Mr. Jake Mace, you might never read this, but I just wanted to share with you that I have been using this video in my classroom every Friday for the past 5 years. The kids love their "Tai Chi Friday" and look forward to it the whole week. It became a tradition in my classes. We kept the tradition even now during our online learning. Kids tell me, sometimes this is the only time they get out of the computer and move.

I'm a diabetic with a multitude of health problems, including balance/vertigo, severe obesity, back spasms and swollen, inflamed knees. These beginners exercises are just enough to keep me fit, without exacerbating my preexisting conditions. So glad I found this video. Thanks!

I started Tai Chi about a month ago as I had become very clumsy. My balance is already improved and I am thirsty to learn more. I will be 74 in July and I plan on being better balanced by then than I was ten years ago.

I love this. Beautiful music, calming water and the Instructor just gets into it. No annoying intros or exaggerated movements.

I've done this just once with my mother via dvd, and am now researching and looking into trying it regularly. With lower back problems, what attracts me is the regular slow, controlled movement and gracefulness. I used to ballroom dance and loved it. The smoother the dance the more I liked it and music can make or break my day, so I appreciated the music choice in this video. Well done video. Thank you for posting.

I've probably watched this video 40 times. I have a morning tai chi habit now. I've actually gotten to a point where I look forward to my tai chi in the mornings after my workouts, where at first it was a challenge to be consistent. Super grateful for this video!

Thank you so much for these beautifully presented lessons. The way you "dance" the postures and movements--just kind of catches me up into them very naturally and simply. I feel wonderful after doing just a few. I see how your whole body moves through them, as though every part of the body is aware, all moving as one. How you have conveyed that in a video is lovely--uncluttered, beautiful background; good lighting; appropriate music that does not distract but blends simply; your clothing does not obscure the movements; your concentration and centeredness comes through. You teach much, in a little. No unnecessary anything in the picture. Looks like I will be dancing with you for some time to come. I will check out your other videos, as well. Hey Jake! I started doing tai chi more than 2 years ago ... this is the first video I used. And I've checked out a lot more of your videos. I'm still doing it. It's good for my body ... and my mind ... especially these days ... I go out early and do 20 minutes every day outside (away away from everybody). Thanks!

You have 2 believe in the art and yourself. Without that u well be defeated. I twisted my leg in 2016 to the point 2 wear i could not feel my knee for a couple days of it wasn't for this video i commented to im sure I would of been in worse shape.

"has the physicality to pull it off" This is not gymnastics. You don't need "physicality" to do taichi. Anyone can do it, if done properly.

I've been scouring around various you tube clips for the last 2 hours. A lot to see and I was starting to feel this might be too complicated after all. Most of the video clips were hard to follow and stay focused but Jake's movement in these 10 posture was so easy to follow, it was crisp and clean. I'm motivated again to pursue this.

+Taichi Master and you refer to yourself as a master? One of the first tenants of Taoism is to be free of ego, apparently you missed that one? Many styles of Tai Chi? Actually there are not that many, what there are though are many people like this fake selling stuff to people that IS NOT Taiji Chuan. If you ever get to Maryland look me up and you can come to my school and I will teach you what REAL Tai Chi looks like.

+Taichi Master you still have no clue to the history of Tai Chi do you Mr. Master. There were five original styles, Yang & Chen being the most dominant, with Wu, Sun & Woo following. So if you can count the 5 ORIGINAL styles then all of these other styles that posers like you support are not Taiji Chuan are they? These other forms that you seem to be confused about are actually Qigong. Nice try but for a so called Master I would have expected more.

i have a question , the i want to start tai chi and gi qong is because i want start doing crazy shit like shaolin munks do like body hardening and healing powers i just want to have chi/ki like that these moves in the video don't seem to cut it, the question is do you have any suggestions

Thank you so much for your lesson. I am recovering from an arm injury where I am not supposed to weight bear but I should move it. This is lovely for peace of mind and fluidity of movement again in my life.

