As an adult you begin to realize how the portrayal of female characters in Disney are a reflection of how women were treated in that time period, or at least what societal values there are. From Snow White representing the issues of the Great depression, Cinderella post-war consumerism, Tiana Barack Obama's presidency, The Blue Fairy being a mother figure for a story having a World War 2 allegory, Belle and Mulan reflecting the girl power movements, and most 2000s heroines having #relatable quirkiness you can see how each era is a time capsule

Historical inaccuracies may be true with the Pocahontas, but I admire the creative liberties that Disney took. Plus, the message it conveys is important, epitomized the most through Colors of the Wind, which is a beautiful song.

@@rainbowrunner1550 I like that song too and I also like The Crucible even though that did the same thing in the movie Abigail Williams was 19 but in real life she was 11 and they killed her because she and her cousin were super flexible and she had an eye infection that turned her eyes red the point I'm saying is while the movies based on these Tales are entertaining and there's nothing wrong with liking them we need to acknowledge the truth of them the real Pocahontas and Abigail are victims who both died young and we need to remember that but if the movies inspire you despite being inaccurate that's okay too

@laraduff4949 I feel like Ariel was the bridge between two generations of Disney princesses. The stories of the first generation primarily revolved around meeting a man and getting married. However, the princesses of the 90s Renaissance mostly thought that, while romantic love was nice to have, it was unnecessary for a happy life. Ariel started out in the latter category, but, once she met Eric, she fell into the former. She also stands out, because she gets all that she wants, despite doing everything wrong to get there. I love all Disney Princess movies as the same but now I older I see all of the ladies as role models and not just princesses people say that they typically think of the princess like fall in love, getting married and happy ever after. I see as actually people and think to myself what I do in their situations and what all of the Disney princesses have in common is kindness, compassion and confidence. Also I think of the Disney princesses in a different instead of being I love how they fall in love with their Prince Charmings which I still love it’s their characteristics I love about and how they go for their dreams For instance what I love about Princess Jasmine is how she is compassionate, strong and independent and she stands up for what she believes in.

12:08 to be fair, therapy isn’t a thing in fairy tale stories neither is trauma. But for, Ariel she doesn’t know any better that she’s been manipulated until she realizes she’s being used by the end of the first little mermaid film. Unfortunately Ariel started to act like her father for building a wall to protect Melody but a wall against Morgana’s magic? That’ll never do. Rapunzel did reunite with her birth parents but during the Tangled the series King Frederick had to take desperate measures behind his daughter’s back to avoiding losing her for a second time, for a fact like he nearly lost both his wife and daughter out of an act of a desperate father with no choice against the warning of Quirin the village leader of Old Corona (and former member of the Brotherhood and former guard of the Dark Kingdom) about removing of the Sundrop flower resulting the black rocks that he knew about the black rocks nearly destroying Corona. but until the end of Tangled the series season 1, when Frederick sees the actions of Rapunzel by ordering the guards to take action, and stood up to Varian’s automatons he realizes that she is a capable independence.

In The Princess and the Frog, Tina was told that a woman of her background should stay where she is by a white man, when she tries to explain how long she saved to buy her own restaurant, can be seen as racist and/or sexist. I have a friend who thinks it is creepy that young princesses tend to fall in love with older men, Arial is 16 and Eric is in his early 20s, for example.

I don't care about the historical inaccuracies in the Disney movie. If I actually wanted to know the real life history of native Americans, I would go on national geographic or something. I like pocohantas, but I choose to isolate it to being a good fictional story. Much of early disney is very racist and problematic but its also a product of the age. In order to move forward we need to take things as they are, enjoy them for what they were and appreciate the lengths they go to in order to accurately represent in the present in movies like Encanto and Coco.

1] Even as a kid, though I didn't like how young the girls were as they headed into marriage, I still understood that this was completely normal in the time periods their movies were set in. Honestly, the only one that really creeped me out was "Snow White", because she's listed as being only TWELVE, and using sentences like, "He was so romantic. I could not resist." 2] The movie with the creepiest song didn't have an officially recognized princess in it, though many fans, myself included, feel her character traits should put her on the list: "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". And 3] Even as an adult, I love how "Pocahontas" teaches viewers to appreciate the beauty and power of nature, and to work with it in a respectful manner: "You can own the earth, and, still, all you'll own is earth, until you can paint with all the colors of the wind." True, the movie is primarily targeting kids with that message, but it's really for everyone. I never thought of it as offensive, and no one I've talked to about it has, either. That includes an elderly woman in my apartment complex, who is half American Indian, though I can't recall which parent or tribe this heritage comes from. (11/24/2023)
