Undying Mercenaries is quickly becoming a modern classic; the main tech in that series is just bananas. Basically an alien artificial womb that gives birth to you as a fully gown adult, so when you die on the battlefield, the brass can just print you out, give you a rifle, pat you on the back and send you back out to die again. 💪

This was a fun video! If you like virtual reality and hard sci-fi you might enjoy Permutation City by Greg Egan. The ideas in that book blew me away!

Cody has read some Egan, but I haven't yet - that sounds like the right one for me to start with for sure!

Can we get an honorable mention for Bill the Galactic Hero's "bloater drive"?
@hugonautspod Жыл бұрын
Would you rather travel by bloater drive or improbability drive? PS while we're talking about Harry, have you read the Stainless Steel Rat, and if so do you think it holds up today? We've been thinking about picking that one up.
@JustinAnderson-uw2kv Жыл бұрын
@@hugonautspod I think I prefer my odds (pun intended) with the improbability drive! And yes, I did read a bunch of Stainless Steel Rat books as a kid. I enjoyed them back then, but honestly I've never gone back for a re-read, so no idea how they would hold up today...

Thoughts lots of thoughts... The Ansible idea has been used by many authors. I like the Carlotti radio used in A. Bertram Chandler's Rim Worlds novels. Beep by James Blish has a great take on instantaneous communications. Brent said "It makes no sense to move physical objects between stars." But, but Space Traders are my favorite kind of story. Bujold's use of artificial wombs is much like what Cherryh uses in her Alliance/Union stories. The Ancillaries are a great concept, when I figured out how they worked it blew my mind. The Imago is a scary idea but the Cloudhooks the Citizens use are even scarier. My #1 SF technology would be FTL travel, you know, how else would Space Traders get their goods delivered?

What are your favorite Space Trader stories? Just finished Downbelow Station - absolutely love the merchants in that one!
@bretgrandrath2935 Жыл бұрын
Oh yes, Cherryh's Family Merchant ships are great, I feel like I belong on one. Other favorites include the Solar Queen series by Andre Norton, I still want to be a Free Trader when I grow up. The Nicholas van Rijn and David Falkayn stories by Poul Anderson are perfect examples. How can you go wrong with a book titled Trader To The Stars? A. Bertram Chandler's main character, John Grimes, is a starship Captain trying to make a living traveling the worlds of the Galactic Rim. The Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon starts with Trading In Danger. The main character starts working for her family's interstellar shipping corporation and then the series moves more into MilSF territory. Added bonus points for the use of shipboard Ansibles. Angel Station by Walter Jon Williams has "two down on their luck traders on the edge of human space." Makes me think of Cherryh's A/U stories way down the timeline after things go very wrong. These are some of my favorite things.

Michael Crichton had a bunch. He is more an idea guy than writer. Jurassic Park of course is the big one where he made DNA sequencing simple enough everyone could understand it and feel it’s possible to bring back dinosaurs.
@hugonautspod Жыл бұрын
Most definitely! The Human Genome Project succeeded just about a decade after he wrote the book, and was definitely helped by the huge public support for understanding DNA. That first genome cost $100M+ to sequence, so needed a lot of public dollars to make it happen!
