I’m not a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. I know, shocker. I think that if you’re in a relationship, you should be showing your partner that you appreciate them on a regular basis. With that said, when I realized it was time for me to make a Valentine’s Day video, I thought, “What better way to commemorate the holiday than by doing the one thing that most people do on this very special day? Complain about romance!” So I’m listing my ten biggest pet peeves in fictional romances! I’m talking about everything wrong with insta romances, why you should avoid unrealistic sex scenes, everything wrong with love triangles, and more. If you have been wondering about the worst kinds of fictional romances, want to complain together about the worst tropes in romance novels, or ya just want to gripe about bad romance tropes overall, stick around! I’m hitting ya with a doozy at the end… 😳

John Adams This is why I like to watch animes placed outside Japan. Like Europe mostly. Such as Berserk, Nadia: the Secret of the Blue Water are a few I can remember right now. Most Japanese animation is crap because of self fulfillment stories and god, harem stories sucks so much, with some exceptions. Re:Monster does a good job at having a harem. Pretty much the guy sleeps with all the girls, at the same time. Like almost every night, unlike most harems where the main guy can't decide who to go for but at the same time says nothing and is always chased by the girls. Can't believe girls would fall for a guy who shows no sign of committing to anyone.

+Weirdanimalboy I'm having flashbacks to a Zelda fanfiction called "My Inner Life" where the writer kept using cat comparisons during sex scenes. Stuff like "tiger-like agility" or the word "catlike" and, at one point, the phrase "soft mewing noises". One of the commentors suggested listening to the Meow Mix song or the Nyan cat theme during the sex scens to alleviate the pain of listening to the dramatic reader read those awful things.

Why is there so little romance written about already married couples? Not as a primary plotline maybe but i think it could be a great sub plot.
@calicoc1335
@calicoc1335 6 жыл бұрын
As you probably noticed, most romantic plots involve meeting, deciding they like each other (over a relatively long time, decide they are in love with one another, and then they kiss/go steady/etc, the end. It might be because writers have a particular attachment to the phase, or maybe it is because it is what they have the most experience in. I watched Crazy Rich Asians a month ago, and I was ecstatic to find out it was about a couple with an already established relationship, for the sole reason that that is so rare. The most likely reason, now that I think about it, is because many people feel like that once a couple is married, there is no more romance between them. Think of married parents in any show ever, it mostly just shows them bickering and unhappy with their life in general.
@DarkPrject
@DarkPrject 6 жыл бұрын
It's way easier to write a fresh relationship. For a story you need conflict and "will they won't they" works perfectly for that plus you automatically get your readers invested in the relationship because that's the whole point. If you wanna write a romance about a married couple, you're either gonna need a relationship crisis, which is depressing and not likely to get your readers on board with the characters belonging together in the first place, or you need some sort of outside conflict that they can tackle as a couple. Since romance is often thought of exclusively as it's own genre people who wanna write about external conflicts are often just gonna write about one protagonist instead of the married protagonist couple and probably shoehorn in some "romance" barely-even-a-subplot with a love interest that has zero chemistry with the protagonist because they think it's basically mandatory. And of course they are stories that have the protagonist married, but the partner get's damseled, or fridged and that's the inciting incident, so we don't see much, if any relationship actually portrayed.

My MC and love interest are in an arranged marriage, MC hates the prospect of getting married, but he has no choice, but when he meets love interest, turns out he is a nice guy and equally stuck in the relationship, they develop a friendship, and then slowly fall in love.
@lunamugetsu6274
@lunamugetsu6274 5 жыл бұрын
Peter Martin I think it’s because most people see marriage as the endgame for romance and that once a couple is married or are married, nothing happens after that. That’s probably why most shows or movies that have a romance subplot going on between a couple would usually try to drag out the romance of just end it at the couple got together. Most likely because writers don’t really know how to portray the couple now that they’re together.

Check out 'Outlander'. The female MC is married to a man in the present day and then she gets thrown back and time and has to find a way back home. During this, she ends up marrying this guy for protection from this evil ancestor of her present-day husband and eventually falls in love with him. She has to battle with her heart and mind as she juggles to marriages and the thoughts of how she is going to get home and if she really does want to go home. Really good story. I tried reading the book but struggled reading it so I just watched the TV show.

My number-one romance peeve: "I can fix him." Honey, if he's a jerkwad, do you really think he's just going to change because you love him? No, he's probably going to remain a jerkwad... Yes, you can change some people in some situations. But they generally have to /want/ to change before they actually /can/ change.

