Oh wow they are sooooooo wrong about the fire. Dry wood burns easier, hotter and more efficiently. That means MINIMUM smoke. To make smoke you throw damp wood or green leaves on an already burning fire. The steam drops the temperature of the burn, reduces the efficiency and increases the amount of smoke. Dry gets it going. Damp makes it smokey.

the easiest way to determine edibility in plants is the 4 step test. step one rub on hand, wait one hour. if reactions occurs plant is poison. if no reaction move to the next step. step two rub on lips wait two hours. watch for tingling or burning or swelling etc. step three chew a small bite but dont swallow spit it out wait 6 hours. if no reaction move to next step. step four chew and swallow a small bite of the questionable plant wait 24 hours. if no reaction plant is edible. this test is incredibly time consuming but completely fool proof. can be used on roots bark leaves roots pretty much anything.

This video is going to get people killed. *Dry wood burns too efficiently to make thick smoke. You need damp or green wood for that. *A lean to is not adequate shelter. It might help trap heat on a dry, windless day, but as they state, the wind is your enemy, and it's far from dry if it starts to rain. Better to stack logs and branches into two angled walls and fasten a tarp or cloth over them, this will hold heat much better, and protect against the wind and rain. *rubbing sticks together is HARD. You need the right type of wood, and a LOT of practice to get the technique right. you'd have better luck finding flint or a similar sparking stone. *Cactus water is highly TOXIC due to the biological processes of the cactus.

Christ, the fire-making tips are what someone would say as a joke. "Create sparks by using a magnifying glass or a mirror", "bang two rocks together or rub two sticks together". First of all, you're not going to be able to start a fire using a mirror. The reason a powerful magnifying glass works is by focusing a beam of sunlight onto dry tinder to heat it up enough to combust. You're not going to get any sparks, and a mirror only serves to reflect light, not focus it into a beam. Banging rocks together won't work either. Yeah, you'll maybe get the occasional spark that's hot enough to ignite some tinder, but only with certain types of rocks and not very often. If you want to use a rock, get a piece of flint and use a carbon steel 'steel' to strike it to create a spark. It's the carbon-rich pieces of steel that come off red hot, not the flint. The flint only serves as a sharp object that can loose a particle of steel from the steel and heat it up via friction. Also, just rubbing 2 sticks together is going to get you absolutely fucking nowhere. If you actually want to start a fire using sticks, just learn how to make a bowdrill. You prefaced the video by saying you're not wilderness experts, And I don't expect you to be, but how about doing 5 minutes of research before a video, or even better, don't actually give tips on things you don't know anything about and rather just explain the usefulnes of fire-making and compell people to learn methods. Don't just come up with methods that don't work. You're spreading dangerous misinformation. Also- no warning to people about not making signal-fires in arid environments? That's one way to start wildfires.

I would switch #1 with shelter seeking/building; also, its amazing how important staying dry is to survival. Survivals 'Rules of Three": 1) You can survive three minutes without breathable air (unconsciousness) generally with protection or in icy water 2) You can survive three hours in a harsh environment (extreme heat or cold). 3) You can survive three days without drinkable water. 4) You can survive three weeks without food.

TO FIND THE NORTH STAR: 1) Find the big dipper 2) close one eye and hold out your thumb moving it closer or farther until it spans the distance between the two stars at the end of the dipper. 3) use those two stars to draw a line, the north star is now the width of your hand away from the top of the big dipper. Polaris (the North Star) is NOT the brightest star in the sky, the brightest star in the sky is Sirius. But while knowing which direction you're going helps you to navigate relative to where you started, it doesn't help you figure out where you are or where you're going. Finding Latitude: One can easily determine latitude. Any star will consistently reach the same highest point in the sky. Its height in the sky changes with the observer's latitude. This concept was known and widely used from very ancient times. In the Northern Hemisphere the North Star was/is a popular choice. The angle the North Star makes with the horizon is the same as the observer's latitude. Finding Longitude: Because one day is 24 hours long one can easily use time to calculate longitude. One hour of time difference corresponds to 15° of longitude (360°/24 hours = 15°/hour). Suppose an observer sets his accurate watch to 12:00 at noon in Greenwich, England and then travels a great distance. The observer then notices that the sun is highest in the sky at 4:00 according his watch. The observer then knows he is at longitude 60° W (4 hours ×15°/hour = 60°). It should be pointed out that “noon” in general does not mean 12:00 PM. Rather, it is the time when the sun is highest in the sky. Because of the use of timezones the sun will be highest in the sky from about 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM local time for an observer. If longitude is known, the time of astronomical noon can be calculated. For example, Lincoln, NE, is at longitude 96.7° W. 96.7°/(15°/hour)=6.4467 hours. Being Central Time, Lincoln is 6 hours away from Greenwich Mean Time, so astronomical noon is (6.4467 - 6) hours = 0.4467 hours = 26.8 minutes from 12:00. Thus “noon” in Lincoln, Nebraska is about 12:27 PM (1:27 PM during daylight savings).

