Whats funny is that the voice actors and producers didnt know Mami was gonna die till they worked on that part. The producers even tried to change the creators mind and the voice actor cried when she got to the scene

Technically it wasn't that Iwakami was tricked but rather he wanted a magical girls anime but he didn't want to actively be part of the process. So he just told Shinbo that he'd give him free realm over the project and that he was free to choose his team. Iwakami also never told the Production comittee what he making beyond "a magical girls anime". Shinbo then went crazy on the project and recruited Urobuchi (the king of depressing stories) aong with other big names for his team and did whatever he wanted. So in the end is less that the producers were lied to but that they didn't give a damn what Shinbo was making. The only people who got "lied to" were the voice actors and that's a common thing in the industry as they don't want to influence their performance. So they just tell them enough to get "in-character" and leave it there. I remember hearing the Corpse Party interviews of the voice actors and they would mention how they literally went in blind without knowing the ways they would die. They just knew it was a horror, but that doesn't prepare you to record scenes like getting your eyes gouged out and your tongue cut while alive as you gurgle your despairing cries.

For me the origin of Nagisa's blood lust from Assasination Classroom will always hold a place in my heart. It was the first time I ever felt bad for laughing at a joke. When you learn how he became that way it makes so many jokes and gags in the series feel... gross. Any show that can do THAT deserves recognition

MissOngakuSama I figured it out pretty early on though? The fact that witches were magical girls came to mind much earlier because as I watched I was thinking about how witches were made in the first place and magical girls were the first idea to come to mind. With the fact that magical girls purify their souls with the witches 'egg' lead me to think "What would happen if they didn't heal their soul with the egg?" And that's when it clicked that witches are magical girls.

Yeah, that Mami dying in Madoka shook me up when I first watched it. I remember coming in from school to see my mother starting up the 2nd episode, and I plunked down on the couch and was like, "Oh, this is adorable! Why did you start watching something this cute without me?" And then episode 3 happened... And we both just stared at the tv screen with dropped jaws, and then when the end credits rolled, I sharply turned my head and exclaimed, "WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?!?!?!" "I DIDN'T KNOW! Taking into account that there are anthropomorphic sapient beings living side-by-side with humans in the DragonBall series, having a tail wasn't that much of an oddity to give everyone a heads up that Goku was *that* different. Blindsided people. Piccolo being an alien however - that was seen from a mile away. It was obvious he was a "green man from Mars" type.

One of my favorite plot twist is actually one that's cute, rather than upsetting. And that's the ending of episode 10 of Yuri!!! On Ice. It's something so simple, yet it explains so much, and makes it almost necessary to rewatch the show a second time with this new knowledge, because it changes character motivations and dynamic.

I love how in Another they don't just close down the school and move it somewhere else, even though there's a nearby city that can and has taken students before. Horrible cruse on our school that kills people? But it's only tied to one year? Do we just not have that year and have the kids commute to another? No. OK how about closing the location and building another school somewhere else? No. Really? Like a hundred people have died from this curse that's tied to one class in one school and the town knows about it and yet does nothing. Not even calling in priest to ask what they can do.

She goes to clubs outside of her class abd those kids are fine. Meaning that the curse is tied to the desks and number of people in the room. Remember that it turned out to be his aunt because they moved an extra desk to the staff room for her. This suggests that if they simply shut down that year or moved it to a different location the curse might remain at the school and in that class. I'm just saying it's worth a try given how many people have died from the curse.,

Witches are magical girls, mami’s fate, homura’s wish, madoka’s wish, that rebellion took place in a labyrinth, the ending to rebellion (my personal favorite,) what the incubators are, etc. The show is a ride.

I’m probably the only person who knew something was off well before Mami died. The atmosphere blatantly gave off an unsettling, disturbing vibe, and the magical girls were already dealing with some very dark subject matter, such as preventing suicide. What Mami’s death really did (in addition to being tragic on its own due to Mami having just found a friend) was change the show from having an optimistic tone to a near-nihilistic one. While the first two episodes end positively, all the ones afterwards end with increasing despair and sadness. Granted, the finale ultimately culminates with a bittersweet ending, but the damage was done, and that’s what really makes Mami’s death poignant.

I'll be honest, none of those FMA:B twists were particularly shocking. They didn't really put the story into a new perspective. The Little Witch Academia one was a very well done twist. It completely explains why Akko and Chariot did the things that they did, why Chariot didn't reveal her identity initially, etc. It completely changes how we view the very first scene of the show. That's part of what makes a good twist. It subverts your expectations and changes how you view the story.

