100% agree that Trailblazer: The John Muir Trail is an amazing game. Thematic? Not so much. Scenery in a "hiking" game does not theme make. It's a cube pusher. A good one, but still a themeless Euro

I wouldn’t discount scenery in a game about enjoying the great outdoors. Scenery is kinda a big point in hiking, otherwise folks would just hit the treadmill for challenge and expertise. I mean, in the same point, Terrorscape didn’t come with player knives either. 😉

It seems that theme is often mistaken for great art in the game. There are so many nature themed games with beautiful art but mechanics that are just abstracted from the theme. I would say that theme comes from the mechanics and not the art.