Polaris is NOT anywhere near the brightest star!!! Wow. You guys did not do your research. The big dipper is a lot easier to spot than the little dipper. Use the two pointer stars on the end of the "cupped" side of the dipper. Draw a line starting from the star at the bottom of the cupped side end through the star at the top of the cup side end. You'll reach a star that is comparable in brightness to those pointer stars you just used, approximately 3-4 times the distance you just traveled between the two pointer stars. Wow.

My survival tip... While out hiking, carry a neck knife. While solo hiking I slipped down a steep hill and managed to pick up quite a velocity and I crashed through a wooden fence and snagged my backpack on a part of the fence, the strap of my back pack managed to loop around my neck, my own body weight still wanted to pull me down, tighten the strap and began to strangle me. My only knife to hand was the Swiss Army Knife I had around my neck, it seemed to take forever to locate the sheath, take the knife out, flip the blade while not being able to breath. I managed to cut the strap that was strangling me just in time. It was only a after thought to carry my Swiss army knife around my neck, I got talking to some hikers the day before and noticed one of them with a neck knife and thought it was a good idea. Lucky, as my Swiss Army Knife normally lives in my back pack, way out of reach. Now I use a fixed blade neck knife ( ESEE IZULA), with knotted Para cord hanging from the handle, so it's even quicker to find and use in a similar emergency.
@RaindropsBleeding
@RaindropsBleeding 7 жыл бұрын
why not just clip your knife to the inside of your pants pocket? Easy to find, easy to grab, and not likely to stab or strangle you. Most collapsible blades today have a clip along the handle which allows you to securely slide it inside a pocket or onto a belt. I agree, never go anywhere without a knife, but putting anything around your neck is generally a bad idea unless it can't snag on things and comes with a quick release mechanism just in case, which is why all hiking back packs are supposed to have clips on their straps so that when just such an incident occurs, you can simply un-clip the strap. No need for the knife.

One of the reasons why I "personally" don't have my knife on my belt while hiking (I carry a Mora Clipper these days) is because my pack waist lumber support strap gets in the way, what I do as well as the neck knife is carry a Leathermans multitool clipped inside my trouser pocket

Depending on the bear, you don't. I live in the Smoky Mountains and we have black bears, they aren't very big but still dangerous. A bear's weak point is its nose, a bear has a thick layer of fat and fur almost everywhere except its nose. punching a bear in the top of the nose is the quickest way to get through to it that its attentions are not appreciated. More importantly though, if you are crossing paths with a bear you should seem as tall and loud as possible, if you have children hoist them up on your shoulders and shout or sing a song loudly. If that doesn't work you should lie down and curl up into a ball. Remember, do not try to fight a bear unless you have absolutely no other choice and NEVER run from a bear, they look fat and cuddly but they run about 25 mph on average. If it is a grizzly or brown bear you can climb a tree, however black bears are very good climbers. Respect wildlife and remember that humans didn't rise to the top of the food chain because of our kung fu skills, hitting an animal is mostly just going to piss it off.
@chickentendies4395

If it's a black bear. You'better fight back. They are more likely to leave you alone if you hurt it. So kick it on the nose. If it's a brown bear. Curl up and cover your vital organs. And hope he leaves you alone. But that is all worst case senario. It's best to start off by making yourself tall and start screaming. Or if you're susan boyle. You sing!

Wow, yeah that disclaimer about "not being experts" was really appropriate. A signal fire needs to be burning well with dry wood, then put green branches preferably from an evergreen, or anything really sappy, that creates thick dense clouds of white smoke. Also you need more than one fire 3 fires in a triangle about 30 yards (27m) apart is a clear internationally recognized distress signal.