Honestly, Kill La Kill kinda telegraphed that reveal about an episode or two before the actual reveal, unless you're saying the scene where Ragyo dumps the baby she deemed a failed experiment (Rukyo) is the reveal. And really, with Maddoka Magika, the big reveal with Homura was a MUCH bigger and more shocking plot twist. Edit July 25, 2018: Well, I just binge-watched School Live after watching this top 10 and while I thought it was a decent zombie series, I really feel like there was a missed opportunity with it. The whole 'plot-twist' of the series came out at the end of the very first episode, leaving the audience with basically another zombie apocalypse anime that, frankly, I don't feel was as well done as High School of the Dead from a story-telling perspective. Yeah, the girls had to contend with one of their own basically living out delusions and there was one or two other minor plot twists later on, but imagine how shocking it would have been if the whole series was essentially self-contained within Yuki's delusion and it was the LAST episode that revealed that everything was all in her head the entire time. Oh sure you could drop little clues here and there, but make it ambiguous so it could easily be overlooked, only brought into clarity with the big reveal. Now THAT would have been one serious plot twist.

Every plot twist in Madoka Magica deserves to be at number 1 though. The death scene, the time travel reveal (and what the magical girls really are), Madoka's wish. Hell, even the final decision made by Homura in the movies as well as the reveal of who the witch is in the movie deserves a spot. I think Archer's identity in Unlimited Blade Works and the reveal of Lain's identity in Serial Experiments Lain deserves a spot or at least an honorable mention though.

I'm totally with you. If I hadn't known that already from the Manga and other adaptations, it would've taken me by quite a bit of surprise. Honestly that was one of the more complete and spiritually faithful renditions of the story that I've personally experienced. But really it was more his motivations than his identity that was the plot twist for me. Either way it did take a bit of a sudden turn there.

Anime America had a alright plot twist list but let me tell you mine: 1. The Higarashi Time Loop where all the murderous mayhem has been happening 100 times without you knowing and right at the beginning of the Anime is actually the 101th time. 2. The Titans from Shingeki no Kyojin that you've been destroying are your own kind who are kidnapped slaves that were turned into mindless titans by a rival country in order to kill you. 3. The Last Another Member who in the end turns out to be your own Aunt who's been dead for two years who you have to personally kill one last time with your own hands. 4. The School Live Revelation where all the fun and happy go lucky times with your school friends has been nothing more but a figment of your imagination when in reality you're living in a zombie apocalypse and have sought shelter in a abandoned school. 5. The Blood C Warrior Saya who in the end is the very thing that she's been killing all this time that has been part of a experiment by the very person she trusted.

honestly, while her death was shocking i feel like learning witches are born from magical girls and theirs no way to escape that fate is more impactful solely because it makes you think mami's death might have been a blessing because now she didn't have to turn into a witch which would have litteraley broken my heart. the fact that she can become a witch in the psp game is crazy enough but the fact that learning that bit of knowledge changes how you perceive her death is mind-blowing.

a few of my favorite plotwist was - Natsu is END and Zeref brother 😂, the whole series him and gray wanted to kill END and END stood for Ethernanos Natsu Dragneel 💀 also that Natsu was originally dead as a kid , and was revived by Zeref. these were great plotwists surrounding Fairytail. - Shigaraki is One For All - Nana’s grandson - Higurashi time loop - Angel beats nagisa dies, the freaking baby dies , and few seconds later tomoya dies. that was tragic. -Yuno already won the game - Haku is a boy - Black Zetsu set up the whole Uchiha clan for generations to bring back Kaguya -Kaguya is the moon - Ikuno is a lesbian and had feelings for Ichigo the whole time ( Darling in the franxx ) -the actual killers in danganronpa always shocked me that’s all i can think of for now (:

Although Madoka Magicka certainly had the biggest cultural impact, I would put one of Higurashi's plot twists as number 1 since it did the most solid job of fooling me for over a dozen episodes: -In the first arc, Keiichi is the murderer. Another plot twist that isn't from the horror genre but which can easily compete with them is in GTO, when you find out WAY later when the girl attempts suicide, and then you learn she was never sexually assaulted by her teacher, she made it all up out of jealousy and she has been trapped by this lie the entire time. That plot twist was so integral, it was clear that it was the first plot point the writer came up with despite being hidden for more than half of the story. Edit: Also, the plot twist in Trigun where you find out this isn't a western, it's a sci-fi story. The entire genre of the show is a plot twist.

Two of my favorite plot twists was the fact that in Digimon Data Squad, 1. Kurata turns out to be a complete monster, going so far as to kill innocent Digimon and use them for experiments, even using the data of the creatures he killed to create his own “digimon” to be used as killing machines and nothing more. Yeah 2. Marcus’ father, Spencer, was the one who discovered the DNA Charge and the original creator of the Data Link Digivices.

I kind of figured Madoka would be on the list and I mean there are a few good reasons. How the show presented it's self from the opening to the ending up till episode 3 made you think it was a happy go lucky show. Considering how nothing bad happened in the first two episodes, you would just assume it's a cute show. Because of this, when Mami does die, we become shock because the show mislead us or that's the feeling we get, even though all the signs were there in the opening and ending, but we ignored them. Clever creativeness at it's finest.