"I can fix him!" I cry, gathering the splintered pieces of wood scattered across the clearing. It's little more than kindling, covered in his life-sap. Slivers dig into my hands, and I can barely see through puffy red eyes as I fill my arms. Back at my hut at the edge of the woods, I carefully attempt to piece the body back together, a complex puzzle of twisted branches and gnarled bark. My hearth fire spits fitfully below the large black cauldron, gold-green liquid making heavy *bloop* sounds as it bubbles and swirls. The Raven chained to my bedframe calls loudly, his wings beating a frantic storm as I move towards him, large jagged knife in hand. It's quick. His blood spills over the rough-hewn form, and I hoarsely rasp the ancient words, adding the sap to the mess on my packed earth floor. The branches twitch and groan, snapping back together, the still-green wood fiber meshing anew. He draws breath, and his green-gold eyes flick open.

@@alicat7633 In the comics, Batman fell in love with Talia al Ghul. She got pregnant and Bruce straightened right out, hung up the cape and stopped being Batman so he could be Dad. But Talia wanted Batman, not Bruce, so she lied the baby was stilborn and adopted him/her to a well-to-do family. If they ran with BatDad and let his nightmares persist it might have made for an interesting arc, as he confronted his conflicted interests between being dad and punching thugs. @@Uriel238 oh yeah. There are so many bad Batman take is hard to keep track. Plus I’m not a fan of the whole Bruce/ Talia pairing so I try to avoid that at all costs. That just seems like an annoying writer who doesn’t know Batman which, to be fair, is most writers. Bruce is a good dad and even though They don’t always get along, his kids make him happy. It would be nice if DC would forget about the out of character taking the trauma out on kids thing. Ohh I guess The big wedding did the same thing. Tried to make it so BatCat can’t married because that’ll be the only thing that will make Bruce happy and there can be no Batman with happiness. That’s bullshit for so many reasons. Selina makes him happy but they are not going to fix each other, if DC remembered his family they would remember that his kids make him happy, and if they knew their character they would know that although Bruce becoming Batman came from his trauma it was also to help people and it has become him protecting Gotham. He won’t give that up unless he has too. Side note, Unfortunately for the characters, Harley is probably the only person who could even be a therapist for the batfam.

Ugh that cliche where someone accidentally falls on someone else or accidentally gets caught in a scandalous-looking position with someone else and their partner of love interest/crush accidentally walks in on it with the most coincidental timing ever and immediately makes a fuss, coming straight to the conclusion that the other is cheating on them, and runs away without giving a chance for ANY explanation to be given. "BUT WAIT, ITS NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE, I SWEAR!" One of my pet peeves.

Don't even get me started on how many wattpad romances that have the following cliches; * Jealous/Vengeful Ex that attempts to ruin their relationship *Best Friend ends up sleeping with female protagonist's old brother or hooks up with their ex. *Male protagonist has "emotional trauma". *The "he's an alpha" crap. *Girl goes back to abusive boyfriend/husband because she thinks there's still a good side to them. (Honey you need help if you're writing about that. ಠ╭╮ಠ )

@@chloeb6093 I wouldn't say that's always bad. It's only bad when the male character has a trauma, but then he meets his "true love" and suddenly all his problems are gone. Because...that's not how overcoming trauma works. Sure, a partner can provide emotional support, but usually you'd need professional help to overcome it. But as long as you portray this realistically, I don't think it will be a problem

+Depressed Optimist I wouldn't say no build up. There were many little moments throughout book 3 and 4. They couldn't have the most fleshed out romance because Bryke had to be more subtle because of Nickelodeon. Also, it doesn't help that Bryke sucks at writing in romances. Heck, Zuko and Katara is probably the most well developed couple in both shows and they didn't even like each other (or at least in Bryke's mind. Not in all the other cast crew members' minds). To me, Korrasami seemed better developed than Kataang, so I ship them. Maybe the comics will do them more justice.

What I find most annoying is when the gorgeous male protagonist falls madly for the unnatractive female, and she has NO personality. I honestly couldn't care less about the appearance difference, like it happens, some hot guys do fall for ugly girls and vice versa -- but it's the fact that the insecure, unattractive girl has absolutely NOTHING else to recommend her. She's so often just bland. Like you can look past appearance if there's character, genuine goodness etc, but not when the person is horrifically insecure and nothing else 😂

Yes, when the only relatable quality is his/her insecurity (cause also see geeky guy gets hot chick) and the two characters have nothing in common, there's no reason to believe in the attraction. Couples that don't make "visual' sense to us (hot vs. Not so much) do happen, but usually because they connected over some other commonality.

