Totally agree with the host. I’ve been making a kick ass living for 26 years and I love every day of it. I honestly don’t feel like i work a day of my life. People appreciate what plumbers can do and I enjoy being a hero every day. I have also made lifelong friends through my trade. It’s not glamorous and it’s not pretty at times but I’m sooooo very glad I stumbled across this trade. Good luck. Work hard and learn from the experienced guys. The first six months or so are the tough times. You will want to quit and you will be tired. Then, things will click and off you go.

Looking to apply to my local union soon. Part of the application is to write a mechanical aptitude test. So I called and asked if they give any recommendations about preparing for the test. They told me it's 100 questions and 40 of them are basic math, (adding, subtracting, percentages) some of the other questions are about recognizing tools and he said if I have any mechanical background it's a pretty easy test. I have taken some different college math courses and have done well so I have pretty good math skills but I definitely could use some brushing up. Just wondering if anyone could give more advice on what things I should be studying to do well?

I am 35; a service plumber, and have been doing it about 5 year's now. I have always been mechanically inclined and picked up quickly. Being a hard worker and putting in the time on your own time to work on being better in your trade helps immensely. I did small arms and artillery repair in the military, and worked with my hands most of my life leading up to it. I fell into plumbing; which most people do. I got into this trade late in life at 30, but as long as you're a hard worker and use common sense you can move ahead in a timely manner. One of the drawbacks at least in service is you're done with the job is done, so your schedule is unpredictable, so it's hard to make plans.
@RogerWakefield

Christopher I completely agree. Here is a link to the UPC Study Guide amzn.to/2RgYEn5. I recommend to start studying as soon as you get into your apprenticeship. I have a video where I tell you how I use it to study. Thanks for commenting!

I have a top 40 list to why not become a plumber. I think in Texas you need to be licensed just to work under somebody. Something like that kept me from taking a job there years ago. But In my state you only need it to contract Or run a business. I’ve been a licensed p1 for a while now. I think in Texas they will honor an out of state license if you carried a minimum of 2 years. Idk. But If my kids ever said that they want to be plumber like me I’d whip that ass. And make them a human back hoe during the summer ! it’s an underrated thankless skill ! But you can make a living. Anybody that says they don’t feel like they’re working are probably not exposed to many different situations or get around much. most of it’s hard work. Most people will fix their easy stuff before they pay someone $100 bucks to crank a truck up. And we don’t stop because it’s 100 degrees outside or 20 degrees and you can’t feel your toes. And if want to run a business because you think that it’s easy. Then be ready to not get any rest at quitting time . Be ready to pay for people that steal and break your stuff. And also be ready to never get any work at all at times. It’s Feast or famine in today’s economy. So be careful who you listen to. It’s a long way to the top of you want to rock and roll.

I'm a plumber and an electrician. Started as a plumber but since today there is a lot of electronics and automation I went to school to also learn how to work as an electrician. It did very well for me because I can build intelligent central heating systems more advanced than every plumber and electrician for that matter i know. Having both trades made me the highest earner in the company ( 2nd to my boss of course) and i get to do only the more cool, interesting and complicated staff. My advice for someone who wants to get into the trade is this, yes you can earn amazing money but you also have to be amazing at it. That only comes with experience, constant learning, hard work and a good amount of intelligence. Most plumbers i know earn good money but not amazing. It's sometimes a fiscally hard job, sometimes work conditions are hard but you are going to have so much satisfaction, plumber ( trade people in general) are awesome to work with and there is never a boring day, you do everyday something different and you are going to work in different places, with different people for different people. As you can probably understand i love this job

I started making 100 a day as an apprentice working very hard,getting dirty and sometimes feeling like I had to work harder than what I was getting paid for. Now I am happy I gave it my all with pride in my work and now I make VERY good money to not brag. Don't feel embarrassed, just work hard and keep your head up. When I see people dressed nice and clean and start feeling down I just remind myself that I made their monthly paycheck in a couple days if not in just 1. Highly recommend this to anyone who is going or about to finish highschool.

I work 10 hours a day without getting tired. Ive gotten straight As in school. I've done irrigation and house repairs (self taught) and been thinking of doing plumbing as a profession as a apprentice. I love manual labor, love making money. But I'm a bit nervous going into it. Only real way of me getting hired or trained is by union here in florida...nobody will hire me as a apprentice (maybe roto rooter?) With no "real" experience. Sll my experience is all under the table so I have no proof of skills. So I'm wondering what my next course of action should be. I'd like to be a master plumber but dont wanna do a trade school. Thinking I should do the union way if possible. Once I'm liscenced I could probably go with other companies. Idk though. Big step.

