Hi John. Wow, I'm surprised to see that Willie Stargell card as the number #1, being such a later card in his run. Must be the low POP that pushed it that high. Thanks for all the work you do for our community John. You are really a great contributor and your efforts are second to none IMO. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays, talk soon my friend.

The Stargell definitely made the list due to the low POP in a 10. Not sure if it was a Stargell collector or a 1980 set builder, but obviously it got a lot of attention when it came up for auction. I appreciate your kind words Stephen! I really enjoy making content and sharing my love for baseball cards! Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as well my friend!

Thanks for sharing the video, John. Surprised that the 81 Topps Stargell made #1. Would have figured Boggs, Ripken, Sandberg or Mattingly would be there. No Wade Boggs or Sandberg rookies, either. 80's cards of Barry Bonds still interested by collectors despite his PED usage. Collectors are paying high prices for 80's cards, too.

You're welcome Kevin. I think the highest a PSA 10 Boggs Topps rookie card has sold for is around $1,500 so it will probably never make a Top 10 video. A Tony Gwynn Topps rookie card made the list last month I think. Not sure where the Sandberg falls. Ripken's 82 Topps Traded in a 10 usually makes the list when one is sold. And just like Rose, there are a lot of Bonds fans out there despite both not being in the Hall.

I was into cards DEEP in the 80s and never heard of Tiffany

Tiffany is some of the most highly sought for cards in the 80s, due to their more limited print run. As for Griffey, however, I personally opt for the less desirable 1989 Star Company (purple border) Ad Griffey that's printed to just 6,000 copies. I think much less people know of these, despite them being licensed and limited. They're my alternative to the super expensive Tiffany versions of Griffey.

I believe they were only released in complete sets and had a limited production run - far less than the regular issue cards. So if you were just buying packs of cards in the 80s you probably didn't come across the Tiffany cards.

@@WadeBoggsFan That's correct, Tiffany was only in sets. Star Company was also only released in sets. I'm not sure why none of the baseball Star Company cards get any love. I once owned multiple sets of Griffey rookies, but they just haven't caught on like Tiffany cards. I only downsized to the Star ad Griffey rookie, because the reverse explains what Star Company was all about. All promo rookies of Griffey from Star (while limited) were mostly blank-back cards. I figured the ad rookie card added some background to an obscure baseball product, and would make it easier to sell later in the future. I figured once people catch on to these more obscure Griffey rookies, they'll eventually blow up in value. The biggest downside to the ad cards, is that PSA has a bad habit of not labeling them to the year. They often label them as "1988-1992 Star Ad", which I find to be extremely lazy. While they weren't often dated, it's not hard to do a little research. For example, I know my Griffey ad is a rookie, because the address listed on the reverse was different for Star in the 1980s than it was beginning in 1990. There's a New Jersey address for the 1980s ad cards and a Florida address for the 1990s ad cards. This clearly indicates different sets released at different time periods. Of course, we all want a rookie to be labeled as accurately as possible if we are relying on PSA to grade them. I find it extremely lazy and unacceptable for PSA to not even try to label these cards and differentiate them. It proves laziness and/or lack of knowledge on PSAs part.

Thanks for confirming about the Tiffanys. I think I have all of the Star Company Boggs cards that have been made including the ad back and promos. For some reason collectors just don't consider Star cards "legitimate" since I don't think they had a license. But the Jordan has become accepted and Panini and Leaf don't have a license and collectors still buy their cards. So I don't get it. I consider them valid cards for my Boggs collection. My good friend and "Boggsfather" of our Boggs collecting group probably has 100 of the factory sealed sticker sets (both the red and yellow). He loves them and buys some whenever he sees a group pop up for sale.

The 1980's are very interesting , I like the 84 Mattingly and 1981 Henderson , I could care less what collectors think about the 80's 1980 Rickey Henderson blows away the bowman of Ken Griffey 1984 Wade Boggs blows the 1986 barry bonds away the 1980 Bench smokes ken griffey topps traded away I like the 1982 Ripken , 1980 George Brett..

Thanks Mark. Different collectors have different tastes in what cards they like. But prices generally reflect what the majority of collectors prefer. I happen to really like the 1984 Topps Boggs card. But I realize that even in a PSA 10 most collectors would prefer a rookie card of Griffey. So his prices are higher. But for those who like the less popular cards it's good because we don't have to spend as much money to buy them as the more popular cards. 😃

Unfortunately I started collecting vintage cards in mid-2020, right before the spike in prices. While I wouldn't give up my Boggs collection for anything, I sometimes wish I had at least dabbled a bit in vintage years ago as I would have been able to take advantage of the lower prices.