I see you put this on in 2014....but I just found it and it is wonderful. I have never done Tai Chi before . but have taught Yoga and dance all my life . I am older ( 74 yrs ) and this routine is perfect. you've done a wonderful. clear simple routine....great video

I appreciate this instructor's approach far more than any other I've come across. Why? Because he doesn't talk it is so unnecessary and all the others just don't keep quiet. The whole point of Tai Chi is to embrace your body and silence your mind...Thank you Jack for sharing this....

i used to get angry about all the negative comments about these vids from people who can't back up their accusations - so many fingers pointed from behind a veil of anonymity; then i realized these people only HELP, as there cannot BE positive energy withOUT negative energy.. ie: if it weren't for idiots, geniuses wouldn't have an advantage - and i'm pretty sure the genius has a kung fu school and business teaching Tai Chi... thanks for turning my frustration into a smile. Kudos, Jake.

I discovered this video as I started Tai chi chuan a few months ago. I like very much the calming effect on the mind as we keep practising. The beauty of the movements as a dance although it is a martial art. Very peaceful the garden in the back. Keep watching it often. The music is great too.

theshaw2000 evidence is in the video itself. Just look at 1:15 when he pushes. The arched back is a clear lack of understanding of the art... closed mingmen as some would say. This would be just the first point to start with, he fails in a basic of the basics but proclaims himself as a teacher (if not master). Oh, and on the other hand, learn to ask for evidences politely.

hi Jake my name is John and I'm a karate instructor for 37 years I just want to let you know when there was covid I got stuck there in the Philippines for 20 months it was tough there but I watched your videos and enlighten me I needed some type of outlet in peace in my life so I studied all your Tai Chi and when I finally left the Philippines and came back to America I integrated it with my martial arts and I started teaching it I think you are a great Tai Chi instructor you're an inspiration to me because if I think I didn't watch your videos when I was in the Philippines there I wouldn't have made it back so thank you again for being a great instructor God bless you and be safe senseiI Johnny..

It's a good introduction for beginners, although I have the following suggestions that hopefully might be of help: In general, the width of stance doesn't need to be so wide, most Tai Chi teachers advocate a shoulder width stance (i.e. distance between the shoulder joints themselves). This encourages more "sinking of the weight" rather that tensing of thigh muscles. Posture 3: the wave flow movement is good, but the rear leg knee alignment could result in knee damage over time. The hip, knee and ankle joints should be aligned to avoid knee joint twisting. The front leg knee is also bending too far, this again can put excessive strain on knee joint. The emphasis should be on sinking the weight through the hips to the feet, rather than flexing legs too much and overloading the knees. Posture 6: bend of elbow is too sharp, the arms should keep a rounded feel and less angular. This softens the posture, allows deeper relaxation and therefore increased blood flow. It's nice that you're introducing Tai Chi to your Kung Fu followers though, but having practised both for over 10 years of each I can say that at first coming from Kung Fu to Tai Chi there is a tendency for more extended postures, lower stances and more "shape". However, after several years of undoing/unlearning that tendency I started to soften and deepen the relaxation within the postures. The sooner you get away from too much external expression and move toward internal feeling and connecting with the ground the better. It takes a lot of daily practice over many years to begin releasing body tension, often deeper and more subtle than we first think. It's this internal work that characterises Tai Chi and gives it the tremendous health benefits to the practitioner. Obviously, excellent Kung Fu can also provide considerable health benefits to the practitioner who achieves good overall balance between the soft and hard nature of their particular style.

Miriam Quintanilla hi Miriam, thank you for your comment. I think Jake makes very professional videos and he is obviously very passionate about martial arts and fitness. Videos can help with getting some basic ideas, and also make you aware of other approaches etc. However, in my opinion there is really no substitute for learning directly from a very experienced and knowledgeable Tai Chi teacher and developing the practice with other students as well as your own daily solo practice. There is a tremendous amount you can do on your own once you have a good grasp of the fundamental principles and the form postures and transitions are of a sufficiently acceptable level. it's not just learning a choreography or a different type of exercise. Tai Chi is a deeply transformative practice that you discover slowly over a long time, there is really no end to it. Of course, not everyone will want to go into it so much. Not everyone can dedicate the time to really discover the essence of this wonderful art. I only really scratch the surface, but it helps me tremendously. Occasionally, but rarely, I have experienced some of the true wonders of Tai Chi, and it is that experience that inspires me to continue practising and look to improve despite my failings. My advice would always be to find a good teacher and invest some time and a bit of money in learning the principles and foundations of good Tai Chi form (solo practice) together with some two person energy, sensitivity exercises via gentle and respectful push hands practice. The trick is finding a good teacher and school that suits your particular needs. I have been lucky in my life to have had been taught for about 8 years by one exceptional Tai Chi teacher, although I did learn a bit from others it wasn't until I was introduced to a particular school in London in around 1988 that I really started to learn about the art. A little over 30 years later I am still learning, although to my own detriment I haven't been consistent in my practice during all that time. So, I still consider myself a beginner and I once again find myself in need of a good teacher to help me progress and develop my Tai Chi to a higher level, which for me is primarily about health. In the meantime I read some classic Tai Chi books, practice daily and help show the basics to a couple of friends who want to learn or improve their Tai Chi but have less experience than me. Having said that, we are all learning together. I also learn from them. I'm hoping to get together with a very experienced Tai Chi teacher in the UK, who I met at another Tai Chi school about 26 years ago, once the current travel restrictions are lifted etc. I currently live in Madrid and practise with different people and teachers in park groups. This has been good to try different styles and experience different methods of practice. I hope my reply has been of some help and I wish you joy and success on your path towards discovering more about Tai Chi. Kind regards, Mark