Love triangles suck. Gotta agree there. Love _squares_ can be funny though. Person A loves person B who loves person C who loves person D who loves person A. And from a fanfic writer's perspective, it has the added bonus that you can do an everybody wins ending without anyone being sent off alone. Because you know fanfics with romance subplots always have to end with everyone paired off. (I'm kidding of course. I know that's a pretty stupid trope.)

Miraculous Ladybug man, it takes the love rectangle trope and has so much fun with it and makes it amazing. Marinette is Ladybug. Adrien is Chat Noir. Marinette and Adrien are classmates and sort of friends, would be closer but Marinette (and Adrien too a bit) is very shy. Ladybug and Chat fight crime and protect Paris together. They have no idea who the other is. Marinette loves Adrien. Adrien loves Ladybug. Marinette is wrapped up in Asrien to fully notice Chat and sees him as mildly annoying. Adrien wants to get to know Marinette more, but only really has eyes for Ladybug. It's fantastic.

Instalove is only bad when it's not acknowledged as instalove by the book and is treated as a healthy relationship. If the author acknowledges it as instalove, it can work. Like in Heathers the movie, there's instalove between two characters, but it's treated as such.

A love triangle is honestly an interesting situation: If the triangle is linear (A => B => C) the dynamic works very differently than if the triangle is convergent (A => B B => C => A), and I've honestly never seen a cyclic love triangle where there's rivalry, imagine the possibilities, the drama! The pain of getting rejected with a punch to the face, or punching a guy you thought was trying to mess with you just to find out not only he was your crush's crush but that you were his crush.

The other point she didn't include is when they go overboard on the sappy romantic moments, even with married couples. For example one moment you'll have some flirting, the next they're both on the floor play-wrestling with the girl shrieking with laughter and a passionate kiss at the end. Romantic films do stuff like this often, and for some reason it's considered "hot" (to me it's creepy and very sexually suggestive). Both sides can deeply love each other without losing their self-control. Plus, it makes the relationship seem much more erotic, not agape as it should be.

I'm kinda writing a story where "I'm Yours/You're Mine" is kind of a cultural thing, and while there are asshats who perceive it as "mine to own", the real meaning that most people see it is as is "mine to cherish, to love, and to protect", and there is a clear understanding that this is a mutual thing and that the two parties are equal. Does that sound okay?

@@valhatan3907 yea, thanks, I know, the translation is terrible 😂 but it's fine, most words that are translated from Hebrew to English or the opposite sounds REALLY bad since the culture is different and the meaning of words is too. for example, last week I went on a trip in Hungary, beautiful place, I was on a public bus and I noticed one olderly woman was standing while everyone else were sitting, most of them younger than her. now in Israel it's something this kind of situation would make a public rage (I'm not kidding) since it's the BASIC in our culture to respect the elderly, I was horrified (😂🤦🏾‍♀️) to see her standing, in my country 10 other people would already give their sits,its one if the most impolite things to sit in a bus and let someone older than you stand, we even have stickers in every bus in my country "get up, before an elder" it's a verse, part of the Tanack (elder also means wise person since elders are mostly count as the wisest with the most experience, so even here the translation is bad) so of course I immediately got up and offered her my place 🤦🏾‍♀️😂😂 it didn't go well, it appears that it looked... bad to offer her my place? as if I was mocking her for her age? (which was obviously the opposite) it happened to me again when I tried to help some elder women to take her things up the stairs, in Israel its, again, not only exept but the NORM, in Hungary she looked at me as if saying "are you mocking me for my age?" I tried to explain that's it's a "mizva" for me, meaning it's something good for me to help, it's something common we say in Israel to people that don't want to help, it's as if I'm saying "I'm not helping to you so you have nothing to be ashamed of, I'm just earning good points from G d, it's you that help me become a better person." it also didn't translate well and she just left as if she didn't understand a word 😂😂 I guess words have different connotations in different cultures and that's why we are so weirded when hearing their meaning in other cultures.

