"Afraid of Sunlight" - Afraid of Sunlight 5. "Neverland" - Marbles 6. "Splintering Heart" - Holidays in Eden 7. "Season's End" - Seasons End 8. "Runaway" - Brave 9. "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Script for a Jester's Tear 10. "She Chameleon" - Fugazi The toughest part of this one is virtually everything on "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws" could be on this list. From the Hogarth era, I would say the same about "Seasons End" and "Afraid of Sunlight". These albums have very little filler, and some very good, well constructed songs. For those who think I cheated with my second choice, I always looked at those three songs as one piece in three parts. I tried to limit my choices to one per album, thus highlighting other great songs from equally strong disks.

I like the cut of your jib, my friend! Nice list!
@musicnerd89694 жыл бұрын
@@jeffjacobson59 Why, thank you. Jeff, may our friendship be long and fruitful. This was not easy. I have problems with the list--but I don't know how else I could do this. "Misplaced Childhood" has individual songs, but they all really belong together with possible as a rock symphony in many movements with the only exception possibly being "White Feather". I thought I needed to pull out only one track there--but which? It was either "Bitter Suite" or "Blind Curve". On any given day it could be one of the two, but how do you focus on one movement only without missing serious pieces in the rest. Nothing on that album exists in its own space with exception to "White Feather"--but it even hints at the rest contextually. It could have been selected as stand-alone, but not without sacrificing the grandeur of the rest of the album. It had to be something significant as a movement within this rock symphony. A similar situation exists with "Brave". My second problem occurs on "Afraid of Sunlight", where "Afraid of Sunrise", "Out of this World" and "Afraid of Sunlight" are really one song in three movements. Its' not packaged that way. "Out of this World" is phenomenal. How can you not have that piece without the one before it, and the one after it. Yet, it's the centerpiece of the poem and should have made the cut. They are conceptually and thematically linked. But as the tail end of a symphonic short-poem, "Afraid of Sunlight" is a great end. It summarizes the first two movements perfectly and has a killer terminus. The one thing for which Marillion never receives ample credit is their final cuts. They have a proven track record for writing end pieces to major works of art--and this choice hightlights that. "King" does this for the album, too, yet another great track. While I am extremely grateful for your kind words, this one was conflicting. For the record, I do prefer Fish as the vocalist because of his writing, but Hogarth has taken the band to another set of heights that Fish could not have reached. Without Hogarth "Brave" and "Afraid of Sunlight" would not exist, nor would the best bits of "Marbles".

Marillion is one of my all time top five bands, any era (H has parodied this long time controversy by wearing a T-shirt with the legend “New singer since 1989"). My number one song is Grendel and my third is Warm Wet Circles/That Time of the Night. I have to give kudos to Gaza as my number two song. From Sounds that Can't be Made (2012), it's one of their greatest epics. An achievement in storytelling, it deals with the everlasting Arab-Israeli crisis from the viewpoint of a Palestinian child. Heart wrenching. I'm sure that the storytelling element was influenced by the Elton John/Bernie Taupin classic Indian Sunset (about the plight of Native Americans) and ELP's Pirates (with a nod to Pete Sinfield for those awesome lyrics). As I mentioned in a comment in the ranking albums show, F E A R is my favorite album, and it will be a few years (if ever) I could pick a song from it for my ever changing top 10 (and you thought picking cuts from Misplaced Childhood and/or Brave was difficult!!!), as it is next to impossible to segregate cuts from what essentially are three suites (4-5 songs) followed respectively by single songs.

Cannot do as I unfortunately left the party with fish. I did like seasons end but kind of followed fish afterwards rather than his ex band. Also I would rate 'childhood's end' as the standout part of misplaced and would include it in my top 10 for certain. Keep up the good work!

Chronological order: Seasons End...No One Can...Beautiful...Estonia...This Strange Engine...Interior Lulu...The Invisible Man...Ocean Cloud...Neverland...Gaza. Stuff from F.E.A.R. might make the cut eventually. I haven't taken the time to properly absorb it yet, four years later.😂 I appreciate that this was a chance for two old friends to reminisce about Fish era Marillion and more power to you, it's your show. That said, I think the audience that is not familiar with Marillion could have benefited from a co-host that favors the later stuff, especially post 1995.

Which was already done on our Ranking the Albums show, where Steven Reid came on and he favorited the H era albums.

@@seaoftranquilityprog Agreed. I'm actually revisiting that episode right now. And queuing up some Marillion albums I haven't played as much lately. 👍

Pete, I believe you are right that Marillion weren't a particularly big band in the US but over here in Fish's homeland by 1985 on the back of Misplace Childhood they had become huge. They were big enough already among prog rock fans but Misplaced Childhood introduced them to the mainstream. By 1988 when he left they were massive all over Europe.

Nice show guys. Picking a Marillion top ten is just impossible, but before I overthink this, here go’s: Assassing Man of a Thousand Faces Afraid of Sunlight Heart of Lothian Beautiful Script for a Jester’s Tear Seasons End Estonia King of Sunset Town The Great Escape As Pete said, some albums are difficult to separate in your mind. Also the two eras are very different, so it’s easier in my mind to think of them as different bands.

I'm loving the series on Marillion because some of the albums I've never heard but I am going to. The two hogarth albums seasons end and afraid of sunlight I must listen to and brave of course. Being a Fish= Marillion man I still love this band.

All Right, now we have top 10 Marillion, next a Deep Cut Dive Marillion (although to be honest anything mentioned about Marillion on this side of the pond would be a deep cut LOL) Then a top 10 - Fish followed with a Deep Cut Dive - Fish. Just a thought, Anyways loved the episode you guys are correct on many fronts yes 20 songs, Fish era / Hogarth era. Absolutely great catalogue of material in both eras. Here is my list with this little caveat - I couldn't pick just 1 out of the 3 song intros to either Misplaced Childhood or Clutching at Straws so I didn't pick any of the 6 songs even though they are my 2 favourite Marillion albums. I also tried to keep it 5 each but, just couldn't make it exactly. Here we go, 10) Cover My Eyes (Pain & Heaven) 9) Grendel 8) The Uninvited Guest 7) King of Sunset Town 6) Cinderella Search 5) Easter 4) Forgotten Sons 3) Script for a Jesters Tear 2) Heart of Lothian 1) Sugar Mice If it were 10 Fish era I would include Jigsaw, Garden Party, Market Square Heroes. Hogarth Era - 80 Days, Alone Again in the Lap of Luxury, Gazpacho, Afraid of Sunlight, Dry Land, Beautiful.

I think this list is very hard to do. For me, however, I would need to add tunes like "This Strange Engine", "After Me", "Estonia", "Invisible Man", "Gaza" and "Ocean Cloud". Great show, as usual. I had two encounters with Fish that NEARfest he played. Let's say he had a LOT of tequila. The first encounter, we almost came to blows. The second, he was having a "That time of the night" moment, talking politics. I can only imagine what he would say now... I say all that to say: careful what you ask for, Pete. I would love that interview, but things are always prone to be explosive.

Really needed Steven Reid here - kinda sad that neither even mentioned, much less picked, any track post-1994. Marbles and FEAR are among the bands most acclaimed and popular albums. I know Pete said he doesnt connect with them but FEAR is very, very much his cup of tea. I think it deserves another shot as I wonder if you made your mind up on new h material 25 years back.
