I personally enjoy the story of Yuki-Onna, a Japanese ghost who arrives with snowstorms. Her breath is cold as ice and can freeze anything. Some say she's the spirit of a woman who died in a blizzard in the mountains, while others say she's the Princess of the Moon who came down during a snowstorm to look around, but couldn't get back home afterwards.

A banshee is often described as a terrifying spectre or spirit Spectre and spirits are both synonyms for ghosts
@siennakeeghan77646 жыл бұрын
She is usually the spirit of a woman who either deeply loved or hated the family. They stick to their family and so yes she actually is a ghost.
@tanandalynch94416 жыл бұрын
not 100% accurate A banshee is a terrible female spirit that screams and wails to signify the death of someone close to you. She is often a haggard old woman that washes laundry in a riverbank. If you hear her cries either you or someone you know will die oon Banshees also are said to have combs that they leave behind. Picking them up is bad luck thus it is bet to leave any random comb you see on the streets alone for it could belong to a banshee
@sarahgray4306 жыл бұрын
Tanada Lynch: You seem to have conflated the Ban Sidhe with the Bean Nighe. Both are Sidhe (Celtic fairies) that warn of impending doom, but where the Bean Nighe washes bloody clothes she is represented as having webbed feet and dressed in green the Ban Sidhe is more humanlike and is commonly said to dress in white, black or in red, and is believed to be an ancestress or protectress of the family to which she appears (as many old Irish and Scottish families claim descent from the Sidhe) and her keening is said to denote her sorrow at having to see another one of her relatives die, while she (as an immortal Sidhe) will live on and never enter Heaven to join them!

FUNNY STORY TIME. So in 8th grade my friends and I were doing the Bloody Mary thing but my friend Kelly decided to do it with Biggie Smalls (like in South Park) because she thought it would be hilarious. Unbeknownst to all of us (including Kelly) she somehow managed to cut the insides of her nose because she had scabs because it was the middle of winter and it was dry. So once she said Biggie Smalls the third time a TON of blood fell out of her nose. I’m not exaggerating it was like a faucet and it got everywhere and I have never heard a group of girls scream louder in my entire life. Easily the funniest thing that ever happened to me looking back

My gran spent her youth in Ireland before her family moved to Glasgow. While in Ireland, at around 14 years of age her aunt was dying, the room was full of family and friends, they heard a long shrieking wail like nothing from this earth, everyone in the street heard it, a few minutes later her aunt passed away.She was never the type to make up stories, and only had a few paranormal experiences in her life. Another one was her older brother, he had been to the theatre where a fire started, there was a stampede bc everyone panicked. He was apparently one of the lucky ones, he returned home late and went straight to bed, my gran needed the loo so had to get up and walk down what she described as a cold dark damp alleyway, she seen her brother walking ahead of her and called on him to wait for her as she was scared, she knew something was wrong but but couldn't quite put her finger on it. He was walking slowly as if in a trance so she ran towards him and he dissipated just as he caught up to him. In actual fact he had died in the stampede and his body was returned to the family so they could hold a wake. She was terrified to realise she had been shouting to her brothers spirit, also very sad, she was only young, around 6 or 7 I think.

Personally, I like the legend of The Sobbing Ghost from Long Beach Island, New Jersey. She was supposedly the daughter of the leader of a crew of wreckers, land-bound pirates that use lights to lure ships to crash on rocks so they can loot the bodies that wash ashore. One day, when helping her father with his grisly work, she finds that her beloved was aboard the ship he had just wrecked. First her heart broke, then her mind and finally her body. And they say to this day she wanders the beaches of Long Beach Island at night sobbing over the loss of her true love.

the maid at Stanley hotel was not electrocuted she was caught in an explosion the Stanley Hotel was one of the first hotels to have electricity at that time and during a storm the electricity went out so still being connected to gas the maid went up to one of the rooms to go light one of the lanterns and due to a gas leak when she lit the match the gas filled room ignited but yes she did still survive. another interesting thing about the Stanley Hotel is that when Jim Carrey was filming Dumb and Dumber he was staying at the Stanley Hotel which was the main hotel in the movie and he was staying in the star room which was mentioned in the video for a single night and then came down to the lobby the next day and told them that he would no longer like to stay in that hotel and would not give a reason why

