Sri Lankan food is actually a reflection of our multiculturalism. We've got dosa (pronounced here as thosa) and wadai from Tamil culture...biriyani and watalappam from the Moors...malay pickle from the Malays...lamprais and lovecake from the Dutch Burghers. And of course the traditional Sinhalese rice and curry is unmatchable. Fun fact, the "s" is silent and it's pronounced "lump-rye"! As a Dutch Burgher myself, "authentic" lamprais is a rarity now, my great-aunt is probably rolling in her grave for replacing the "frickadels" with "cutlets" 😂 but either way it's delicious!! Also, the secret ingredient that adds the tanginess to the achcharu is none other than - vinegar! We use a special type of Sri Lankan vinegar made of - you guessed it - fermented coconuts 😁😁

Wow 😳 This is awesome to get so much great, useful information from someone who really knows what they're talking about. I love the fact the multiculturalism comes out in the food. Such a wonderful variety on offer. Thanks so much for this. We really appreciate it. 🙏

@@FrugalTravellers not sure if you guys are dessert fans, but if yes, here are two traditional Sri Lankan desserts to look out for! First is "kiri pani" - buffalo curd with kithul treacle. Kithul is a type of palm tree and the syrup from it is delicious! It also has a lower glycemic index than regular cane sugar...but, many sellers will adulterate pure kithul treacle by mixing in cane sugar, which changes the unique texture and taste...so you gotta make sure it's the genuine thing! Also, curd made from buffalo milk is considered much better quality than cow's milk but it isn't always available. The second is watalappam, which is a kind of caramelized custard (??) lightly spiced with cloves, cardamoms and again - kithul treacle.

Thank you for posting this I enjoyed it and "liked" and "subscribed". My questions are fundamental. I'm renting a Tuk tuk so I have transportation covered. On an average traveler's budget for two people, how much did food and accommodations cost per day? I'll be there in Sept for a month. Many thanks in advance.

Hi. Thanks for the question. I think we covered it in one of our videos but can't remember which now. We spent $US 11 per person per day over 7 weeks travelling there. Transport was a minimal cost on public transport. Hope this helps. 🙏👍 Have a great trip.

Secondly, your favourite foods sound delicious. Thank you for sharing them with us. Lastly, I just checked with Lee as to why we don't number our videos as I think it's a great idea. It's all to do with SEO, as if the first video shown by the algorithm to a new viewer is No.26 in a series, then the viewer is likely to think they're too far behind and lack the impetus to watch. Hi, I’ve been following your vlogs of SL for while. The doughnut shape vadai is made up of Urad Dal beans. They soak it in water and grind it for the batter. Whereas the hard crispy vadai some times with a prawn in the centre is made of ordinary dal. Also, the green lumpy odd looking vegetable is known as bitter melon. Authentic Lumprice is hard to find. It was invented by the Dutch extract of Sri Lanka. You should be able to find a good Lumprice in somewhere in Colombo, next time. Unfortunately, I’ve been living in Australia about 3 decades now, so unable to recommend a place. However, I’m glad you liked my beautiful island. Take Care!!! 😊

@@FrugalTravellers , Aren't you guys based in Aus ? In which case you have more chance of finding the "authentic" Lamprais over there than in SL. Most Sri Lankan Dutch Burghers are settled over there especially in the Melbourne area & I know there are some Burgher run establishments in that region.
@CD-ho4hm6 ай бұрын
True. Where, I live in Melbourne most take away is done by Sinhalese people. It isn’t authentic. Melbourne is enormous. Dandenong is where a lot of Burghers live. It’s very far from where I live.

Hoppers - Yes, it is a fermented RICE flour batter. Origin (‘Appam’ from south India) what differs is the condiments and flavours. Lamprais - few places do this the original way. However it was a Dutch influence on Sri Lankan cuisine. They brought influences from Malaysia/Indonesia. Achcharu - The zing is from coconut vinegar.

Mothers matched the curries with rice in order to give balanced diet to children..One vegetable with cocunut milk, or grated cocont , naother one with oily base, fried or cooked, another one with chilly, basically fish or flesh, kind of leaves, kind of yam, etc..if the yam is cooked no any other similar veg.is cooked tohether...if jack is cooked no nay other yam like potato, or casawa..because they are slow diagestive...coconut smbol, rice fish with garcenia (embul thiyal, sour flavor) is delicious breakfast...

Hello Mandy and Lee! Sri Lankan food looks so wonderful! I may be able to survive the heat as long as i have a healthy dose of ice cream, smoothies, and coconut water. 😊. I wonder if you had any gastronomical issues while there. We americans have sensitive digestive systems. Except for microplastics. We seem to be okay with that! 😆. Take care and I'm very happy to see you both looking so healthy!! 🤗🐕

Mandy and Lee, I am thinking of going to Sri Lanka but struggling to make the decision. One of my anxieties is dogs and there are so many there. Did you find it difficult to handle the street dogs and were they at times aggressive?
@FrugalTravellers5 ай бұрын
Hello Barbara. I've thought back, and I'm pretty sure that the only aggressive dogs we've encountered in the past year were in one village hiking up to the rice terraces in Banaue, the Philippines. If you have a fear of dogs, the Maldives would be good for you as they're illegal here 😳🥹 ~ Mandy
@barbaras58745 ай бұрын
@@FrugalTravellers thank you so much Mandy. I had no idea about the Maldives, sounds like a very nice place to travel! I have always felt uneasy around street dogs. My partner really wants to go to Sri Lanka but I am finding myself feeling very anxious and unable to decide. There seems too much I am worried about to enjoy it fully unfortunately. Although it looks like a beautiful country from your videos. I feel like it's maybe a bit too much for me at the moment. Do you ever feel a lot of anxiety about a trip? You both always seem so calm and positive!
