I was gonna dispute homicide but then I remembered someone died a couple feet away from my apartment door. Security cameras showed some teens driving around at 4am seeing who they could rob when they found a man. They followed him around the complex until they were able to get close enough to him to threaten and mug him. You can see them talking until the man gives them what they want. As they're walking back to the car the man tells them something causing them to turn around and shoot him (probably a taunt of sorts). The man runs away and he collapses by a wall face down. A while later our upstairs neighbor (a relative of his) opens their door and peeks down and sees him on the floor. Thinking he was drunk and passed out, they went to check on him and found out he was hurt. By then it was too late and he died at the hospital. That morning I woke up and my dad told me what happened. The blood was still there and later the relatives put a little blue cross in that place. The incident caused them and other neighbors around them to move away (turns out we had a large family living around us). In the security footage, everything, including the license plates, is visible though I never found out if they caught them. Most likely they did. This didn't seem like it was planned out. The teens were likely drunk or on drugs and thinking they could be tough did what they did. This happened in August

I moved down to Houston from New England 10 years ago. I loved it at first because it was new and exciting. There are advantages and disadvantages of living in any metro area in the world. But I have to say one that that has stayed consistently positive with Houston is its people. They are mostly friendly and genuinely nice for the most part. I can’t say that for the people in New England. The restaurants and service industry in Houston is like no other. I’ve been all over the world and it’s hard to compare. Yes, the heat/ humidity is ridiculous and the flooding issues are out of control along with poor roadways and erratic drivers. 😑 But, everything is up to the interpretation. Everyone is different. As for me though, I’ve enjoyed my time here but I plan on moving away in the next few years.

Good coverage. Grew up in Houston and must say the property taxes, crime, over-crowding, and weather issues (flooding!) are a huge concern. Really sad to see what happened to my city. Houston used to be a pretty cool "town". Now, over-crowding, traffic, and crime are real issues. I hesitate to tell anyone to move to H-town. Regardless, where ever I go, Houston will always hold a place in my heart. If I do leave, likely to just leave the country.

My whole family lives in Houston -- not me. You pretty much nailed it. The heat problem is really more about the combination of heat and stifling humidity. If you wear glasses, and walk outdoors from an air conditioned building, don't be surprised if your glasses fog up. It happens. The price of a house in the burbs is very low, compared to Dallas or Austin. Pollution is really bad in Southeast Houston, but in the wooded Northern burbs, it is not bad. Houston is definitely the center of the US oil industry -- for better and for worse. Lots of good food to be had in Houston!

Yup... I live in Kingwood (just north of Houston) and life is GREAT with the exception of the heat and humidity. The video also fails to mention the amount of parks Houston has, I can't remember the stats right now but we're in the top 5 if not number one. Plus the medical center, children's hospitals and cancer centers are top notch and the art culture continues to grow daily. Our gas prices have been well under $2 for like a year. Like you already mentioned the food and entertainment options here are INSANE. Just a few facts and opinions. Lol

I moved from El Paso to Houston, 4 years ago. Here are the things I don’t like 1. City planning, I don’t get the loop thing. 2. Humidity is so annoying in summer 3. Driving 30+ min to go anywhere 4. People drive so bad in here, limit is 60 but you have to go like 80 because people are just right behind you if you drive at normal speed.

Austin is the worst for driving, imo, because the highways are just not even remotely adequate for the number of people. And There are far too many places where you're going from a dead stop at a stop sign to boom on a feeder going up hill with just a hundred feet to get up to freeway speed. Houston can gave bad traffic but it's highways are at least adequate in most places. Of course, they're perpetually under major construction *somewhere*

Houston was my first city when I moved to the USA. Spent there 2 years. Everything pretty much true. Incomes are low and this city doesn't give you an alternative with public transportation like New York or Boston. So after your expenses on car, rent e.t.c. you'll not save much. Unless you have a really nice job or business. Without it I would not move there again

Lived in Houston 30 years. Was hit EIGHT times by other drivers while driving within the traffic laws... My wife and I were rear-ended TWICE in FIVE days in two different parts of the city. Finally woke up and moved 3 hours away and have never been happier. Saved nearly $1000 per month in living expenses when we moved and quality of life went up.

