Which one? Kurt, the QB or Curt the RB? Curt Warner the RB should be on this list. Had more yards on fewer carries than AD his rookie season. AD is listed 10th. AFC offensive rookie of the year, 1600+ yds- Curt Warner, 3rd pick after Elway and Dickerson, everybody forgets him. He was sweetness before sweetness was sweetness. Pretty sure he had more YFS than Dickerson in 83. Bad astroturf killed the careers of a shitload of players, Curt Warner among them.

I agree. It's not at all consistent to say that a QB who was a practice squad QB in 1994 and went to NFL Europe and the Indoor Football League from 1995-1997 should count as a "rookie" in 1998

What really stinks is how Randy Moss’s phenomenal rookie season in ‘98 overshadowed what Fred Taylor was doing as a rookie in the same season. A lot of people don’t realize that it was honestly a neck and neck race for offensive rookie of the year for a majority of that season, and Moss just pulled away over the last couple of games.
@johnselwitz5362
@johnselwitz5362 3 жыл бұрын
Randy Moss was phenomenal in his rookie season, but I think LT should’ve been number one. Moss got drafted by a Vikings team that was already pretty good, making the playoffs 5 of the previous 6 seasons, whereas Taylor went to a Giants team that was terrible for nearly two decades, missing the postseason for 17 consecutive seasons, and LT pretty much single-handedly made them relevant again by helping the Giants make the playoffs his rookie year, winning Defensive MVP and Defensive Rookie of the Year in the same season. Players like that come around once in a generation, if that, and typically they’re offensive players. He’s the greatest linebacker to ever play the sport, while I think Moss is the third best receiver ever behind Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison.

I should note the other rookies to lead their teams to Championships were Arnie Herber (1930, backed up in 1931) and Otto Graham (1946, backed up in 1947-1950). Also, prior to Bob Waterfield's arrival, the Rams had gone into recess in 1943 due to an exodus of players and team personnel to military service, and were a very poor team (one .500 season in seven years, and .338 in franchise history). As of 2021, no rookie QB has won, much less played in, the Super Bowl.

Rothlesberger played as a freshman and sophomore for my team's arch-rival, the Cory-Rawson Hornets. A single A (small school). His junior year, he transferred to a new school 10 miles north to the Findlay Trojans. A triple A school. NOT TO BE THE QB BUT AS A WR. The coach's kid was the starting QB. Big Ben started at QB as a senior and set all kinds of state records. Truth be told, he played only one year in high school as a QB. At Miami (of Ohio), he played for five years.

@Harry Engel I could not disagree more. Most running backs never even produce the numbers or success Eric had as a rookie in there 5th year. He was the sole focus of the offense for the 5 years he was with the Rams, colts included. Randy is playing wide receiver, in a offense where it is easy to generate those stats. Eric had over 2000 yards from scrimmage and ran for 100 against Dallas in the playoffs. The Vikings were a decent team before Moss arrived, not super bowl contenders, but were good enough to make the playoffs. How many receivers now are putting up Randy's number? Take away Moss, the Vikings still make the playoffs, take away Eric, I don't know if the Rams even finish 8-8. Eric's records still stand to this day.

@@Ravens-Nation-34 Moss made a bigger impact. There was never a receiver with his combination of size, speed hands and jumping ability. He re-invented the bomb. The Packers drafted 3 cornerbacks because Moss killed them that year.

Sean P yes, and their career lifespan is shorter, but they see most of the hits coming. Receivers don’t see a lot of hits coming & can’t brace themselves for the hit like running backs can. Anyone who has played football will tell you that it’s the ones you don’t see that are worse.

