I remember a few years ago there was a Twins game, they were up by 7 in the 9th and got pissed off because the other team bunted in response to their defensive shift. They acted like they shouldn't have done that because the game was basically over already and the base hit he got from the bunt was meaningless, to which I asked myself "why the defensive shift then?"

@Jrseydevil
@Jrseydevil Жыл бұрын
Lemme break it down for you two clowns. The no swinging on a 3-0 rule wasn’t the pitchers rules. It was and is the BATTING teams rule. The reason is because you don’t wanna let the pitcher off the hook for being wild. It drives up the pitch count and gives you a better chance at getting a “good pitch to hit” I.e a 3-1 fastball or a get me over curve. Or a hanging slider trying to be cute. You should definitely play a sport before going online and saying stupid shit about said sport. It just makes you look like ignorant fools who don’t have any idea what theyre talking about.
@BasedAFPatriot

Debatable, if the pitcher walked the previous batters on 4 consecutive balls, you better not swing on 3-0 unless it's a *perfect* pitch (for you) to hit. That's what pretty much all my coaches told me through college. There is ALWAYS exceptions to this; for instance: tie game, bottom of 9th, bases loaded, 2 outs, then you see 3 straight balls that miss by a foot. It's 0-3, a "ball" away from the win.
@kylesloane3815
@kylesloane3815 Жыл бұрын
@@BasedAFPatriotyeah but that is a different reason. That is just being smart because the other pitcher is not in control and you have a higher chance to get on base and score runs by not swinging than by swinging. But it is still trying to win the game and beat the other team. That doesn't really have to do with the "unwritten" rules. The other team would probably be happy at you by swinging in that situation haha.
@martoto77
@martoto77 Жыл бұрын
Unwritten rules that would make just as much sense as the ones on that list: You’re not allowed to swing if the pitcher’s dog died You have to sing the national anthem before you leave the box if you get a base hit with the bases loaded. If a team is leading by more than 3 runs after the 5th inning, every remaining at bat in the game starts at 2-2. You have to raise one of the pitcher’s children as your own if you hit a HR off them in more than one game.

A felonious act to prevent a felonious act? That's brilliant!!! I'm nominating you for a Nobel prize this afternoon... How about meaningful suspensions and fines for intentional HBPs? A batter leaves the game after getting hit? Fine the pitcher the equivalent of his salary for the game. A batter misses 5 games after being hit in the head? The pitcher is suspended the same number of starts in rotation or equivalent number of innings out of the bullpen. Take away their $$$ or their playing time to get their attention.

The absence of a clock (other than that pitching timer) is something that distinguishes Baseball from almost all the other teams sports, you have all the time in the world to score the runs you need as long as you avoid getting out. "Pitchers are allowed to celebrate, pump their fist, scream in happiness after a big strikeout, so why can't hitters do the same after hitting a home run". My first thought was exactly Madison Bumgarner 😅 The "no swinging at 3-0". The Rangers in 2020 acting like babies or even Mercedes doing it as well made me laugh, but I go back to 2017 when Seager swung at 3-0, Mattingly wasn't pleased, and then Stripling threw at Stanton the very next inning. "Don't steal when leading big". I love that you brought up that 2001 Indians comeback vs the Mariners. And that number 1 rule, I love you brought it up. Baseball is all about showing athleticism and chess games. I have no issue to bunt to get on base because like you said, *YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME*

I'm not really sure what sport you play, but in baseball, we like to respect our opponent. Most of these unwritten rules are just telling people not to kick someone while they're down. The no-bunting during a no-hitter is because throwing a no hitter is very impressive. Hitting is very hard, but it's not so hard that no-hitters happen everyday. @@jamesmartin9401 In football you have misconduct, in basketball there are technical fouls, even the brutal sport of hockey has a penalty box. These all follow the same concept as the unwritten rules of baseball. What's the difference between baseball and all these sports though? Baseball is the only place where the rules are unwritten. The players took it upon themselves to dish out the discipline themselves by throwing at people. You say that throwing at people is barbaric and dangerous. More often than not, they get no more than a bruise. Even throwing at the head has become taboo as pitchers have started throwing harder. I'd say this is less dangerous than getting body slammed by an angry hockey player or a football player dropping the shoulder. Saying that I'm getting my "baby feelings" hurt is rather immature and far from the truth. Though they are unwritten, they are still rules. You're not gonna speed past a cop, then when he pulls you over claim he has "baby feelings". I'm merely standing up for what I believe is right for the sport I love.

@Idigmetal9516 ….. Sir, as I am sure you can tell from my picture I play baseball. Your assessment of unwritten rules and what they represent is much different than mine. Like most reasonable folks, I don’t advocate kicking anyone who is down…. However, to me, most of these rules don’t represent that concept at all. Some are Macho rules, such as the no crying one, or saying it’s ok to purposely hit opponent with a pitch. These are not what you or I are referring to though. The majority of the remainder of these unwritten rules are the ones you refer to. I understand your perspective, and that perspective is why these unwritten rules continue to this day…. However, to be exacting, you would be more clear if you acknowledged that some are about not showing off when you are up. I understand even Madison Bumgarner’s perspective. ( and am a huge fan of his.) some of the rules to which you are referring, to me, more accurately represent doing one’s best at their own endeavors. If I am playing a baseball game, or any game( particularly if I were playing at a Profesional level), I will have the integrity to try my best and be my best, make the smartest decisions towards winning the game. ( within the actual rules of the game, in other words, no cheating… no endangering others or being cruel, either. ) If I am not being cruel or endangering others, how am I “ kicking someone when they are down”? I was raised to do my best, and be kind and considerate. I see it like this: both are possible at once. Unless one views doing one’s best in a competition as being “ cruel” to the other opponents because they then are more likely to lose? Of course not everyone views it that way. If they did these sort of unwritten rules would go away. I find it funny that these rules are so old…. It seems more the type of thinking typically represented by millennials, or gen z! Baseball is a unique, funny, and wonderful sport! And so are most of its fans.

