SimCity on SNES is one of my all time favs for mellowing out to. I remember getting it at the Mercer Mall in Hills back when it first came out. Today it has been replaced with City Skylines and the latest SimCity with City’s of Tomorrow. The music of the SNES Version and Mr Wright popping out will forever be burned in to my brain.

I could immediately smell the popcorn when you said Hills. I actually played I'm City on the SNES when it first came out. One of my cousins visiting from out of state brought his SNES to my grandparents house. It was a good time.

Great video. I know for myself as I’ve gotten older I find puzzle games very relaxing because my brain is focused on solving the puzzles but it’s at my own pace, no time limits, it’s just a very chill experience. It also helps that most puzzle games are usually accompanied by very relaxing “elevator-esque music”. A personal favorite series is Picross. It’s very addicting.

Zanac for the NES is my ultimate stress reliever. Destroying wave after wave after wave of enemies without a break is oddly soothing to me.
@Turnabout2 жыл бұрын
It will sound counterintuitive, but my all-time stress relieving retro game is the original Castlevania on the NES. I've finished it so many times, and it's so challenging that after a while it becomes meditative. Once I get into the groove I go into pure muscle memory. This feeling lasts well into the Death stage, where suddenly I have to snap back into consciousness for that final push. Great video, man.

Great shout with the PGA Tour. I'm not really a golf fan, but loved that game in the Genesis. Last year before I emigrated, myself and my friends had "Retrocathalon" and a pre-farewell party. It involved weekly practices of selected challenges before the Grand Event I cracked out my old genesis and we dedicated one full day playing through different titles and there was an overall winner at the end. We had a fighting event (Street fighter 2), Soccer event, Ice Hockey (NHL 96), rugby league, racing event (Micro Machines II, Turbo Tournament) and then the PGA Tour. Two or three of those at it had never played it before, but it was one of the favoured events! Micro Machines was built for party play so it just pipped it... Despite almost causing a few relationship breakups! Now, my games that i use to destress would be Metal Gear Solid (PS1 and GBC). Everything about these games is perfect (for their system). MSG on the playstation was groundbreaking, it was like a full movie. Whenever I'm stuck in a meeting, I often go to a different place and replay the game in my head. Cannot count how many times I have played it. Medal of Honour Underground; first dip into the WW2 genre.. I'm fascinated by WW2 and the game does a great job bringing you around to different parts of the war. Amazing voice-overs and sound effects and an amazing soundtrack. Also the last game me and my brother played through together,. He grew out of gaming soon after. Robin Hood, Legend of Sherwood. Have you played commandos? Now you can play it in a Robin Hood setting. I loved robin hood stories as a kid, and I picked this game up on the cheap when I was 15/16. It's an isometric real-time tactical game, requires a lot of patience because sometimes you will be doing the same action over again... But Christ I loved these games. Robin hood, Commandos, Desperados... I think Robin hood just tops it though. RTS game; Battle for Middle-Earth. It's LOTRs which is in itself, is almost enough. The graphics were great. The special abities took time to earn and you got a great sense of achievement when you earned them. The 4 factions had enough differences to keep you replaying it... And the fact they had a full evil campaign was fantastic. My only gripe is that the evil heroes were not as strong as the good... I could go on with this list for so long. Micro Machines, Pro Evo 2008(it was my college life, and I won most tournaments I entered), SMB 3, Battlefront II, Bugs Bunny Lost in Time, Perfect Dark (GBC), Pokemon (that's a rare gem, look it up if you get a chance...)... .. but I will end it on a perhaps, slightly more obscure game. Titanic: Adventure out of Time. It was done by a company called Cyberflix, I think they created the game on garageband and did most of the voice acting themselves. You traverse the ship trying to collect items to prevent a World War... There are multiple endings and you have to figure out how you can get each item. The game allows you to progress if you don't get a certain item, it just alters the ending. It was made around 97/98 I believe, so this was quite advanced for it's time. The ships recreation is amazing. The characters are fantastic. If you are in anyway a titanic ...enthusiast (?).. this is a game you should look into. It was the it game that me and all of my siblings enjoyed equally. Before they wound-up, the company produced a similar game in a Western setting, but I've never managed to find a copy of it. Anyway, great video. Keep up the good work!

My favorite retro relaxation games were Myst and the Legend of Kyrandia series. With Myst, I was always blown away by the rendered 3D graphics, gorgeous scenery, and beautiful soundtrack. Although mentally challenging, this one was always good for a few hours of decompression. The Legend of Kyrandia series is a nostalgic pixelated point and click fantasy adventure series that was often overshadowed by the similar looking Monkey Island series. The pixel graphic style immediately takes me back to younger days and the full voice acting is campy but well done and humorous at times.

Great video! My top 5 relaxing videos: 5) Bassin's Black Bass (snes) 4) Super Castlevania IV (snes) 3) Donkey Kong Country 2 (snes) 2) Super Metroid (snes) And now....strictly in my opinion and being completely fair: 1) Chrono Trigger (snes).....I didnt grow up very well as a child and I stayed as far away from my parents as I possibly could. I would bury myself in my room to enjoy this game for hours on end. It took me 2 months to get enough money to buy it at a cool $69.99. I love everything about it...Great story, fun and likeable characters, awesome soundtrack, and depth that only the snes could offer at that time. Not to mention the new game plus mode and multiple endings. Tons of replay value! I can't imagine anyone who is even a "semi gamer" has let this one slip by, but if you have, definitely check it out. It still holds up like a champ today. I bought the game when I was 16 years old. I'm 41 now and I love it even more than I did when I was a teenager.

