Imagine a band called 'NO'. And they are the warm up band for YES. The announcer says, "Everybody give it up for NO! And the crowed replies Yessss! The announcer gets frustrated and says NO! . But the crowd replies Yesssss! Eventually the band, NO, doesn't get to come on stage. Sadly enough, the band 'NO' never makes it into the big times.

I hope it's the first option, because it's somehow easier to handle.
@DX70368 жыл бұрын
well I dont really think them as being "prog" but they certainly are more complex than those "Coheed and Cambria" (who I didnt know until now), and they also don't include Focus , Camel , Gentle Giant , Kansas and lots more...again they only pick up the most popular one , but the fact is we're talking about prog music and popularity has nothing to do with it , is just about the music
@manolmomchilov11928 жыл бұрын
DX7036 Cream are an early example of really professional jazz/blues/pop musicians coming together and making something new, heavy, original and unique. I'm not even discussing their musicianship. Ginger Baker - one of the first drummers to have a second bass drum. Cream were taking music loudness to a completely different level: it's one thing when you play a musically complex composition with a standard (of the time) rock equipment, it's a completely different experience when you attack the audience with a million Watts of sound, produced by (the newly emerged) Marshalls. And Jack Bruce's compositions were really complex, multilayered, filled with irregular rhytms.... Cream may be perceived as "just that 60s hippie band", but they are more prog than some of the bands on this list.
@manolmomchilov11928 жыл бұрын
DX7036 And you're right about ommited bands. I would add such bands as Egg, Faust, Tangerine Dream, lots of the so-called "Krautrock" movement... This is just a list, compiled by people, who really don't know music that well.

It's not a terrible list overall, but indeed to not have Gentle Giant on it, even as an honorable mention, while you have Tool and other BS on it is just criminal. @@montygreen6228 Hey Monty, I saw them at the academy as well! I lived on Long Island and whenever they toured I'd see them in the city and also at the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead. Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, and Pink Floyd are English. Rush are Canadian. So obviously Obi Wan needs to put down the light saber and study up a bit before posting. Sadly, the US really didn't have any major entries in the original flowering of Prog. We had psychedelia of course, which has various similarities, but it's not the same. Some things that, say, The Doors did were very close to progressive rock. Zappa, who was mentioned here, I don't consider progressive rock either. He was sort of his own complete universe really. For a brief period there Styx was almost a serious prog rock band, though closer to pop-prog. Ultimately, most of the later US bands that some would call prog are not in my opinion, they are more metal than prog. Tool I'll give a pass, though they are extremely heavy most of the time as well.

But if I wanted something ‘POPPIER’: ELO, Kansas, The Moody Blues, Focus, Supertramp, The Alan Parsons Project, Mike Oldfield, and (if you want to consider them prog) 10cc. Soon thereafter I discovered ‘NEWER’ stuff: Rush, The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, and (if you want to consider them prog) Trans-Siberian Orchestra / Savatage. Putting King Crimson and Yes on number 6 and 5 respectively was actually insulting. While I am a big Dream Theater fan. They do not beat KC, Yes and ELP not by a long shot. Also, not even a mention of queensryche? Bloody criminal.

It's all personal preference. I like Primus - just have become a huge fan of Steven Wilson. Grew up loving typical art rock/prog - ELP, Yes, Genesis. Not sure I've ever liked anyone as much as Steven Wilson.

I can't for the life of me fathom why anyone would want to illustrate the best progressive rock bands in history with so much footage of those bands' largely unrepresentative pop songs, as demonstrated by many of the tracks selected to showcase Genesis, ELP and Yes, for example. It's quite bizarre that the compiler couldn't find more progressive examples to truly reflect those bands' music.