Not only is it hot, it's a very humid swamp a** HOT. It's like living in a swamp without actually living in a swamp! Electricity costs a lot during the summer months because of having to use AC. It FLOODS easily! If you move here and buy a home, make sure to look at the flood plain situation and purchase flood insurance (especially if you live south of I-10, but flooding can happen anywhere in town). I can't stress that enough. A lot of people got screwed during Hurricane Harvey. Also, in some areas, it doesn't take much to flood due to poor drainage etc (don't need anything as bombastic as a hurricane to cause problems). Too much traffic! LA may be worse, but we aren't too far behind and things are getting worse. If you live in the suburbs like the Woodlands, be prepared for a looooong commute to downtown or the Galleria. I would move outta here if I could, but I'm stuck here for various reasons.

YES, if you move to Houston, you need flood insurance. Regular homeowners insurance does not cover floods. If you have a mortgage, the bank will probably make you carry flood insurance. Besides, it is not that expensive.

I’ve lived in Houston all my life, I’m fairly young (21) so I don’t know much about taxes and all that but I can agree that we have terrible weather, air quality and overpopulating. Some pros are that housing is affordable and you can get a good house with $150,000 but prices are going up due to overpopulation and gentrification. We have a fun city night life (before COVID), have some of the best universities in the country, that’s all I can think of for now btw as soon as I’m able to I’m getting out of here and moving to Austin.

My folks lived in Houston. Mom warned my five kids about the fire ants. One didn't listen. She warned them about the pretty fuzzy caterpillars; they all listened after the fire ants. My dad told a story about a Shell picnic on the bayou. One kid jumped in the water (hot day) and was bitten by several water moccasins. Some folks lose their pets on the bayou to 'gators. It's very humid in Houston most of the time, and it's very hot at least half the year. Traffic is horrible on the major highways; I much preferred driving through neighborhoods. I was there around 1990. People were followed home from the grocery store and robbed of their Rolex watches in their driveways. Moved to Houston in 2012. Pay is subpar for my experience in the food industry and now, security. Living the greater east end, new townhomes are popping up all over. Causing the propety tax to increase. The same townhomes 4 years ago was around $115k, now they $300-$500k. The metro bus system is ok unless you live in the outer regions of the city, then have to drive. Homeless is indeed bad. Two mayors have tried and failed to adequately resolve this issue. I keep going but I have to go to my second job. Keep up the great work. Love the vids.

Lived here my entire 42 years on this earth. Hopefully not for too much longer (by moving, not ceasing to live). Been elsewhere for small periods; helped me realize how much hate it here. And for those who say “well, just move”. Not always that easy, especially with family and work concerns. Some thoughts: The reason why there are so many accidents? It’s because people drive like assholes. Everyone’s always in a hurry, seem to be allergic to using turn signals, and running red lights seems to be a competitive sport. Amen to the bugs. Weather is horrible. We have Summer, and Summer Jr. No autumn. You know how most places, during the fall, the leaves change colors spectacularly? Not here. One moment their green, then the leaves say “f*ck it , fam, I’m out” then die and turn gray. Pollution is horrible. The air quality is getting to the point where I can’t really breathe anymore outside. Everything looks the same; bland, boring, and ugly. Used to be homeless, actually. Thank God I was able to pull myself out of that. There is no real assistance if you fall into a hole; that’s true of most places , but made worse here due to decades of corrupt city management leading to budget issues. Amen to the crime.

Billy Castillo - I’m sorry you feel that way. I moved here in 05 from the Bay Area (Northern California) at 30 and I absolutely love everything about Houston and burbs. Yes the weather is warm/hot but I prefer the warmer weather, the traffic absolutely sucks and most ppl here are immune to using turn signals (blows my mind), they drive at or below the speed limit in the left lane while texting away, the property taxes are ridiculous, and we definitely have a mosquito infestation lol. Outside of those issues Houston is beautiful and very diverse. I live in Spring (north) and love everything abt where I live and gym. In my opinion it’s actually an attractive area but yes there are some crummy unattractive areas but that’s not most of Houston. To me there is zero comparison to California. I lived there 30 years of my life minus 3 when I was in the service and tbh when I visit family there I can’t get home to Houston fast enough. I’ve been all over the us between being in the service, driving 18 wheelers cross country, and working oilfield and I am always happy to return to Houston (home).. this is only my perspective

The people are friendly, the city is laid back and chill, and there are plenty of nice areas with affordable nice houses. It has the largest medical center in the world so if you are pursuing any career in the medical field then this is the city to go to. It is also a good place to raise a family and your money stretches further here than most big cities