Well, it kinda falls on what you personally are physically attracted to. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and whatnot. People go with the shirt off in stories constantly because it's a fairly common attraction and it shows the guy takes care of himself physically. It's even that way with females. Ask yourself what attracts you physically to a person without talking to them or knowing anything about them and most likely that's your answer. What guides you to make you want to talk to this person that you've never met before? Don't be confused, it's just preference. Personally, I'm a back and arm person. I ADORE a strong looking back, shoulders and arms on a guy. Not exactly sure why, but that's usually where my eyes gravitate when I see potential eye candy.

I've got a peeve in romances well not exclusively romances. I'm gay and sometimes I want to read books with a gay protagonist. The problem is every book with a gay protagonist is a romance and that's fine but that's usually all the book is, subplots are usually none existent or dull. Another problem is the actual lack of romance, the majority of gay romances I've read the couple is having sex within the first couple of chapters and once they have they do it in every other chapter. Let's have some more romance people, I'm much more interested in reading about two people getting to know each other and going on dates and the like.

Do you like Doctor Who by any chance? I wrote a fanfiction a while back called Gemini, and I tried to avoid those issues in the two guys' budding relationship: There's no sex at all between them in this first installment, there's no love-at-first-sight (even though it looks like there is at first owing to some time travel shenanigans), their first kiss doesn't magically make them feel better about everything else that's happening, and it's clear at the end that they still have a lot more to get to know about each other for when the initial warm-and-fuzzies novelty wears off. Would you like to take a look?

Edward M THIS! It's so frustrating to see LGBT+ characters sexually objectified like this and touted as good representation. At that point, do me a favor and don't call it romance, call it what it is, erotica. Same sex pairings aren't actually any different than het pairings, same arguments, same hangups, same process to dating, ultimately. If you're straight and don't jump your partner's bones every second you're with them, why do you think same sex couples do the opposite? I have the same complaint about tv shows. The ones with more LGBT+ rep seem to always be uber sexualized. And the shows that could have great, realistic if dramatic same sex pairings just tease the idea constantly and never freaking just do it. :/

I hate that trope where someone thinks their boy/girlfriend is cheating because of some crazy misunderstanding, it uselessly makes the accuser look stupid and paranoid, they jump to the conclusion that their partner is cheating WAY faster than any rational person would cheating in general annoys me it's so often a lazy cop-out, want to break up the love interest's relationship make the rival a cheater , want to ad drama without exploring your charters have one of them cheat, doesn’t matter if it completely out of character or if the person has something else that could add dram while staying in character like workaholic tendencies or emotional barriers

Obsession could work if you give your readers/viewers a reason to believe that it is either part of the plot or a starting point in a character arc. For example, in my groups Curse of Strahd campaign the "following my character around" etc. is done to show that her love interest (Alexander) is vey similar, if not a mirror to the villain, Strahd Von Zarovich. Since Strahd is Alexander's older brother it makes sense that they may have similar tendencies but different motivations and feelings regarding the situation. While Alexander has similar tendencies to Strahd, he tries to overcome them and shows embarrassment and distress when he falls into his vampiric tendencies. This is framed by the PC playing Alexander as an internal battle between nature vs nurture. And what’s great too is my character calls this other PC out when he acts like Strahd and actually gets scared when things go too far. At that point the two characters talk it out and fix whatever the situation was.

I agree with your opinion on love triangles with the girl or the guy being in love with two people at once and can’t decide because that’s just dumb. But if the triangle is more like the guy or girl has already decided on who they want and it’s the third party trying to work their way in, I think that could be some really cool drama that can be developed. Or if the girl or guy doesn’t like either of them or if they’re unhappy in their current relationship and are trying to find ways of being with the one they love. They could be in a toxic relationship and are trying to find ways to escape and be with the love interest of the story. Or the main character could be the one making the relationship toxic and are fighting to keep their partner with them. With love triangles, the sky’s the limit with different ways you can construct them and make them interesting. Don’t just make it the generic “I can’t decide” trope. The triangle in my story is that the main girl is in love with a guy and he already loves someone else and she’s trying to learn to accept that

I love that kind of triangle. In my story, the main character, Ashley, is already dating Lukas, and the third party is Lukas's brother Jared, who has a massive crush on Ashley. The drama is really fun to write, too. Ashley and Lukas have a huge fight about something (still haven't decided what), Ashley goes to a party to distract herself, and ends up getting drunk and kissing Jared. Then when Jared and Lukas get into a fight, Jared throws it in his face that he and Ashley kissed, which spirals into this major fight between their entire friend circle as they all pick sides. Best love triangle, 10/10

