Sjono ... in real life there would be no items to buy because the store would have been looted, so items would be hard to come by and would be expensive in the real world too as you would likely have to buy them in the black market, as there would be a few groups trying to horde all the items for survival for themselves. ... so just imagine the shop in an rpg is the black market after they have looted elsewhere and it may feel more realistic of why they charge so much. lol

There's room for way more clichés. -- The orphan Hero. To be a hero, it's almost a requirement to have dead parents. -- The magical Healing Bed. You have 3rd degree burns, posonned by cyanide, AND have your guts poking out of your slashed belly? No problem, just go to sleep. You'll be perfectly fine! -- Cant... pass... that... knee-high fence... -- Rebel prince or princess with an attitude. -- The vilain who want to conquer/destroy the world... just because. -- The advisor was the real villain all along! -- Monsters have wallets and backpacks filled with random stuff. -- Overpowered adversary become a wimp once he join your team. -- And more!

Le Kanraposte Here's another one for ya, antagonist is made to look all powerful throughout the whole game and actually ends up being piss easy to defeat. *Cough* Lord Lucien from Fable 2 *Cough* *Cough* Funnily enough Fable 2 also has the orphan cliche too as well as the "loved one murdered before protagonist's eyes" cliche.

MrFirewolf18 Let's be honest. Fable 2 really pulled one off the left feild with that villain. It's really extremely rare that the "all powerful" final boss of a RPG is a wimp on purpose. More often it's because we took too many sidequests and we did grind too much XP so that our power exceed the Final Boss's by a large margin. Best example. In FF7, just play the game straight up and never bother with chocobo raising. Go fight Sephiroth. It will be one of the hardest and more rewarding battle you'll ever play. Luckily, that was my first experience. However, raise chocobos until you have the summon "Knights of the Round", grind to be able to kill Emeral Weapon, then go to Sephiroth. The fight will only last one round and will be very disapointing.

No matter the amazing feats you do like kill the most legendary monster or saved a planet or killed a dragon that threatened your world, people still want to fuck with you. You can have the most powerful weapons/armor but their is always a fucking bandit that thinks they can take you on...

You acquire a boat midway through the game then an airship nearer the end. Your characters are a bunch of 16/17 year olds who manage to beat hundreds of trained and seasoned soldiers. You beat the 'main boss' midway through the game, then discover that 'someone else' was in fact behind it all, and you now have to go on another quest to find and stop them. You can travel the world without a passport or any hassle from border patrol/customs, and every country and town uses the same currency. You discover the most powerful legendary weapon in the world and it just happens to be suited to your main character. No one has any issue with your character just barging into their house, and anyone inside will offer you advice.

You defeat monsters with weapons 1/10000th of their size. Random encounters around the third town are much more powerful than the boss of the first dungeon. If you can recruit monsters/enemies to fight for you, they will always be much weaker than when you needed to fight them. No matter how outlandish your weapon (umbrellas, spoons, megaphones, sentient dolls...), the local weaponsmith will always have one for you. No matter how badass your female lead, they will always be totally helpless if they are captured. Spells, no matter how widespread their damage in the animation, will leave no lasting scars on your surrounding.

This is the reason I love KOTOR so much. I'm playing the game again on my iPad and it's amazing how Bioware grabbed like 4 or 5 cliches that are on this list and created the best plot twist in gaming history. I never thought that a protagonist with amnesia that is conventionally the chosen one to save the galaxy could be so damn convincing.

I love how you showed Witcher 3 at the end, considering how many other tropes it subverts. Geralt isn't the main character, isn't truly special (besides being a Witcher), doesn't have amnesia, is as morally fluid as the person playing, has a restriction on his inventory, carries a tiny amount of gear into actual combat, and his weapons and armor are period specific and realistic in scale. It's probably why I plunked over 80 hours into the game and broke my DLC cherry when I purchased both content packs.

Here's one for you. Lovers. Ah, finally, after slaying the dragon lord that almost destroyed the planet, I can just kick back and reeeeeeeela-. Oh, hey babe. Didn't see ya there. No matter how you slice it, in most RPGs, it's always either implied or flat out said that the girl always travelling with you is supposed to be dating you or another major party member. Which is cool and all, especially if you're playing a darker RPG and can use that romance as an escape, but if you play multiple RPGs, it starts feeling like the romance has devolved from magical to you just have a harem.

heronumber009 Conception was at least well known enough for an English release to be a thing. And shitty combat system aside, the story made it to where you needed to literally ROMANCE every single girl and replay the story until you got a file where all of them were romanced, which resulted in an ending where it was basically a harem. A harem where each girl had genuine feelings for the main protagonist and he returned those feelings, but a harem nonetheless.

+CoryPortal In Earthbound, you dont carry multiple weapons. At the VERY end of the game, ness will hold 2 bats... IF you are super duper, ridiculously lucky. The casey jones bat and the legendary bat. Inventory management in earthbound is actually an interesting part of the game. Also, number 5 doesn't really apply, because your first fights are against the end game enemies lol. Buzz buzz saves you ofc.

What do you think a cliche is? It's a trait that is almost always connected to a genre (or idea), and because troupe is usually for a physical object they used cliche correctly.

A trope is a common, reoccurring element in fiction. A cliche is an overused element that lacks originality. Again, they are similar, but different. A trope is neither good nor bad and in genres, it can become expected. An old, wise mentor character is a trope. Having an inventory is an RPG is a trope. A cliche, on the other hand, is usually viewed negatively and that the creator(s) have no originality. A good example of this is a hero not looking back at explosions, or the main character of an anime or JPRG having big hair. I think a cliche can be a trope, but not vice versa. I'm not 100% on it. It's like the whole square versus rectangle thing. A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't necessarily a square. This is what I was saying about them not being synonyms even though they were similar. Square is not a synonym of rectangle even though they're similar. They have slightly different qualifiers.

I didn't think about the hoarder with the bottomless backpack! LOL I would say another cliche has to do with NPCs NOT really helping you. At times, you may find the odd person who will actually give you something for free. The world may come to an end and shopkeepers, along with average people, will not do anything to help you! You will still be charged for equipment, weapons, and items to prepare yourself for the final battle! LOL There are also some instances where you have to do a side quest(s) to be eligible for a discount in some shops, but you are still held accountable to pay something :) Great video!

Time is running out - at various points in the adventure, a character (protagonist, party memory, or NPC) will say something like “We must hurry. Time is running out” or “Hurry Hero. Time is running out”. All of this is to create a sense of urgency and purpose, but the reality is you can just stand there for minutes or hours and nothing bad would happen. There are exceptions. Majora’s mask comes to mind. But, it just seems like a lot of games say time is running out when it really isn’t.

There's the weapon/monster conveyor belt. The weakest monsters (and weapons) are right by the starting town, and strangely enough the weapons and monsters get stronger as you progress; you'll never reach the final town in the game and find them selling nothing but entry-level weapons. Also: each character in your party has only one weapon type that they can use, and that weapon type starts showing up in shops at just about the same time that the character that can use it is recruited.