Two of which are my pride and joys- 2 Neo Geo MVS 4-slot cabs and a closet filled with MVS games. I'm thinking of getting a sitdown Ridge Racer 2 cab once our room is set. I think I will create a video about my favorite top 10 games. I'll say the first one at the TOP of my list, is not playing games but I actually like to MAKE games. Programming and making games can seemed scary at first, but it's all pattern and once one gets the hang of it, it can be a LOT of fun to sit there and just build a game and build a worlds the way you want it to look and the way you want it to work and with YOUR rules, etc. Some people are scared of the programming part, but I'd say making the art, stories and music (the things that people usually LOVE doing anyway) can be more challenging once one gets the programming down. I personally like to work with code, but there are free game engines like G-Develop and Coppercube where a person doesn't even have to work with code itself. And I have tutorials on my channel if anybody is interested in learning. But, I'm going to get my top 10 video going soon.

I'm always down with a run through Zebes in Metroid or Super Metroid, and of course a link between worlds and to the past are just great. NBA jam and madden 92 are some great classic sports games I love, and accepting a few monster contracts in the Witcher 3 is always a good time. Absolutely love your channel. We grew up in the same era, and your videos take me back to a much happier time for me personally. Keep up the good work

I really appreciate the kind words. I love NBA Jam also. I never get tired of that one

I like the Paperboy series, especially NES. Calming and also reminds me of sleepovers. Jurassic Park on Sega Genesis was the best. Final Fight on Sega CD was great.

Paperboy is a relaxing game Tim! I completely agree.

One of my new favorite games to relax with is Metroid Zero Mission on Gameboy Advance. I remember struggling with the original Metroid on NES and never getting that into it, but then falling in love with the series playing Super Metroid on SNES. When I discovered the roided out reimagining of the original on GBA, it was instant love. Rediscovering Brinstar, Norfair and Tourain and exploring the areas, plus the surprise ending were the perfect distraction during this lockdown. The fact that my five year old loves it now as much as I do is the icing on the proverbial cake. While firing missiles at Mother Brain may not be as relaxing as golf or baseball, it definitely would fit into your honorable mention category alongside WWF or MK.

Zero Mission was great Rick. I completely agree.

I like to unwind with the Lego games on DS. Low brain drain, simple puzzle games. They're great to destress after a mentally hard day at work.

Lego games are always presented so well too. I enjoy them.

Great video! I hate the negative stigmatism with video games. Growing up in the mountains of NC it was always play your game but also go outside and play too, and that was awesome! Non gamers won't understand the difference between veg-out games that don't require a lot of effort or patience, and really hard, control gripping, thumb callus enducing, test of willpower and sanity type games.....there's a time and place for both. Great list dude!

Well said man. I couldn't agree more.

This is an awesome list! For me, my de-stress games were always Unreal Tournament on PC, Tetris Worlds on Xbox, Animal Crossing on Gamecube and more recently, American Truck Simulator for PC. Each one of them hits a different part of my brain. Unreal Tournament was cathartic and let me release the stresses of retail life and being bossed around; Tetris Worlds was really serene and allows me to take control of some of the chaos in my life; Animal Crossing let me (virtually) socialize and not have to worry about offending someone and making them mad; and American Truck Simulator lets me plan routes and listen to all my favorite music on the road without having to burn my own gas or put myself in any danger from traffic. I might follow your lead and make my own video on this! It does sound like fun. Thanks for the fantastic idea!

What's been really relieving my stress lately is Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It's so charming and addictive and you can spend hours just catching fish and bugs and digging up fossils and talking with neighbors. Yeah, not a retro game, but it's been relieving my stress. Oh, and Roller Coaster Tycoon FTW!

Animal Crossing has been a comfort for so many right now. Seems to be bringing a great sense of community to gaming at the moment

I've been playing NES Zelda. But, one of my favorites is Harvest Moon:A Womderful Life, on the GameCube. I was able to stay a batchelor and marry all three girls, takes two memory cards to hold the four files. The repetivness, the sounds, everything about it is relaxing. I've gotten about everything except for stuff from Mineral Town. I hope I can find a copy someday for the Gameboy Advance. Thanks for another great video Tyler. And keep gaming on!

Always great to hear from you Jeff. I've never tried a Harvest Moon title. I really to change that.

Video games have been my escape... Has been for the last thirty years. One of my favorites is Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. I don't have to stress myself to play out an entire adventure while investing days or even weeks into grinding, side quests, and figuring it all out.

I picked up that game a couple years ago on the SNES but haven't got a chance to play it yet. I've heard good things. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Since the COVID lockdown, I've been playing a ton of retro games. So far I've played Super Mario 1, 2, 3, Land (gameboy), Mario World, and lost levels. Link to the Past was obvious. I also purchased an Arcade1up TMNT cabinet. I then revisited Metroid and Zelda on NES...I even completed Rambo on NES. New games are great, but I will always reach out to the the games of old. I'm looking forward to October when I replay the Ghouls and Ghosts, Castlevania, and other Halloween inspired games.