@@aliciamalouff3486 hi Alicia, I think books can help with gaining some insights into Tai Chi, but not to start learning as a beginner. There are some good KZbin channels for beginners, which you could supplement with reading a little bit. It depends on why you want to learn Tai Chi and whether you have any preferences of style. That said, you could start to learn some basic principles and practise some fundamental exercises from a book called "The essential movements of Tai Chi" by John Kotsias. It's very good for beginners and improvers alike, but it doesn't teach you a Tai Chi form. However, it will give you a solid foundation to prepare to learn a form, ideally from a teacher, but possibly on KZbin. My personal preference is the Cheng Man Ch'ing form, but that's only because it's the one I have most experience in practising. I think it's an excellent form to learn the principles. There are other forms and styles that can be equally beneficial. If you would like to try and learn the Cheng Man Ching (sometimes written as Zheng Manqing, CMC or ZMQ), then there are some excellent beginners' videos on the channel Innercourttaiji. For a more general introduction to Taiji, I can also recommend the level 1 workout video on the website sinclairinternalarts.com which you can also find here on KZbin. (PS. I hope Jake doesn't mind me recommending these here)

I like how focused yet calm you look! Tai Chi is good when your have a busy 'overloaded' mind and find it hard to switch off. The movements require your full attention, otherwise you get it wrong yet it so gentle and flowing that you forget about everything else. My favourites are Zen Walking and 24 forms Yang style.

the Thing is that he has no clue about tai chi... that has nothing to do with hate... it's just shameful. he is doing all the mistakes you would learn to avoid in the your first year of practice. to anybody, Even a beginner of tai chi it very very very very clear that this man has no idea what he is doing. it doesn't give me a feelings of hate, but I simply feel sorry for everybody involved in this

Aamna Here honestly... the list is long... in the first movement he is bending his wrist to much, which causes a closing, or energetic blockage. it's a fundamental rule not to do that and it indicates stiffness and overall tension in the body... I'm not going to watch this again but, to give you some background information... withing preparatory exercises of any tai chi style you'll come across the term "song" embedded in evercises to release the unnecessary tension. if this is not given you are violating fundamental rules which have to followed in order for your tai chi to unfold the deeper aspects of it's beauty. This guy in the video obviously didn't get through basic training. in other videos you'll see that he closes his "Ming men" , the so called gate of life, a habit which is supposed to be eradicated by standing practices for BEGINNERS, by arching his lower back. another thing is that a lot of the time his moment is internally not generated by the center, which again is something that a proper tai chi teacher would show you before you do fancy forms. there is also video where he demonstrates some qi gong moment in way that makes it obvious that he never received fundamental yang style tai chi training, and still, he selling dvd's on that. I could go on and on and that's the reason why people who are actually familiar with the art get upset. of course he seems nice and all, physically fit, with a nice garden but the vareity of things he claims to be able to teach is simply ridiculous... just go through the comments and you'll see that even people who just picked up tai chi are wondering.Anyway... have a lovely day!

I feel you need to put more description in for the beginners. Knowing when to breathe is great and all, but knowing where and how to properly position your body seems a bit more important. I prefer to watch a video and be able to do the movements along with them the first time around, not intensely watching it to make sure I'm not messing up my stance while trying to have a calming workout.

Waterbending was based on tai chi, yes. Fire bending was Shaolin, airbending was baguazhang, and Earthbending (except Toph, who used a mantis style) was hung gar.
