Why i am slowing down in the hobby (which is one step away from leaving) 1. The expense. 2. The space of both the statues and the boxes. 3. The wait time from pre_order to shipping. 4. On the day of delivery, the waiting around for the courier to show up. 5. Anxiety factor - will the piece be broken? will the piece look as good as the prototype? 6. News. Keeping up with statue news, statue chats (KZbin) statue forums etc. A time eater!!! Something you failed to mention - i think there is possibly collectors out there that do not watch KZbin statue channels, or visit Statue forums, or post photo's of their pieces. Those collectors are probably content.

Do you know what would be a great thing for a statue company to do? Sell boxes, so you can just throw away all the boxes, then if you want to sell the statue just order a new box for it.

I haven't bought a statue for 2 years now, because of the crazy price hikes, and the inflation. When I came to this hobby, I bought PFs for 400usd max, now it's like 650 to 800usd. When there's something new that I want, I just trade for it now. Over the years of collecting having a room full of overcrowded statues makes it less appealing to my eyes, I curated them and spaced them like a museum which made it like a sophisticated art piece, then everything else I kept in the box for either rotation or trading.

I’m involved in another collectible hobby (model horses) and have collected for 20+ years. The biggest thing for me is the mental capacity it can take to owning so many things. It can be overwhelming. I also see a lot of compulsive buying in my hobby by people that don’t necessarily have the resources to do so but feel like they have to keep up. It can be very unhealthy. So many people end up buying things and then the models live shoved in a closet and forgotten about because they physically have no more room in their home.

As a collector going on over a decade, I found that what's been super effective for me is limiting the space I allow for my statues (arcades as well). That space has grown over the years, but I'm mostly capped at one room and 7 racks of shelving. That translates to roughly 42 pieces (less once you factor in pieces with a huge foot print). So I always have to like new stuff enough to go through the trouble of selling to create space. And with how much of a pain selling and storage is, it prevents me from making silly fomo purchases. So I typically buy 5ish new pieces per year that are upgrades and then another 5ish pieces that just happen to be irresistibly good deals or cool impulse purchases (Spawn 🤣). That keeps my space churn at like 25% of my collection per year which is manageable. I'd like to get that total churn down to about 5ish pieces per year though and halve that time commitment. Also keeps the wife happy because I'm not taking over the house and because of that forced churn I'm only spending 20-30% of new statue cost in new money invested. Forced limitation also makes cleaning and maintenance WAY easier. Doesn't seem like you are getting out entirely though. What's the total piece count you are shooting for maintaining once you downsize?

@@TheXtremeChannelMrX that’s a solid goal. Especially if the hobby doesn’t bring you joy anymore. For me I still love staring at and tinkering with my medium sized collection. And the pieces I’ve curated I can stare at for hours. If 10 pieces could still do that for me, I’d downsize for sure.

For me, it's the space and prices. I have a certain amount of space I'm willing to commit to the hobby. Price increases have made it easier to begin walking away from the hobby. I wouldn't be surprised if the prices kill the hobby at some point.

My number 1 isn't on your list, but that the characters and franchises I have been collecting as statues for decades now have been modernized/re-booted and I find myself with thousands of $s spent on statues of characters I no longer like, and Im too lazy and worried to re-pack and resell. As one example, where Im sitting now Im surrounded by old He-Man and Transformers statues, and I have fallen out of love with both since the Kevin Smith and Michael Bay re-boots and the Mattel and Hasbro campaigns behind them. Boxes would be my number 2 though. Some company should scan these boxes and the foam inserts and make new ones to sell on-demand, or something.

