This video is about thirteen of the creepiest abandoned insane asylums in Canada.
Try to stick around until the end if you can, because some of the stories surrounding these buildings are truly mind-blowing.

Hello. My name is Joshua shea. I have worked at riverview hospital in 2007-2009, I was a janitor for a filming company and was usually there working night shift. Growing up in Coquitlam I have many friends and family mention how haunted the buildings and grounds are. I've had one creepy experience when I was working on the 3rd floor and no one was working on the top floor. Floor 4. And 2 other accompanying workers heard a woman scream so loud above us we instantly ran outside and waited for security to check the building for intrusive people but their was no one found. And a second time we were in the underground tunnels cleaning and it's so dark down there we couldn't see 15 feet in front of yourself. Never heard anything down there but the feeling of being watched was so unreal and unbearable we hardly stayed down there for 20 mins a time..

My grandma used to work there as a receptionist I think! She used to tell me all these creepy stories about things she’d hear and see, or other stories that she heard from co-workers. I can’t remember much of them unfortunately. But they were always interesting.

I've never been inside Riverview proper, but I have been on the grounds a number of times. My sister has schizophrenia, and for years she was committed at a newer mental facility called Colony Farm, just across the highway from Riverview. When she was transitioning to being able to live on her own, she lived in one of the cottages on the Riverview grounds. I believe they were once used as housing for hospital staff, now they're housing for psychiatric patients who no longer need full time care, but aren't yet ready to be fully independent. Anyway, while she was living there, I went there with my mother a few times to pick her up or drop her off. I can attest, the grounds have a very eerie feeling even in broad daylight. There's no way you'd get me into the actual hospital building alone, especially at night. I have no way to verify if this is true or not, but I've heard there are sections where the night security staff flat out refuse to go.

@@lukea.907 I got the same impression. Every English-language article on him is absolutely scathing, but if the past six years have taught me anything, it's the value of seeing journalistic opinion for what it is. From what limited knowledge I now have of the subject, I get the impression that his decision was a desperate attempt to get much-needed funding for social institutions under his watch, which unfortunately backfired horribly. Good intentions, but regrettable consequences.

You are so right, time frame and everything. Over the last five years or so everything I've heard him mentioned or read anything about him one would think the man was the devil himself. Then one day I heard a man named Charles Coulombe speak about him and I felt ashamed that I hadn't done my own research until that point. No man lives in a vacuum and outside his time. Thank you for all your work and replying, it made my day.

My dad worked at Riverview, as a cook...for 20 some odd years. My mom was a psychiatric nurse at Woodlands asylum in New Westminster and got a transfer to Riverview. That was how my parents met. They got married in 1956 after dating for a year. They both quit working at Riverview in the late 60s since neither of them could stand the treatment the patients were getting, or lack thereof. My mom tried endlessly to bring the atrocities to the newspapers, only to be told that doctors said "former crazy nurses will try to come forward with horror stories, not to be believed". Finally someone covered the story and former patients came forward with their nightmare stories. I believe it was the Province newspaper that did the story and blew it wide open. Rapes, abuse, torture, tied up for days with no food, severe beatings, etc. NOW.....I wish they'd repurpose it into an addiction rehab centre, and work camp, to give addicts working experience, along with getting clean. Sadly our govt. doesn't think addicts are worth saving though.

@@fadetoblond I have seen solar punk movements to reclaim our communities and I think they are a good direction but we should at least recognize native languages as valid and maybe learn something from the people who live here? What local plant life makes the best salads etc There's so much opportunity for positive change if we talk to eachother and that's kind of why native reservations are located so far from settler cities, why we don't learn about their culture first hand. The government has not been subtle with its propaganda that wipes it's hands clean of current devastation of native culture they are directly responsible for.

I’m happy to see the HUGE St Thomas Psychiatric Hospital not get missed on this list!I worked as a kitchen porter there, in the mid 70’s. It also had a network of tunnels and that’s how the “meal wagons” were transported to each ward. I remember the old “electro-shock” room was being used to store paper products for kitchen use. It was a VERY creepy room to enter! The mens criminally insane ward, the women’s criminally insane ward and the geriatric wards were the worst! Peace

@@knitwit014 that's very true. But you know what? Agyrt working in hospitals and nursing homes for 33 years, I've never even heard of anyone else having an experience with paranormal activities, ghosts, or ANYTHING like it in a hospital. I have heard of haunted hospitals. Its rare and they're always deserted and have a questionable past regarding treatment. So when it comes to hospitals, it's not a matter of personal varying abilities to sense the paranormal because of the vast numbers of people who work there. If it happened much AT ALL , people would be talking about it regularly. But they dont.