@crim899
@crim899 5 жыл бұрын
@@eosofspades_357 this is old, but I agree with Corlys. Why doesn't Jared accept that Ashley will not like him because she's with his brother? Have you looked into this being a possible obsession for him -- to the point where it's toxic/unhealthy? Is there a good reason why Ashley kisses Jared? Because -- inserting my own opinion for a second -- I hate the cliche where the mc (often female + male since I haven't seen this done with other types) kisses the friend or a/the brother of their boyfriend (or a random boi) in a 'we had a fight and now I hate him _oh and I'm drunnnnnnnk!'_ type of fashion. But most people in stable and healthy relationships don't get space for themselves and immediately invalidates their relationship at a party, drunk. This is how you create someone's a worse relationship nightmare. Adding to that mess is a kinda terrible cliche that has the MC usually just invalidating her boyfriend's feelings with an 'it didn't mean anything!' and doesn't try to understand how this could have _serisously_ hurt her boyfriend. Also, why does she not tell him before his brother holds it over his head? There's a lot of trope potential in your plot... and most (or all) are cliches. Overall; I'm pretty sure I've read this on Wattpad before.

It's actually far more beautiful than that in some cases. It's a constantly mutual display of caring about the other person, even in the roughest moments of life. They'll call each other their "greatest earthly friend" for obvious reasons. Some of the stories involving World War II veterans and their spouses I've read show this. Some of those ladies were willing to help care for their husbands if they came back with life altering injuries or severe PTSD (and didn't love them any less). Few today it seems want to make that extra effort.

You know what's a guaranteed way to get rid of the love triangle? Polyamory. I mean, I'm aware that monogamy is the norm in most modern Western cultures, and if your story is based in a time and place where that's to be expected, then go with it. However, if you're writing a fantasy or science fiction novel, you have the opportunity to do anything you want when it comes to designing your culture and how it views romantic relationships, why not have non-monogamous relationships a thing? At the very least, it'll be a good plot twist.

Insta romances actually do happen in real life (and last a lifetime), but... but... why write about it? There's not much to write about! It's quite instant! How do you expect to fill up a whole book with an instant romance when not even the people who are living it can't give that much info out. But you know what they do say? It's still a lot of work! But you don't see that in instant romance stories, you see a fairytale you can't possibly connect to if you enjoy coherency just a little bit.

"Twilight" was definitely one of the worst books I've ever read. I was 30 pages into it and the main character was still ruminating, - uh, will her ditsy mom remember to pick up her dry cleaning???... Zzzzzzzzzzz......... [I stopped reading.]

To be fair, in Twilight Bella DID make a choice - she explicity let everyone know that she liked Edward more than Jacob the entire time. However, her relationship with Edward was pretty much half, if not all, of those pet peeves.

The abs thing is also really assumptive. Not EVERYONE is into ripped dudes with hella abs. The writer's idea of sexy is not a universal, it's an opinion, and restating that opinion every time a character walks into, or just through, a room gets old really fast if it's not what you're into.

Some authors probably think there has to be a romantic angle to draw the ladies. Or to give the protagonist a reason to become involved in the situation. We women don't always want a love story. We are perfectly willing to read or watch a movie in which nobody hugs or kisses. If the protagonists are a man and a woman, we don't expect them to be in love at the end. And sometimes authors use a romance angle because they really stink at writing and a love triangle is the only way they can introduce anything resembling emotional stakes to the story. (Yes, I watch the 'Terrible Writing Advice' series.)

You pretty much described all the recent best sellers hahaha. Twilight and 50 shades of Grey come to mind. I read the first twilight book and like it but hated the second book. Then I read bits of 50 shades to see if I would like it. First off 50 shades is an embarrassment to the BDSM community. I am not part of that community but I know people that are. BDSM is all about trust between the dom and sub. Not doing something extreme because it would make a guy you barely know happy. Plus the writing was terrible. And I agree about instalove. It annoys me to no extent

For anyone who hasn't seen Miraculous, let me explain. The main protagonist, Marinette, has a superhero alterego, Ladybug. The secondary protagonist, Adrien, also has an alterego as a superhero, Chat Noir. Ladybug and Chat Noir are a super-duo, and Marinette and Adrien go to the same school. Marinette/Ladybug has a major crush on Adrien, and Adrien/Chat Noir is in love with Ladybug. Thing is, they don't know eachother's secret identities. M/L thinks of C as a friend. A/C thinks of M as a friend. It's really complicated.