My ex girlfriend cheated on me with a plumber , got off work and found him at the house “laying down the pipe” on her. Apparently he used his skill sets to get laid, so I ended up laying his ass out, tough times , but that’s life. Sometimes these women ain’t worth shit, and neither is the guy. He saw our photos on the walls, and he seen me and the kids photos everywhere. Thank god I didn’t just shoot em that day. Good raw strength and real good swing to that tender spot and he was out like a light .

Is plumbing a hard trade to learn ? My memory isn’t great and if there too many steps to memorize (over 8)I wouldn’t be able to do it . Many employers want employees to catch on fast and learn fast. If it’s technical and complex trade I might not able to succeed in it If not plumbing which trade would you recommend

Jan H plumbing is relatively simple. There are things to remember but after doing it a few times it all makes sense. HAve you thought about getting into the union? The #UnitedAssociation has a good training program. They will take time to teach you too.

I've worked in Logistics for the last 5 years. Mainly handle organizational stuff, but have started to really feel a sense of burnout and lack of pride in my work. I don't have any knowledge of tools, but I also am not afraid to get dirty (spend a lot of time crawling through/under dusty old racks to retrieve missing product for inventory counts). Would this be a good fit? I'm also 28, if that matters.

I am here because I start my job tomorrow as a plumbing apprentice I'm 23, I had my doubts if it was a good path to take thanks for the great video and motivation. They said most of my work would be snaking drains, 2 weeks training with someone then I am on my own, am I getting tossed around here? Is snaking drains really considered being a plumber? I know you have to start somewhere. I just don't want to be snaking drains for the rest of my career, I want more complicated tasks. Also getting paid on commission is that normal?

@RogerWakefield
@RogerWakefield 5 жыл бұрын
@Eric Robbins it's not too late. You can still get in and learn a great career. If you focus, work hard, and learn well you have time to become a great plumber. Why do you think it might be too late?
@ericrobbins9399
@ericrobbins9399 5 жыл бұрын
Why I thought it was too late, I felt plumbing was a physical demanding job. For thee years I worked part time at FedEx ground (side hustle) loading 400 packages per hour in a semi trailer. I did this to save, so I could visit Alaska and Hawaii. Before I turned 40 I could keep up with 18 and 21 year olds, but not now. I believe that people started becoming plumbers when they are young (in their 20's). I wanted to share that my grandfather was a master plumber. We have blue prints in my parent's basement which may be to the Greenbrier underground tunnel. My grandfather never spoke of this with the family other than he was working in that area. Kept it secret to his grave. He died when I was a year and a half old. Wish I could have learned from him.
@RogerWakefield
@RogerWakefield 5 жыл бұрын
Eric Robbins it may be tough for a while but I would be willing to bet that you can handle it. It’s not always hard work. You may have to lift a water heater every now and then but not much more to it than that. I always teach my apprentices to work smarter not harder. Are you in good shape? I don’t mean 18-21 year old shape just good grown man shape? If so you will be fine!!! That’s cool about your grandfather also. I love stuff like that.

What's amusing, myself service plumber since 1994, also approx 8-other plumbers I didn't know personally, were at Ferguson supply house in summer 2020/virus arrival. Instantly being a essential, listed withjn very top list within fully approved to continue working, virus or not. Post virus only, prior to virus we were considered semi-importance. Corona virus is moderate virus, compared to the very real risk we take daily, hepititus within all 3-types, we have been within close contact for multitudes within calendars, most recent virus arrival, essential importance yesterday placement. When if look back within mentioned day in time, never heard wording essential, and-or considered essential, within any professional supply house, within any residential, commercial, service call, also within 2 very large, if not largest regions in entire state. Not to mention hepititus is only one very real aspect, there are more as well, none were considered dangerous. Typical people, only change post an arrival within safety, and-or to late, sealed fate example. Then, and only then, a worded expression appears, also we are hereby walking importance within keeping viruses controlled. Like we just began. Pretty sure hepititus has been living much longer than corona virus in other words. Along with the many others, for most part qualified doctors/nurses surely do know towards.

And I do not want to be a damn salesman. I don't care anything about selling the job I just want to make between 120 and 150,000 a year or more if it's possible as a plumber not as a Salesman and not as a manager or any other field

Plumbing fascinates me, its one of the only things ive found that gets me excited to get out of bed in the morning, i know there will be crap days that suck, but thats kind of what i like about it. If you just accept that some days are going to be frustrating you will enjoy your days much better, i am 22 and i dropped out of highschool, im going to get my GED and then go be a plumbing apprentice and im excited to go places. My ultimate goal is to run a non profit that has people licensed in trades and EMT training to go out to places where natural disasters hit and my people can help fix houses and potentially save lives by using their medical training! Also my best friend is a journeyman Electrician who has wanted me to get on with him, all i tell him is you cant wash away a bad shock.