My family lives in Houston and in swore off driving in that city back in 2000. Major highways have all cars speeding, bumper to bumper, cars shift quickly lane to lane without signals. The last time I visited my mother I left claw marks on her door from the fright of the insane traffic. Then there are the wide open highways that change direction of traffic based on time of day with no separation between the lanes going opposite directions at 80 mph. It can easily take hours to get from one part of the city to the other. When I was young some of my family lived in a part of Houston called Pasadena. Locals call it Stinkadena because the many many many factories and refineries make it smell so bad it takes days to get used to it after arriving to the area. Also it has flash flooding at the drop of a hat. It’s close enough by the ocean to get the humidity, but far enough away to avoid the seas breeze. The almost completely concrete composition of the city also intensified the already massive heat it gets. Last time I visited for a week it was over 100 degrees every day and the wind had no relief, it just felt like you were feeling hot vents directly from hell. Now I live in one of those Alaskan “cities” that shouldn’t be as big as they are. It’s so much nicer than Houston.

I’ve lived a total of 31 years in Houston and another nine in League City. Much of what you say is true, but I have to offer a few corrections. Houston was making great strides in solving homelessness, in fact virtually eliminating veteran homelessness, before Harvey thanks to private/faith based/ government partnerships. Harvey wiped out a good bit of housing, particularly low-income, and also wiped out many small businesses. That set us back several years. HISD is in the hole financially not for lack of revenue, but for spending too much. The whole school district is dysfunctional with the leadership at war with each other. The whole mess was almost taken over by the state pre-COVID. The school districts in the City of Houston that are in the other parts of the city (like Clear Creek ISD), the school districts in suburban cities, and the private schools are in good financial shape. In fact we have some absolutely outstanding private K-12 schools. BTW, I think you mean the Ship Channel and Galveston Bay, not Trinity Bay. Also, about 70% of the census tracts inside Beltway 8 (most of the city) have average incomes in the bottom 3rd of the nation. Only 20% in the top third. There is virtually no middle class anymore. Can't wait to leave when I retire in a couple of years!

It is not the best city out there,but it is still a huge & diverse city(i.e. diversity in choices of food/entertainment, etc.) with a booming economy(i.e.plenty of jobs) and low prices (especially house prices, this is a big plus).Within my own community(Vietnamese American community) Houston has been one of the hottest topics for quite a while now.Especially for Vietnamese immigrants we dont mind the humidity, coming from the tropical country(in fact in my own case I found California dry air hasnt been very good to my skin)

I live in Arlington and had a ton of in laws in Houston so I'm familiar. First Houston grew so fast to it's huge size because there were no real zoning laws. You could build anything next to anything...anywhere. The crime rate and people on assistance can be traced directly to Hurricane Katrina's blowing the trash from Louisiana to Houston. They never went back home. Louisiana didn't want them back. The tax rate here 6.25%. There is no State, County nor City tax taken from your paycheck. The 6.25 is paid at points of sale. A consumption tax that all share in to make it fair. The heat is fine by me. I will never live anywhere farther north than I am now.

Me, I'd pick Raleigh, N. C. 'cuz it's less humid, more of a stable area; it's more "traditional" people-wise; likely your future friends there might be a better socially (but Texas has that too). The main thing is that DFW is crowded and still growing, plus with things like traffic, the summer humidity, your commutes and pleasure driving would be only so-so. No. Carolina is less crowded, has hill and mountain areas that are beautiful, similar to the Arkansas/Missouri Ozark Mountains. Very green and lush there. DFW is also quite lush, with big lakes all around.

Coming from someone who’s from Houston and recently moved out here’s more reasons: 1. Once you leave the 610 Loop, Houston sucks hard if you’re a young single person. Yeah there’s some cool spots like City Centre but outside the 610 loop feels like this never ending sprawling Suburb. It’s ugly as hell too. 2. Cost of living is too damn high the in the loop and close to the loop. Houston knows all the young people want to live in the loop and as a result, rent in the 610 loop costs soooo much more than everywhere else in the city. 3. Gentrification is leading to excess amounts of homeless. The city of Houston loves its gentrification and as a result, people are being displaced all over the city. 4. City rivalries. This is more of a petty reason, but it’s something to be aware of. Dallas doesn’t like Houston because it’s flat, ugly, spread out and humid. Houston doesn’t like Dallas because they were told not to like it by other people.