Honestly, #1 is the one unwritten rule I can agree with to an extent. The rationale behind it, presumably, is that if you're going to end a no-hitter/perfect game bid, you should have to do it with a "real" hit involving an actual swing of the bat. I certainly understand the counterarguments, but as a fan, I'd really hate to see a pitcher's bid for history derailed because a hitter intentionally dribbled the ball 60 feet or so while the infield happened to be playing back to defend against a regular hit.

Even as a kid starting to watch baseball I never could understand pitchers hitting batters with a pitch, specifically ones who are innocent. For instance we have team A & B and team A's star hitter gets plunked then in a later inning team A will plunk team B's star hitter in revenge even though he did nothing wrong and this is still somehow deemed acceptable.

This is one of your best videos. Thank you for calling these out. I love old school baseball, but these “rules” are so pathetic. I’m a lifelong Cards fan and love LaRussa but some of the things he says are flat out embarrassing. And Miles Mikolas’ is just a huge poser.

Damn 3 rules and I can already tell you’ve never played organized baseball. First of all the walking over the mound rule is for a bunch of reasons like if you walk across a dirt like mound with spikes on your shoes you’re gonna leave little holes all over the place which is not only dangerous (how often do you see guys fall down from hitting their own spike hole) but also can completely throw you off your rhythm. Second the no swinging at a 3-0 rule is not just with a big lead it’s pretty much in any situation to either A. Drive up the pitch count or to not let the pitcher off the hook when the batter is in control of the at bat. Third. The don’t rub it rule is about physical toughness and trying to gain and then maintain a mental edge on your opponent. Same way javon “the freak” keerse refused to wear sleeves in the winter games because it made him look more intimidating. Jesus talk about a sour first impression. Just another wanna be sports KZbinr who gets all his information from videogames and bleacher report. SMH.

Insane that swinging at a pitch when there's a certain score is against the unwritten rules, but intentionally trying to physically hurt an opposing player by throwing a baseball as hard as you can directly at their head is not.

Randy Hundley bunted unsuccessfully in the 9th inning in an attempt to break up Tom Seaver’s no-hitter. Also, in 1958 Hank Bauer twice attempted to to bunt in order to break up Hoyt Wilhelm’s no-hitter in the 9th inning.

Theory: before fences you could hit a home run if you hustled bu there was concept of a "no-doubter" because in theory they could always run it down and throw you out. The first guy to hit one so far he knew it was gonna be a "home run" then jogged around the bases celebrating which pissed everyone off about "bad sportsmanship " and here we are.

It's called respect for your opponent and the game. Current baseball commissioner Rob Manfred killed those unwritten rules for futures generations to follow when he put in the "Let the kids play" initiative so it gives players the freedom to have individual personalities, thus they can show their emotions by bat-flipping, fist pumping, vhest pounding, gazing at their home runs, excessive celebrations in the dugout and so on. Manfred felt this was the way to generate fan interest, and more TV audiences. As a baseball purists who's been watching since 1978, Rob Manfred ruined the game.

I suggest a new unwritten rule. If a pitcher intentionally throws at a batter, then the batter gets a free chance to punch the pitcher in the face. Unwritten rules are an arcahic relic from years past and serve no purpose. Posts like the one above are why baseball is appealing less and less to younger generations, because of bullshit "purity" of a bygone era.

Bunting on a no hitter sucks because everyone wants to see it happen. Including opposing teams fans. But as a player you should always be trying your best to get something going. The only time I feel like it could be iffy is if it’s like a blowout no hitter. (12 to 0 or something) and you drop a bunt with 2 out in the 9th. Then it just feels spiteful

7) If you don't want guys admiring their home runs, don't hang meat like you own a butcher show. 6) if you have a 3-0 lead and the next pitch is right in your sweet spot, what are you suppose d to do? .... and the two "don't bunt" unwritten rules. I guess these guys have never heard of the written rule that if you want an out, you must make a play and the other guys are not expected to just let you win. Ay Dios Mio!

#2 exactly happened to Miles Mikolas and Happ. The at-bat of Happ, Happ made a swing, which nailed Contreras (People are gonna say it's Happ's fault) but to be honest, it's no one's fault. Happ and Contreras exchange good sportsmanship. Then Miles heats Happ with one near his face/neck area, no warning/ejection. However, Miles intentionally threw one way out of the strikezone (by 12 INCHES) and hits Happ. Happ didn't complain, he took his base.

Yea that Yermin Mercedes situation was so stupid. In regular Joe ball, most teams don't have the capacity to come back. But these guys are professionals. Oh no he showed power in a swing while they were already up by a lot! Personally I'd rather them try to Jack more bombs than small ball me to death if I were pitching in that situation. Then it'd be a strength contest instead of a skill contest. And Mad Baum is one of the biggest sissies in the game.

my biggest gripe is the whole "don't break up a no-hitter". it's a players job to do their best for their team, not to help their opposition achieve something. pretty much all of the unwritten rules are bullshit, if it was me i wouldn't give a damn about your feelings and play my best for my team. if you let 2 homeruns through, i am sure as hell going to swing at that first pitch down the middle because you feel i shouldn't swing and just take the strike. i am going to hammer the hell out of that pitch. it's a sign of a weak player to retaliate against an opposing team because your feelings got hurt.