Great topic, Mr.X. I started this hobby because of nostalgia; it is great to have a physical representation of a childhood character in a tv show or movie that I use to watch. I have most of those statues now that represent that so interesting in this hobby is low for new stuff. Price and space has been another issue especially now with statues being more costly than before and I live in a smaller house. I made the tough decision to throw away all my boxes (really had to due to smaller house) and haven’t looked back. I figure if I sell something I’ll just disclose that it has no original box and buyer will either want it that way or not, I’ll lose a little bit of money on it or not but if I’m selling it that means the attachment/nostalgia of it is gone so money loss won’t be a big impact for me. As it stands now I am going through a bum life change so I may just sell most of my collection and be just an admirer of the hobby through your channel and other KZbinrs. I still will make videos of what I have left and other stuff, of course. It’s been a fun rollercoaster of a ride being in this hobby, fun, indeed! 🖖 & 🤘 Max Power

Since the start of pandemic, I got interested in anime figures/transformers/indoor plants and I bought like crazy on eBay due to the lockdowns that prevented me from going out at that time. Thankfully, I still have a job during the pandemic, where I get to work from home as a call-centre agent. Now, 2 years have past, I felt like I have "waken" myself from this dream-world of collecting. I currently got myself into debt - not from my hobby, but from expenses which I forgot to factor in ie. car repairs, dental work, and glasses. When I was buying things, I lost focused on my actual goals. My real goals are: 1) pay off my student loan and 2) buy a house and live with my mother and my younger sister and adopt a pet. I felt kind of bad that 3 years of working so hard in a job that I don't even like and gives me constant anxiety all the time, and have no savings left. It will take me another 2 months to pay off my existing credit cards debt, and then I will need to tackle the student loan. I do love my collections I have so far, but I also need to remind myself not to be carried away with it because you don't know what life will throw at you.

I agree with you 💯. Since a kid I always like collecting and just recently got into the big leagues i.e. XM customs sideshow etc last year. And in that year I've spent more than 16k on pieces when I should've been putting that money away for a home or other life changes that recently happened that I now need that money and I don't have it. Hobbies like this is no different than gambling or drugs. It's fun until it sucks you in😢

Almost all of those reasons are valid and apply to me However one big reason has to be time. The time I spend just searching for statues, looking at statues, researching statues etc takes up so much of my time, it's almost all I ever do now in my free time apart from work and family. As a father of four it is very draining and taxing on the personal life. And I'm not in denial, I can see how much time and effort I put into This hobby but haven't quite been able to break out as I still enjoy it. But I am starting to feel drained, financially and again just with effort and energy. Great video as always and you've nailed every point

I bought something from someone the other day and he said he was simply bored of it now. When you lose the excitement for it then there is no turning back. You can always justify a purchase despite the reasons you stated ( even if you are deluding yourself) if you still have joy for it. If not, then nothing will justify you continuing.

I've commented this before, but 20 years ago, I had a massive resin garage kit collection. 100 I built and painted and about 400 unbuilt in boxes. I eventually got overwhelmed one day and sold them all. 10 years later I did a repeat, but this time it was Sideshow statues, and again I got overwhelmed with the sheer amount and space they took up and sold them as well. There is no way I could do it nowadays with these things being in the price ranges of $1,000, $2,000, $3,000 + for 1 statue which is just insulting really. Now I have just a hand full of small scale figures, busts and resin prints. The itch never goes away, it just needs to be tamed.

100% agree with your top 10 reasons ( Personally been through all those 10 reasons before as i had been a collector for the past 18years). But recently i discovered ONE OF MOST IMPORTANT reason that make me quit or like you said just disappeared from the collectibles communities is the 'SUPPORT'. Family support ( whether kids or spouse ) that have the same passion as you are important. If not, you will feel very lonely and empty with all those collectibles by yourself with no one to share with !

