Episode 339 of Love At First Scent
This was a KZbin Live broadcast streamed on Tuesday 24th January 2023. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
In this episode, I was joined by award-winning fragrance journalist Alice Du Parcq for a rundown of our most precious perfumes: scents that hold a very special place in our collections. Our chat covered a host of goodies, including a bottle of Guerlain Chamade from a Mumbai antique shop, a hand-painted bottle of Acqua Di Parma Colonia and an astonishing Chanel toolbox (it has to be seen to be believed) containing an incredible stash of mini bottles.
You can find Alice on Instagram and other social media at @aliceduparcq.

Alice collecting minis in a Chanel box for her daughters is the most touching thing I've heard today! And 100% agree the husband can absolutely not have such a beautiful box for his shed!! Also the amouage attar has got me seriously intrigued. Would love to smell that which is why I want to visit Oman one day... well done both of you 👏

Emeraude was the first perfume that came to my mind when I read the title of this video. The other day, in a comment, I mentioned how there were times when perfume was worn, like jewels, on special occasions. I recently saw a video interview of Veronique Coty where she says they don't know why the name Emeraude was chosen for the fragrance. Of course she was referring to, that her great-great grandfather is not known to have left a statement about it to the afterworld. Smelling Emeraude, even in its widely frowned upon, current Coty edition, will tell anybody who wants to know it, why it is called emerald! There is a greenness to the oriental composition. And if one would still be in doubt I recommend taking a look at some classical advertising images for it. This perfume IS a treasure. It has been around for more than 100 years and it is a classic in very good shape. As much as I applaud Ms Coty's endeavour of bringing it back in a higher quality version than the, still very nice one, Coty is still producing, we all wished she had stuck to the idea, we all know her ancestor was living by: " make a good perfume of high quality, offer it in a beautiful bottle and sell it at a reasonable price and you will be successful!". Besides, as much as she claims now having stuck to the original formula, I have heard her say before that the formula for Spoturno has been modernized and given more lightness overall. And if I remember that moment, it is because of how much my heart sank at the idea. Hopefully she was just referring to having to use modern materials and apply restrictions. I don't know what exactly to make of it now. Fact is: Emeraude is a precious gem!

A forgettable perfume, Kieran NYC 10am Flirt (yes, I know…), does one remarkable thing: It lets me remember my son when he was a year old, as that’s when I first tried the perfume. In the ongoing haze that is parenthood, I sometimes realize my early memories of him are drawn from photos and videos, not from actual memory, but this perfume makes my stomach do a pleasant, tingly flip as it evokes a real, raw set of memories of my little man that I can’t otherwise conjure. And for that reason, I treasure it, even if my tastes have shifted since buying it. Wonderful work as always. This channel, I just can’t say enough good about it.

Persolaise, your conversation with Alice was a perfect example of professionals demonstrating their passion and respect for one another with the utmost eloquence. That may sound cliché, but this honestly was my favorite episode of LAFS. Please consider more conversations with Alice in this fashion - I could listen to her stories and yours for hours. As an aside: a fragrance dear to my heart is that of a vintage bottle of Kenzo Pour Homme I procured some years ago - apparently a favorite of my late father that I didn’t quite appreciate as a child in the 90s, smelling the scent in its original form immediately ushered in those pleasant and not-so-pleasant recollections of his person. It is not fully achieved in the current formulation (although not butchered by any means); thus, it will, with pleasure, be shared with my son to conjure up unknown visions of his grandfather and hopefully enable him to develop his own interpretations of his grandfather’s person through scent and stories. Thank you for today.

I have so many perfumes, I could open a store, as I have been collecting them for decades. If I had to pick one as the most special is Guerlain’s Guet Apens in a special beautiful dark blue bottle. It is a dab on and not a spray and I still have it but seldom wear it, but now and then I dab it on or smell it.

Absolutely delightful perfume conversation. Thank you! My precious perfume is Ylang Ylang by E Coudray - although only an EDT it was a limited edition and I bought it in a inventory closeout sale for very little money so it was a blind buy and it is a divine combination of aldehydes, Ylang Ylang and sandalwood. The aldehydes and sandalwood transport me to the 70's of glitter platforms and halter jumpsuits - sexy, feminine yet persistent. I have a fairly large collection with many that are far more expensive but this scent is quite unique.

Thanks to both of you for a lovely episode, it was such a treat to listen to your stories. The only bottle I own with a story attached would be an old bottle of Shiseido - Feminite du Bois, the beautiful bordeaux coloured one. I bought it many years ago, when I started to be interested in perfume. I didn't own a car then and had to take the bus to a mall on the other side of town to visit a brick-and-mortar perfumery and found the whole Feminite du Bois range on sale, as it was on the way out, so I grabbed a bottle , it was a bargain. I ran to catch the bus back, but forgotten to pay the fare (i.e. buy a ticket from the vending machine). Of course, I got a fine for not paying the fare and the fine was more than the price of the Shiseido :D I still have the bottle and love it, it was worth every penny, but I always remember to pay my fare :D

Ohh wow. I had to leave a comment. I'm very fortunate to have a decant of the Amouage Tribute you showed. It is for me one of the most brilliant things done by Amouage and I rarely hear it spoken of. And as I'm aware yes the red boxes are extremely difficult to get. And there are more recent black box releases. To the best of my knowledge. Brilliant stream Persolaise thank you and your guest 🙏✌🏻
