I love seeing all of these videos, so I can send them to my family who live back in SC. They still love to question why I decided to move up to NH, especially when I told them we got over 7 feet of snow this past winter in our yard. While it is a bit more expensive to live here in some aspects, it certainly beats living in the humid and hot summers down south.

I'm late to the party but wanted to comment. My wife and I moved to Southern NH in the mid 1970s from the Chicago area. As a result we are always been amused by complaints about the weather. NH has more snow but is warmer than the Chicago area. If you are going to live in a place with winter that seems to be a good tradeoff to me. Although over the last few years the weather has changed and now we have much less snow and more freezing rain - that makes life interesting. Property taxes vary a lot by town, they are highly dependent on the mix residential/commercial/industrial property. That being said the overall tax burden is lower than other states, but not nearly as low as some folks assume, but that also means NH is pretty miserly providing state benefits. All in all we are happy to live here and our two adult children continue to live in the state.

NH property taxes are deducted off your federal taxes. Sales tax is not federally deductible. Kind of genius and I live in NH.

Sales taxes can be federally deductible as well, but the record keeping is a nightmare. There is also the SALT cap to consider. The standard deduction amount is more favorable to most taxpayers.

NH's property taxes not only have a high millage rate, but NH also taxes 100% of assessed value (full market value) of the property - and real estate prices in NH are astronomical. I sold my standard colonial in Exeter, and retired to a 5,000sf riverfront showplace on 3 acres (with $100K left over), and my annual property tax went from $14K to $1,500. Arkansas only taxes 20% of the property's market value. Also, there's virtually NO BREAKS in NH property tax for a Homestead Exemption, or for the elderly or disabled. Unless you're a govt worker with a fat pension, you WILL be taxed out of your home in southern NH.

I am a homebody. The homebodies are the least likely to get bored. I would go outside there in the beautiful nature. I don't mind being places as long as there are no people. Yeah, so far the insane amount of snow and rusted out car is so far the only downfall of NH IMHO. Still gorgeous though. I love winter, the cold is fine, but that is A LOT of snow. Ugggg too many days of sunshine there. I am currently in Western Washington. I love the weather and beauty here, but people have ruined the entire state😢.

Ok lets compare to Southern California. Avg price of housing is $800k to $1 Mil, summer temps are around 100 degrees, graffiti cities, homelessness is growing, full of drugs and crime. There are twice as many people in Riverside Co than the entire state of NH. It takes me two hours to drive 40 miles home from work. I think NH is not really a place i’d call undesirable.

@@Teeveepicksures I live next door to Portsmouth and I think you're really exagerating. Unless you're within a mile of the homeless shelter you're very unlikely to see any homeless people. There's no neighborhoods in the whole state you need to worry about getting killed for walking down the wrong street. I will give you that yes there's drug issues in certain areas. And Nashua and Manchester aren't great places. But unlike CA there's nowhere that's just plain unsafe to be.

Well, I suppose the state still needs funding to assist with its responsibility of course and property tax is perhaps the most ethical tax as no one created the land and thus it belongs to everyone you are not taxing the people for the value created on products or selling those products but mainly only taxing them for their usage of the land (effectively like a lease for that which is owned by everyone theoretically). That's just my guess though, from this perspective it still seems to work fairly well with more like libertarian principles and ethics as supposed to other taxes.

Property taxes vary a lot in New Hampshire. The popular lakes region counties have considerably lower property taxes then the average rate in New Hampshire. If you retire in the state and winter in the South, as we do 4 months a year to see the children and grandchildren; the winter is a non-event. You do need to be smart where you live though as coastal and river flooding are real and will likely get worse in the coming decades.

High property tax is often true and in NH, YOU control how it is spent locally. On voting day each local spending proposal is explained and it states how much it will add to your property tax. You and your neighbors decide how much your tax will be and where to spend your money. Is that a negative? You think it is better to have a sales tax and income tax and let distant politicians decide where your money goes?

The weather in NH just plain sucks! I call NH the Seattle of the east coast. Over the past several 2021 through 2023 years when winter finally ends after 6 months of snow being on the ground, out comes the mud and the bugs.(black flies, mosquitoes, ticks etc.) then the rain, grey overcast days and WMUR channel 9 weather reports most used word…. Unsettled. in 2022 NH had 100 sunny ☀️ days and 10 out of 13 summer weekends it rained on Saturday or Sunday. We don’t have powerful/many earthquakes or tornadoes but several severe snow storms, lots of powerful thunderstorms and hurricanes from time to time. A lot of these storms knock out power lines sometimes for days. Owning your own home in rural NH a generator/back up emergency power is a must. The great ice storm of 2008 personally out of power for 10 days. If you’re thinking of moving/having a family in NH it’s very expensive to purchase a home and property taxes are crazy high! The population is just getting older and older bc it’s expensive to live here. No young adults are moving or staying in NH, so enjoy driving and shopping behind the “blue hairs and Q-tips”. I lived 4 decades all over southern NH and I can’t wait to get the HELL out of here!

Restaurants in my area are horrible. Even the sea food I am told is frozen from a can. The options are very limited with lots of bad pizza places. No great sandwich spots. Haven't seen a Chinese restaurant while up here. Not even a chain restaurant like the 99 or Olive Garden. You need a vehicle to shop for food or visit a Pharmacy. The closest Market is 2.1 miles away, The bank is not downtown, not even a BOA ATM in the center. Must have a car for fast food . It's sad when the best burger is made by the super market. Boring is true especially come cold weather because pretty much the only activity around here if you don't join a gym is walking . You want to limit driving in winter because of the salt on the roads that will turn your vehicle to a rust bucket after a couple of seasons. It's like that in all the New England towns , same with upper New York . We can put a man on the moon but can't figure out how to make roads safe and not rust out a 50 thousand dollar Tesla that the regime is pushing on us. The best thing about NH in the small towns is that they have not seen the crime other places get.
