It was not too long ago the show was on the air. The show aired reruns on Boomerang and last time the show was on the air was last year. Plus the show has been available to watch on Cartoon Network On Demand since last year until this January. The series is still popular to this day.

There was no mention of any specific form of media that the video tackles exclusively other than stating "outside of Marvel and DC" which doesn't exactly say/mean "Superheroes from comics outside of Marvel and DC. Such is the flimsy nature of these videos from WatchMojo.com and thus why I am not too fond of them. Besides, The Shadow has been in several media over the years, including comics. It gets confusing because, while the amphibians are a specific class of animal (including frogs and salamanders), any animal that is adapted for both moving on land and water can be called 'amphibious'. Turtles are not amphibians but they are amphibious. Mind you, I always got the impression that the TMNTs were really tortoises. ;)

It seemed like they were, since they had claws not flippers. Also, I have this memory of one of the TMNTs in the late-80s cartoon turning to the audience, breaking the fourth wall, and pretty much saying they were technically tortoises.

There is an episode of the 2003 TMNT cartoon which showed the event of how the turtles and Splinter became mutated, and it seems that the guys looked more like terrapins than turtles or tortoises. Also, there were dinosaur aliens in the show that kept calling them terrapins, albeit I think in a derogatory manner

Turtles are reptiles not amphibians and yes there are huge differences between them. Google the differences, I can't list them all because I'd be here all day if I did but the biggest difference is that reptiles always look like what they are when they hatch where amphibians change and look nothing like the adults. (Think frogs and tadpoles.)

As much as I love the TMNT, I never considered them to be superheroes. Mutation via green ooze aside, they really don’t have any supernatural powers or abilities. They just learned to be ninjas, and have some added talents thanks to their being, you know, turtles. Most of their powers are standard ninja-fare, and to be honest, there are a number of human ninjas that are more “super ninja” than they are. You could actually argue that the elves in Elfquest, with all of their magical/supernatural abilities, are more in line with the concept of “superhero” than the TMNT.

And this makes them different from the likes of Batman? Superpowers aren't required to become a superhero. You just need to be able to perform acts of heroism that are well above that of an average person.

If we consider superpowers things that normal human's can't do then the TMNT have them, they have armored torsos and can hide their head and limbs inside them. Compared with human ninjas they are exceptionally strong, agile and tough and can recover better from injuries (but nothing like Wolverine or Deadpool). As turtles they are also exceptional swimmers and can hold their breath for several minutes.

For anyone who says that manga/anime characters don’t count, all manga are comics. The word “manga” literally translates to ”comic.” And in Japan, they refer to cartoons from other countries as anime as well as their own animated shows. In conclusion, all manga superheroes are comic book superheroes and should be considered.

There's so many awesome superheroes, and comics in general outside of DC and Marvel. I work at a comic shop on sundays and it seems like every single person who comes in wants either DC or Marvel. It drives me crazy. That sucks you couldn't mention characters in vertigo comics. That means no Constantine, Sandman, or Swamp Thing =/ Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention The Crow.
