You do know Sonic on the SMS wasn't a port? It was a game in it's on right. You shouldn't have half of the games on the list by that rule then as the majority were Arcade or Japanese computer ports.

Yea... The Game Gear was a portable Master System, That's why the games where so similar. Any of those games that have the same name should have been included. Not like the Game Boy and NES which had night & day difference on every single aspect. Sonic for either vs Castlevania for either... That's all the proof anyone needs.

It's sad that few people, even "gaming experts" (cough), don't often praise SEGA for bringing arcade games home with levels and gameplay intact, despite the to-be-expected graphics difference. the SMS had many different games that got built in, it all depends witch version you got, if you open your console unit yould notice there are 4 or 5 different "versions" which refer to the different BIOS versions the early units had either a "Please turn off and insert a cartridge" message or snail maze/safari hunt which where SG1000 titles which is a japanese exclusive console BEFORE the master system hence their more primitive graphics. Hang on came after SM/SH and was the V3 bios after that Alex Kidd was the V4 but after '92 units could be found with a V5 bios containing Sonic 1, i have a Mk 1 SMS with a V4 denotion on the mainboard with Alex Kidd built in and a SMS 2 with sonic 1 Different countries my have had different pack in titles *Japan or Brazil* and dont take my words as gospel, reasearch for yourself for more answers

Also... the dark thing that no one wants to remember is that nintendo used evil marketing ploys to further their products. I dont remember if they did this vs sega MS, but I DO remember they killed the atari lynx that was in direct competition vs the inferior gameboy. They did this by threatening to pull their products off the shelf anywhere that sold lynx stuff. Profit would have suffered, so sellers sold nintendo stuff instead of atari lynx.

I felt like I was going rogue buying a used Sega MS during the Nintendo-era (I had an NES also). Buying it used, it came with a bunch of the previous owner's games, including Phantasy Star. The amazing thing was, they had left pages and pages of hand-drawn maps, notes and things they had observed. I played it through without using them so that I could have the challenge, but it was a huge treasure to get ownership of that person's hard work. The maps were incredible, in DnD style on graph paper with notes, and their notes were intricate to say the least. So...cool. Sadly when I went into the Marines my mom got rid of a bunch of that stuff when I was away. I wish I still had them or even track down who had done all of that. Must have been 1987 or 88, Powerplay in Aurora, Colorado.

@teenkitsune9 жыл бұрын
Naughty Monkey I get what you're saying, and I'm not trying to argue. I'm just saying, only those who grew up with it or who are in the know actually know what a Master System is, today those who didn't grow up with it, most of them don't know this amazing system existed, but everyone knows what an NES is, even those born in 2002 know because of the cultural influence. Again, not trying to devalue the Master System as it was great, and I'm not trying to argue either. I'm just saying, as far as the current times goes, the Master System is virtually unknown, the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Dreamcast are SEGA's most well known consoles, nearly anyone can say they know what those are, but like the Saturn the Master System is known only to those who either owned/played it or those who are in the know.

Stopped watching after "no ports so no Sonic". The Master System Sonics aren't ports, they're entirely different games from the Mega Drive/Genesis titles. Then you start 10 with Fantasy Zone when, by the logic that excluded Sonic, the 16 bit Super Fantasy Zone should make Fantasy Zone ineligible. You just don't know your subject matter at all, do you?
@XxShilar9 жыл бұрын
+SJ Webster A "port" of a game is where you take a game from one system, and put it to another. Sonic the Hedgehog was a Sega Genesis game, and was ported to the SMS (and soon after Game Gear) to gain more support for the system (and broaden appeal). Fantasy Zone STARTED on the SMS, and Super Fantasy Zone was a port to the Genesis. Sorry, but no comparison. My fave top SMS games (in order): Phantasy Star, R-type, Fantasy Zone, Golvellius, and Shinobi. The others well... not so much (yes, I have played Wonderboy III, and got stuck, so no I didn't like it).