I only recently started collecting again, back in my teenage years I had a lot of action figures from video game collector editions. I'm finally in a place where I have room to dive into collecting again. The boxes are definitely off-putting, and I'm also noticing the constant-upgrade-available mode. I've had crazy ideas in the past for collection routes, but for now I've limited myself to my favourite characters, being Iron Man and Venom, and some of their main side characters (e.g. MK49 Rescue Suit, Carnage) and I'll be limiting myself to only a few statues a year. It does help that my girlfriend is really into all the items I have (pre)ordered, so half our living room will be displaying statues & Lego sets (yeah we build together). The thing that may push me out eventually are the ever increasing shipping & import costs. In some cases it ends up being 50% or more of my total amount paid for a new collectible.

You forgot 1 reason, which is they got all the statues they wanted :d. In my case when I started I had a clear thought of which characters I wanted in high quality form as decoration for my space. Now that I have all the characters, I'm done. There have been new releases of those characters which are objectively better in some cases. But it doesn't change the love I have for the initial statue, so I never change statues either.

I ask myself the same questions in each collecting hobby I have. Does this item have a personal or sentimental meaning to me? Do I genuinely like it for what it is and not because of popularity? Will I actually use it/play it/look at/enjoy it? If it checks all those boxes it's a definite purchase for me. If anything I ever have ends up not meeting those standards anymore I tend to sell it.

insightful list 👀that applies to collecting (statues, toys, comics etc.) I've seen more creators in this space just slow down or leave. There's a number of videos out addressing stress, budgeting and mental health all connected to collecting. To ensure this hobby stays fun for me, I work really hard to follow my own rules. Once I buy a statue of a character, I don't care if something better comes along, I made my decision and it's on display. I limit myself to not just something that looks cool, but I need to have a connection to my childhood. Plus, everything must be displayed so once space is taken, it's not changing. There's still that urge to pick up new stuff that breaks my rules so for that I search KZbin to watch someone else enjoy it. I hope every collector finds their balance to continue enjoying this hobby.

Yes this 1000 times. I bought a Voxellab Proxima for $150 and the prints look amazing. $10 worth of resin and a nominal fee for paint and brushes and I can pump out a 1/6 statue in no time. I sculpt these myself and even though they are paperlight hollowed out statues that I fill with bean or rocks to give them weight they are still a value that does not require the outrageous shipping fees and costs of something that is labeled as a PF just because they say it is. It also seems like the few sculptors that get work are doing the same characters over and over again. Spider-man, Wolverine, Batman Harley Quinn and Venom. I have a FB group where I am doing all the characters from the Justice League Unlimited Cartoon and will have these available for purchase as STL files for pretty cheap. I wanted to give some love to the characters that have been neglected over the years. Granted no one is asking for a Bwanna Beast statue but there might be 5 people in the world that want that statue.

Pretty much all of the reasons you listed. I recently moved, and it was such a pain (literally) moving the statues on and off the truck. They take up too much space. Don't even need the box, and it's just so you can get almost what you paid for back if you decide to resell along the way. Also, you pay a lot of money for preorders and then the prototypes don't match the end result, or there's a QC issue where the leg peg doesn't peg in properly (looking at you Sideshow on these). Then, there's the long lead time for orders. I preordered a statue day 1 from a site and still haven't received it while others received theirs 8 months ago. I get it that some people buy direct from the company, but if other distributors have had theirs in stock for months now, why doesn't the one I bought from have theirs yet??? I shifted focus on my collection to comics for now. They take up much less room.

I've noticed this happening in many collector circles. I see it happening with X-Plus collectors and now with 1/6 scale collectors. For me, my collections just got too big. And when that happened, I only "saw" the collection as a whole. I stopped caring about every individual piece. Or, at least, it was hard to appreciate each individual piece. Then came the famous lack of space issue, the box storage issue, and you just kind of get all around used to the collection. At that point, you wonder how much longer they would hold their value and then you spend more time wondering about that than actually appreciating what you have. Another thing (and you touched on this). The community which existed when you start collecting often gets thinned out. Old favorites disappear, new people come in who aren't on par with those original collectors, and ... it's all just different.