Great historical video, and as expected, diplomatically handled ❤️ I did a practicum at Riverview. That was before it was "de-institutionalized" and a lot of its patients sent out onto the streets. At that time very many patients were free to roam the grounds which were very picturesque at the time, and except for those patients who had to have on-ward meals for health reasons, most of them shared the cafeteria with staff. Depending on your attitude, you can either breathe a sigh of relief, or consider it sobering, that it was hard to tell who was who in a lunchroom. At some point it can be said that these types of facilities "tried", but I think we can all agree it's nowhere near good enough. It always broke my heart that some people who were completely normal mentally were confined for life there because of profound physical deformities. We have to do better by our fellow humans. A few years ago a few of my friends who are "sensitives" investigated the abandoned buildings thanks to connections one of them had. I always find it interesting that they said one of them took a photo of the people walking ahead in one of the underground corridors... and opposite to what normally happens in such photos, although he took pictures of those people in front of him, when the picture was examined nobody was in the shot! They never separated (dark, spooky corridors, after all!) and he swears they were in the viewfinder at the time of photographing. I respect and trust these people completely, so I take them at their word.

I'm surprised there's no Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford on here. It's a major facility and one of the first. It inspired the Weyburn Asylum which came years after. SHNB was a fully self-sufficient community that at it's peak of capacity held around 2000 patients I believe, built in 1913. The book managing madness expands on the history of this building as well as Weyburn. I think SHNB often gets forgotten/swept under the rug. I worked there while it was active caring for patients. I am typing this at 02:00 from the new facility built on the same property. Some of the same clientele. Asylums never went away, we changed the name and removed them from the public eye.

Were any of these Asylums patterned after the Kirkbride Arrchitecture? These Kirkbride buildings were in every state in the US. It sounds like originally the concept was born out of a real desire to provide a healthy, wholesome environment for the mentally ill. With decreased funding, overcrowding and ill trained staff the abuses just exploded in these institutions. Very sad. And even going on virtual tours of these once beautiful buildings leaves one with a feeling of sadness and loss for all the pain, fear and confusion those walls once witnessed.

The downfall of this is so many people who would get there hands on it and go and steal and brake stuff would outweigh the ones who would go just to visit take pictures etc. I know of an old farm house that back in 2020 was amazing and untouched an explorer then told one person the address and they gave it to many and 2 months later everything was gone and I’m talking beds couches tv radios all from the 70s all in perfect condition the walls were in amazing condition for an abandoned place and in the 2 months after the address was shared it was striped and people vandalized it to the point where if you were to see the 2 months difference in pictures you wouldn’t even think it was the same house. I was going to do a photoshoot there but the owner ended up having it torn down due to the damage. I’ll never forget how sad other were that have used it for retro and Halloween shoots were. This is why a lot of places are gatekept by explorers because it only takes one bad seed to ruin it for the rest

In America, the asylums were closed down, it seemed abruptly, the decitizens just sent somewhere one way. Most ended up homeless on the streets with this queer idea they could refuse treatment; or ended up in prison. I really don’t think the original evil of hospital “incarceration “ was replaced by a better idea. What is also goofy is those judged unable to stand trial are cared for in criminal hospitals while those not committing crimes are left to die on the streets .

I've lived in London, Ontario for most of my life. The "London Asylum for the Insane" was just a part of the very large, London Psychiatric Hospital. The LPH has now been torn down, along with most other structures on the property, as of the time of writing this (20July2024). I don't know if they kept any of the old buildings, as there is some large housing development scheduled to go in there now. Edit: My grandfather trained as a navigator at what became St Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. He graduated in 1943, and flew 66 combat missions with the RCAF, before being shot down on his 26th birthday. Him and 5 other members of the crew bailed and evaded capture, the last man, the tail-gunner, was captured and spend the rest of the war in a POW camp.

Camsell wasn't an asylum tho. It was a sanatorium then a regular general hospital. Now its an apartment building. I can only imagine how haunted it is

I live near the Mimico nut house. Many years ago when they started construction, I went into the underground tunnels. One led to a crematorium were they burnt the corpses.

That's what that big smoke stack is above by the "skating trail" and parking area, at least if memory serves me, it's been 25 or more years since I've been in there. Did you see the cells with the metal rings up on the walls like an old dungeon?
@RottenAnimal

@@hectic6981 No I didn't see the cells or anything disturbing, I just explored the tunnels.

Oh hey the Highbury Hilton made the list. Yes that's what quite a few older residents of London called that asylum. Sad that it shut down because now they're all stuck homeless downtown and have zero support structure to help them. So they're just wandering around having arguments with themselves or just generally unaware of the world around them, resulting in a very high risk of being hit by cars. I've also heard accusations of other cities bussing their mentally ill homeless to London because of that asylum, so that makes the situation even worse.

For real, I went to Humber Lakeshore, and I'm going to be 100% honest: I hated having a night class in one of the “cottages” that surrounded the L building. My friends and I were witness to some scary stuff. Doors were closing by themselves, shadows of people walking when we knew for sure it was just us. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

I recently worked an overnight security shift monitoring equipment and running generators at the gallipeau center. I was told which buildings were empty and which had been renovated and repurposed. While working, I saw movement clearly through multiple windows that shouldn’t have had anyone inside, including the building directly next to where I was parked and posted. I began avoiding the windows and after hearing noises coming from the woods and the building creaking I moved my car into the center of the compound so that I could still watch everything but any threat would have to come into light and at least 30m of visible parking lot to pose a threat to me - I’m glad that nothing happened where I would have had to protect the equipment. They didn’t need to be paying me to stay awake 😅 spooky vibes but I’d do it again