Thank you for remembering the Master System, this system really needs more love. However I am surprised you didn't consider Sonic 2 since it was NOT a port. It was a prequel and in between game between Genesis 1 and 2, and also is features the origin and first appearance of Tails.

I unlocked Opa-Opa in Sonic And SEGA All Stars Racing and now I’m interested in Fantasy Zone since it looks like an interesting game. There’s also an arcade version of the game

Two of my favorite SMS games..Phantasy Star (STILL AMAZING!!!) and Super Wonder Boy in Super Monster Land. Not sure if that was ported backwards to the SMS or forwards to the Genesis, but I LOVED that game.
@matthewandrews44486 жыл бұрын
Master Of Darkness should have had an honorable mention and yes i'm aware it was a PAL release only being released in Europe but we did however get a NTSC release for the Game Gear in 1993

I think that one of the best titles in the SMS is "Kenseiden"... one of the forgotten treasures of the SEGA Master System catalog.

Loved my Master system , Wonderboy 2 and 3. And great games like Black belt , Bank panic, Enduro racer ,European club soccer which made your thumbs hurt playing it and so many more

really good list. I'd only make a few changes. well done. Fantasy Zone 2 and wonderboy in monster land would have been on my top 10 list

Peguin Land is a puzxle game with a unique concept and deserves more than an honorable mention. Most puzzle games are the same these days , match the colors Nintendo recently came out with a game where you can create your own Mario levels , You could do that on penguin land almost 30 years ago, Also Rastan, Thunder Blade, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World and Hang On should have made the list

Operation Wolf was a classic. Was great playing it when I was a kid. Alex Kidd I remember playing on my brothers Master System as well as it was the inbuilt game in the console :)

Golden Axe Warrior is missing, as Golvelius :-) But in my heart, at least a top 20 would be needed for the Master System! Too much nostalgia from my childwood ^^

I have always considered the Master System to be one of the great, criminally underrated game systems. Apart from the games shown here, some other great games for the SMS that are definitely worth playing, if you can get a hold of them: Sonic The Hedgehog The Terminator Golden Axe Golden Axe Warrior Space Harrier After Burner Double Dragon Back To The Future ll Star Wars Predator 2
@scarosone143 жыл бұрын

Wonder Boy in Monster Land may be my favorite. I had Rocky, Drago was was ridiculous.
@jean-sebastienharvey43857 жыл бұрын
Rocky was easy if you had auto-fire on your controller, to make the most of the inter-match training sessions, thus maximizing your power during the fights.

@@TripleRp Monster land is amazing BUT way too difficult especially with the dumb time limit AND the maze at the end. It just ruins the experience. I have played it countless times since my childhood and only managed to get to the endboss once. I died of course. Have you beaten it? Wonderboy 3 is much better in my opinion. Perfectly balanced with a great learning curve and lots of neat exploring. On a side note; some underrated Sega Master System games: Rastan, Alien 3 (AMAZING game! creepy and fun game with tons of action and great music), Master of Darkness and Jurassic Park just to name a few
@lcarpetron69979 жыл бұрын
Black Belt, Rambo: First Blood Part II and The Ninja were pretty good for SMS games too. They at least should be honorable mentions.

Why would you show so much more of the Arcade version of Operation Wolf instead of the Master System? I know it looks and sounds better, but it's not the point of this video, right?

Sega Master System had such great graphics for its time. 5:13 Also, it was able to handle FM sounds (unless it's another version of the game on another system)? That's impressive!

The Sonic games on the Master System are not Mega Drive ports they are separate games featuring the same character. Hence why Sonic 2 for MS came out before Sonic 2 for MD, and Sonic Chaos for MS came out before Sonic 3 on MD.

Wonder Boy 3. All those Saturday afternoons playing out with my mates, then coming home to play WB3 while the smell of cooking chicken drifted upstairs from the kitchen. Simple pleasures, before the world got too complicated.