Honestly I've been a collector my whole life of many different things I recently got into statues probably been about 3 years now so I'm what you call fairly new I find it kind of ironic that's the reason why I started collecting what's because of this channel LOL I have to say if I wanted to stop which I don't would have to say the money the boxes and my wife need I say more

Addiction is real problem with this hobby. But The companies using it without any shame to take more money than necessary is The worst. The latest Predator price from P1 is the starting point of me wanting to leave the hobby. Clearly, this piece is The most simple Of The The line, having very very basics switchouts for a deluxe and yet, he might be The most expensive 1:3 i’ve ever seen. People hype things Way too much and because Of that, im afraid it will become The new standard for statues. Plus, people are giving very little attention to more honest compagnies / plateforms and I dont like this toxic dynamic. I’m waiting to see The Underworld line from PCS. They’ve been killing it lately with quality product & good prices. The success Of this line will determine if i stay In The hobby for a bit or not.

I just started and already filled up the man cave. Hobby fit right into an area I had reserved money for. Take Mr universe and sprinkle in a bunch of statues in all the cracks. That’s my lab. The space issue has hit hard and I stay off eBay. But maybe I’ll check one more time…..

The biggest reason is I’m tired of excitedly preordering something and two years later the statue company is like here you go! Hope nothing changed in your life!

All of your points very valid. I’m someone who would LOVE to get into statues. (Not literally, I’m not some kind of pervert.) But the price is usually very high so I have to really think about can I gather the money and is it really worth my energy and stress. The boxes are another aspect of this hobby that worries me and I don’t even have a statue. However, I would really love to have some really cool statues.

We had a polar vortex ice storm earlier this year with frosted tree limbs falling left and right. There was a small chance some could have just randomly smashed through a window or two of the collection rooms and had nature permeate the pieces as I struggle to rescue them to a safe room without electricity - "ok, I get it universe, time to quit" - I call insurance: "yes, god destroyed my assets"

I think companies are misreading the market. There have been several pieces in recent years that have been released that I would have definitely bought day one if they weren't one third scale. It's actually giving my wallet a break because every time I want to pull the trigger the scale size prevents it. 1/3 and larger is just too big and as collectors now years into the hobby we're starting to run out of space. At least I am. I'm at the point now where I would rather dedicate the space to one to three statues instead of just one big one. Large scale statues are great for those who have the space and wallet, but offer a smaller size for those who prefer it and I bet sales go go up.

Biggest two issues are storing the boxes, but more recently - the shipping costs are insane, especially since I’ve moved to the east coast. There’s also the problem of licensed companies doing the same handful of characters over and over and over again. It just winds up in a situation where you can either keep replacing the same characters constantly, or wait forever for somebody to do the character youve been waiting for and hope it looks good

I agree you shouldn’t look at buying as an investment, even if you have something worth a lot it doesn’t mean you have a buyer for it, but yes I’m super selective with my pieces because I don’t have endless disposable income lol, I just want the whole nights metal line, I just need red death and the 1/3 prime 1 Batman who laughs but can’t quite afford yet.

I think the last thing you said, just being tired. It takes a lot of time and energy (for me) sometimes. Meaning that always looking to see what prices are, just in case I want to re sell so I can purchase another statue that I am excited for. It never ends it feels.

Money is definitely the number one reason why I would get out. I love the 1/4 scale statues however that's why a majority of mine are 1/10th because of expense and size .

Many of the reasons on this list are why I'm also working towards retiring from the statue game. But mostly I'm running out of space (display and box storage), increased prices (MSRP and shipping), and characters I'd like to add aren't being made (licensed or custom).

Solid points on collectibles. One that doesn’t get mentioned is how the companies that own the brand (DC, Marvel) will say or support distasteful things, making you not want to buy any of their products

My reason is completely different, I collected Batman statues for 30 years but it just isn't the same anymore. 3. Expense. 2. Endless. 1. Preorder mentality
Statues I would NEVER sell!
