I thought that Zorark was legendary because the first time I ever saw it was in a Pokémon card that was 4x the size of a normal Pokémon card. Why would a regular Pokémon get that treatment, I thought, surely it must be legendary?

Rotom is the one that got me. I really thought it was legendary, but I cannot for the life of me remember why. May have been the music thing. I also grew up not knowing the distinction between mythical and legendary, and I've come to realize that while it exists, it is a pointless distinction.

My guesses before watching- Would bet they are on the list: Arcanine- classified as the legendary pokemon. That one episode in the anime where it is shown with the 3 legendary birds. Unown- mysterious, around legendaries, pokemon movie 3 Lucario- all the treatment Zoroark- all the treatment Volcarona- seemed legendary to me Rotom- also seemed legendary Spiritomb- its backstory, way to get it, inclusion in game, no weakness typing at introduction Maybe on the list: absol- has a good legendaryish backstory lapras and milotic- seemed majestic and rare ( one is a gift in its debut game, other is probably the most frustrating to find and evolve in its debut game) Probably not but last guesses anyways: metagross- why have 2 psuedo-legendary. Ditto- failed mew. And legendaries have been created before so why not

Zoroark and Lucario were initially intended to be mythical Pokémon. You could only obtain Lucario though special events in Gen 4 and Zoroark through special events in Gen 5. It was only until Gen 5 and Gen 6 were you able to encounter Riolu and Zorua in the wild respectively without trading with someone that had bred them. This also wasn't the first time GameFreak did this, which further added confusion. Manaphy could be bred to produce Phione, although the difference is that Phione could never evolve into a Manaphy. The decision to make both Zoroark and Lucario mainline Pokémon rather than event exclusive was likely due to their popular design and the demand that came with it. Further impacted by the movies and Zoroark being N's signature Pokémon in B/W (a mistake not repeated in Sun/Moon with Type Null). If letting kids have pretty pixel designs sells more merch then let 'em have it. Generally.

Pokémon you could only get ONE of in a game back in the day I thought was legendary. For example, kabuto, omanyte, aerodactyl, lapras… etc. Although more aerodactyl than kabuto/omanyte because the latter two evolved and I didn’t think legends could evolve. Well, they didn’t back then. It honestly wasn’t until recently that I realized aerodactyl wasn’t legendary when it started being available in the fkng wild😂 and lapras I thought was legend because of generation 2. Could only get 1, on a specific day hidden in a cave, and it had an overworld sprite. Exactly how you find the other legendaries
