watching! - Connor

@@Kamerastore Thank you for someone FINALLY stating the truth about Konica here. Everywhere you look, proponents of one current camera brand or another try to take the "firsts" away from Konica's history, of which there are MANY. Konica deserves so much more modern respect and attention - thank you!

Missed the MX & LX? LOL

per the description, the video is based on Google search analytics, not our personal opinions! So the MX and LX receive less attention online than the cameras mentioned in this video. Get your friends to search them more, and they'll show up next year! Might be a bit more expensive then, though (-;