"Perhaps the most famous headless horseman is probably from Sleepy Hollow".... TF2........
@labelledamedumanor48764 жыл бұрын
In Ireland, there is a form of Headless Horseman called the Dullahan. Anyone unlucky enough to spot him will either have a basin of blood flung at him/her or have his/her eyes lashed out of his/her head by his whip which is made of a human spine. The Dullahan also does the same job as the Banshee, whoever's name he calls out is doomed to die, there is a story where a townsman encounters the Dullahan & covers up his ears when he sees that the apparition is about to call out a name, the following day he learns of a neighbour's untimely demise. Another story tells of a man who murdered his wife & children & apparently kept the fact well hidden but a vengeful Dullahan hunted him down & gave him his just desserts.

In my town, there's a legend of a train that was in an accident sunken underneath a pond where a train station once stood. deep in the swamp area there is an old train tunnel, and people say you can hear the screams of people and banging around the tunnel. When we were kids, we'd dare each other to go down there and see. I did it once, NEVER AGAIN.

Good write up on the Banshee. Girl is so often wrongfully accused as being evil or malevolent herself. She's just a messenger and, herself does no real harm.

Here's the thing though, my Grampa on his mothers side come from Irish heritage and when I was around 15 (I'm 23 now at the time of writing) I was cycling across the "old" Severn Bridge crossing from England to Wales with my younger sister and I hear my name screamed twice by what I believe was a Banshee (my sister was in front of me) and she was making her presence known to me as I I felt a warm and comforting feeling cross me.. Banshees are not all that bad, I believe they are protective of young souls too

joeladamson meh the original story is that whenever you see the ship on sea your ship will suffer the same fate as them, death. so yeah people were pretty much afraid of death. also becoming part of a ship doesn't seem very appealing to me....

Since I was three sleepy hollows was my favourite movie (I haven't watched it in years) my mum told me that I'd stare off into the distance sometimes and gibber horse man horse man! Apparently I was brought to a party once and started it and later on in the week someone's dad who was at the party passed away 🤷🏻♀️ I see the shadow a lot tbh and when ever he's mentioned the air around me drops in temperature 😂 like as soon as he was mentioned in this the air in my room stilled and I got goose bumps straight away! I still love the headless horse man tale and to make matters worse I developed a love for horses at a young age and I'm always always drawn to black shires or cobs.

Just to clarify on the Banshee, I have two points. 1) Bean Sí (Pre 1940s spelling Bean Sídhe) doesn't mean fairy woman, it means woman of the sí. The sí is the fairy mound/court, and refers to pre-celtic burial mounds, which in Gaelic culture came to symbolise the powers of the old gods of the land, who over the centuries were diminished to the fairies as Christianity came to dominence. I suppose that is a bit technical but my point is that sí refers to a place, not the creatures that live there. 2) The Banshee is usually considered a benevolent spirit. Her screech is her cry of mourning for the man who is to die. Only certain families have Banshees to weep for them, mostly the descendents of high kings. She is considered a comfort by some as it lets mortals know that they are watched over and that their pain is shared. Some have drawn the comparison that the Banshee is a benevolent reflection of death while the Dullahan is a malevolent one, with his buckets of blood and whip made of a human spine. I don't know to that, only that I've never heard a negative story of a Banshee here in Ireland except while watching American or British shows.

The Bloody Mary episode of Supernatural is genuinely scary. It scares me whenever I watch it. It also reminds me of The Ring a bit. But the ending is really clever. Also, there is a lot of debate over who "Bloody Mary" is based on, Queen Mary is just one of them.

The flying Dutchman is not a ship but its captain, either Lorenz van der Dekken or Berhard Fokker depending on which version of the legend you believe.