#1 - Rely on technology before any of this shit. Buy a waterproof satellite phone, GPS, and portable solar charger. All of which can fit nicely in a hiking pack. If those 3 items fail you, then rely on this guide.

Bear-ly It's not that expensive. I realize owning a sat phone is kind of crazy for a lot of people, that's why you can rent them from numerous places. Hell, Verizon will mail you one for $9 per day. Small price to pay if you're going to be in the middle of nowhere. The solar chargers make good investments and also aren't that expensive. Among the cheapest USB chargers is one that's only $80 and will charge any device with a USB port and the charge can also act as a flashlight. GPS trackers are also varied in price, but I've seen them as low as $90. The average price for a decent one is around $250. But these are one time purchases, so it's something to save up for and then you own it forever.

I relied on a solar charger for a 6 day 5 night backpacking trip. of course it was overcast every day so I never got a charge on that battery lol. was out of power after day 3 on both of my phone's which I was using as a GPS. but I was on trails and had the area I was at memorized and had multiple points of reference just with peaks alone so there was no chance of me getting lost. but yeah, a solar charger is only good if you are actually getting some sunshine ;)
@gyro-disregardian
@gyro-disregardian 7 жыл бұрын
Tim Eubanks I'm actually very curious in how solar power works, if it uses light to make energy, would a fire light create energy or if it's the stuff that comes with sunlight that creates energy. (also I know energy can't really be created or destroyed only changed but too lazy to correct ;p)

For those who may not know what the basics of an emergency/bug out bag let me get you started. Don’t expect to buy this all at once unless you have some cash on deck. Do it one or two items at a time. 1)a good fixed blade knife 2) a collapsible fishing line you can buy a kids basic rod with basic lures and hooks at most Walmart. Tell them you’re catching blue fish, that should lead you to a strong enough rig to survive with. 3) flint. Amazon has it. 4) duct tape. Even though it’s not something people normally list it is super handy. 5) a first aid kid or if you can’t fit it or afford it, anti diarrhea, anti vomit, antihistamine single packs, and gauze, with some alcohol (which doubles as a fire helper). 6)Boating line. Not just rope or cables BOATING LINE. It’s strong, tough, and will almost never fail 7) meal replacement shake power. Take them out of the big containers they come in and put them in a bag and use a rolling pin on it to flatten them out. 8) A tent is nice BUT I find that sometimes they take a while to set up for newbies so get yourself some of those blue plastic tarps from Home Depot. I’ve made perfect tents in under 10 minutes with some rope and a couple tarps. 9)something to boil water in. No ceramics. Has to be metal, and rust resident. 10) get yourself some sort of projectile launching device. An air rifle, a bow and arrow, a sling shot, if you’re lucky enough to not live in an anti gun state like me get a .22 rifle or a good 12 gauge. As long as it’ll kill a bird or small critter it’ll work. 11) last but not least. Bring something you enjoy that’s quiet. A book, a deck of cards, for me I keep an old set of drum sticks that I just play on my knees with when I’m bored. Now this is just a basic starter list. You can add stuff but remember you need to be and to carry it.

If you are hiking in the desert, you should bring some plastic sheeting (a garbage bag would do in a pinch) and a bowl or other container. Dig a hole, put bowl in middle & surround it with cut-up cactus. Cover hole w/ the plastic, held down around perimeter w/ rocks. Put one rock in the middle, over the bowl. Water will evaporate from the cactus, trickle down the sheeting into the container.

1. Once you get a fire going, wet branches will create far better smoke (well steam really) than dry branches. The wetter the better. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but like I said: only when the fire is going and it's not really smoke, it's steam. But it's still highly visible. As opposed to dry wood with minimal smoke and no steam. 2. If you cannot name a plant by sight, don't eat it: or use it as toothpaste. Even if you have an ID book, beware. It's all too easy to make a plant fit the description in the book. AKA seeing what you want to see. 3. It's not that easy to make a fire without matches or a lighter. Backing: I am a boy scout (eagle scout actually) and my scoutmaster who taught me this was a survival instructor in the marines.

So jumping down a waterfall or swimming through ice water with your clothes on is surviving? More like a shortcut to the grave. He is just sensational, the stunts he performs in his shows are way more dangerous then the situation itself. The way how he catches animals and eats them alive and raw? That's one way to get you killed. Plus he is trained by the Navy, so everything he does in his shows is not "basic survival". I don't know anyone who can safely to climb a scarp without having mountain climbing skills.
