The Beatles had to be high when they wrote "I am the walrus"
@kenwilliams32088 жыл бұрын
+Josh Sutton The Beatles were sick of having every one of their songs chopped up, dissected, analyzed, and essentially turned inside out & upside down in an attempt to discover its "real meaning". So they set out to write something so strange, so unusual, and so off the wall, they figured the media would be pre occupied for months. That was how "I Am the Walrus" was born. It was a wickedly exaggerated parody - and it had the desired effect. So it was "here boys, have at this one"!

I would have to disagree with Pink Floyd being the most Psychedelic/most influential Psychedelic band. The majority of their albums are Prog Rock, especially later in their discography. Their early stuff has plenty of Psych Rock/Avant-Garde/Space Rock material, but a lot of that was because of Syd Barrett. Too bad the Velvet Underground didn't even get an honorable mention, but their debut is probably their most Psychedelic record. As for number 1, I would have personally put The Doors, Jimi Hendrix Experience, or the Byrds. Possibly even the Beatles.
@bingo45198 жыл бұрын

I disagree with the notion that The Pink Floyd were ever prog rock. Prog rock is defined by technical virtuousity over feel whereas psych is more based on feeling over technique. Pink Floyd always had more emotion and feel than prog bands whether it was in Water's intense lyrics/delivery or in Gilmour's crying solo's. Neither Gilmour nor Wright ever did the fast, classical-based runs so prevalent in prog.

Not psychedelic? 10. Tame is 100% psychedelic 9. Go listen to Days of Future Passed, In Search of a Lost Chord and On the Threshold of a Dream if you don't think they're not psychedelic (RIP Ray Thomas) 8. Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire, may I say more? (RIP Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker) 7. One of the inventors of the genre (RIP Roky Erikson) 6. 1965-1970 period, especially with albums like Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour (RIP John Lennon and George Harrison) 5. Research "the acid tests" which gave birth to the hippie culture and their 60s work were psychedelic all the way, including my all time Dead album "Anthem of the Sun". Like 13th floor, also one of the inventors of the genre (RIP Jerry Garcia) 4. They were there with The Dead even in their "Acid test days" and Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing at Baxter's, what trippy albums! (RIP Paul Kantner and Marty Balin) 3. Their debut says it all but their follow up Strange Days showed their psychedelia at their peak. (RIP Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek) 2. Absolutely psychedelic with all his albums! (RIP Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell) 1. They practically mastered the genre even when they went prog and deserve number 1! (RIP Syd Barrett and Richard Wright) Honorable mentions: Really, The Yardbirds? They were more blues and hard rock than psychedelia despite a few detours into the genre with their masterpiece "Roger the Engineer"! (RIP Keith Relf and I agree with you on that) They were more Folk Rock than psychedelia despite a few detours in the genre at their 66-68 period before going full country rock when Gram Parsons came in. (RIP Gene Clark, Michael Clarke and Gram Parsons. Another band that's not psychedelic) OK, I see them psychedelic from the side of electronic rock. OK, Frank can be a weirdo but showed psychedelic music can be done without drugs so he counts as psychedelic in their early days with the Mothers of Invention, especially their masterpiece album "Freak out!" (RIP Frank Zappa) They're psychedelic indeed but they are more alternative being the brainchild of Wayne Coyne. Sincerely, millennial neo hippie

I went through the Pink Floyd Discography. It's like one big acid trip. They started off as like a Beatley sounding band with a lot of weirdness mixed in, this is the beginning of the trip. 2nd and 3rd album get a bit weirder, most parts of the 3rd album seem kinda empty, yet so unique that they made less look like "More". 4th album is like the peak of the trip where the best thing they could come up with is random piano notes, loud organ strikes, animal noises, and a flute introduction to a fucked up drumming ceremony thing. After that is where they have AHM and Meddle, heavily psychedelic yet very acoustic and pleasing. There's a great precursor to the greatest album of all time, Obscured by Clouds, Then once it hits Dark Side, they just explode into a heavily immersive and long trip out where you're having the time of your life and the music is the best it's ever been; The middle of the trip. This trip lasts until The Wall, and after The Wall, it kinda starts to wear off and fizzle out, where their music is very much so still beautiful, but it seems more organized and not as intense. Toward the end they still have that unique touch of Floyd psychedelia, but it's like the trip is over, and the music sounds sober, yet with intense knowledge of a trip, and still remains beautiful. But it's like a gentler beauty that doesn't seem nearly as good as the Dark Side era.