@@Ravens-Nation-34 Dude how can you say what Moss did that year was easy compared to Eric's season, he literally could burn you deep any given play and if it weren't for a missed 39 yard field goal the Vikings would've been in the super bowl. That was the best season the Vikings ever had and it was their best shot at winning a super bowl. No receiver can just come in and catch 17 tds. I even think it was his best season as a Viking and there have not been any receivers that have put up those kinds of stats and had that big of an impact in their rookie season

I respect Curt Warners inclusion on the list. If you put a team on the national map by not only going to the playoffs, but taking the team through upsets to hit the conference championship game? That team had a capable QB and the greatest WR at the time in Steve Largent. Curt Warner turned them from a special teams/aerial show in which they pulled games out of their *** in some way into a team that could and would want to run over opponents till they cried uncle. Chuck Knox may have not won a SB iirc but the guy was a fantastic coach who made good football teams. If he could run it 50 times a game he'd want 60. I mean that was the type of demand he asked out of his players in terms of physicality on offense and it showed in every team he ran. It's a shame he's forgotten, because I think modern Seattle fans will always remember the centerpiece that was Marshawn Lynch for their SB teams. But he probably deserves that same reverence as the man who did it first in the Emerald City.

The team winning all those games and starting 14-0 as the starter is why he made this list at all. The measurement is player output, aka their stats, and team performance. If you notice the lower slots are players where one of the measurements is too good to leave them off but the other measurement is fairly mediocre. AP was at 10 because while his stats were absurd the team was 8-8. Ben is low on the list because the team measurement was outstanding but his personal production was mediocre but people will argue it’s more than it was because of how the team performed. His season maxed out the scale on one measurement and was middle of the road on the other, thus he was on the list but lower on the list. The Steelers won a ton of games which is why the season is seen as so great on his part but if you left everything the same but the team was 10-6 and you genuinely measured how good he was as a rookie with more of a focus on his personal production that doesn’t fall back on the team record suddenly things would change. He would be at the top if he had strong numbers, the team was scoring a bunch of points and he was carrying them to a chunk of the wins. But in the 13 starts in the season he threw for less than 200 yards in 9 of them. The team scored less than 20 points in 5 games. They’re not going to rank a season that was primarily successfully managing games resulting in a lot of wins at the very top when there are other seasons where not only did a players team win a lot of games but they also had top production and a huge impact. Even your argument for why he should’ve been higher acknowledges that he was managing those games when you say that a bunch of other guys had similar set ups but caused their teams to lose. Ben’s success was that he carried out what he was told to do effectively and didn’t cost the team games when they were winning. And then when they did lose it was because he threw three picks. He stepped up for sure but based on their scale he’s properly placed.

As an update I would nominate Justin Herbert's rookie season as truly remarkable. He broke numerous records as a rookie, but it was the circumstances under which it occurred that season which make it so memorable. Because of the pandemic there were no pre-season games for Herbert to get his feet wet. He didn't even start or play in the opening game of the season where fans were not admitted. Then, in the second game the most unlikely of scenarios occurs. While standing on the sidelines and cheering on the kickoff return team, Herbert is told he's going in after the opening kickoff! While trying to inject a painkiller into the starting QB's ribs the team doctor had accidentally punctured a lung so now the starter was on his way to the hospitable and Herbert was on his way to stardom. With 11 guys already on the list I don't know who you would kick off, though. They're all so deserving.

Herbert is overrated and NFL defenses already have him figured out, only 3 years into his career. When the Jaguars defense of all teams can shut him down, you know he’s a bust. Also allowed the largest comeback in NFL history.

@@djLagwayEnjoyer Last time I looked Herbert didn't play on defense. For a bust, he's going to sign a fat contract soon. For a bust, he was second in yards passing last season only to Mahomes. Herbert's lack of success is directly related to the Chargers' defense, the offensive coordinator, and the head coach.

Matt Ryan was brilliant that season but he also had an All-Pro running back in Michael Turner to hand the ball off to if things got too difficult in the passing game. They both complimented each other very nicely.

You never know with gossip... it is poison. Many years ago, I hung out with a Cleveland and Pittsburgh crowd. They said the same thing. In college, he partied hard and the NFL teams heard about it and thought he might burn out. Cocaine was always central to the story. The draft is a crapshoot. Gossip might save you, and it might doom you. In 1983 the culture thought drug use was a terminal affliction. Yes, Ryan Leaf. No, Dan Marino. who knows?
