Thanks to a 16 year old (young) man, who I met in 1978 in Giardini Naxos in Sicily. He made me fell in love with the island, and of course him :) That romance have never been forgotten, so in 2007 my husband, who knows about that teenagecrush, and I were returning. We met an italian/canadian activities - hostess, who was smart, friendly and very beautiful. Our waiter at the hotel was very polite, and we got the ultimate service. The first evening, I said: "Buona sera, signor" to him, and ordred a bottle of redwine in Italian - that makes us "friends" instantly. In short: If you´re smile and are friendly, the Italians are also!

Agree with all except number one. I've been living in Rome for 20 years and Romans (like most big city dwellers) are not warm or particularly friendly towards foreigners.

Catherine York Romans tend to hang out in their gang or neighborhood, it is indeed very hard to make new friends in Rome. Also the lack of a decent level of English doesn’t help, unfortunately. Still Rome is to me hands down the most beautiful city in the world.

Very welcome Paul! This is why we make such videos! There is no better reward than knowing travelers find them useful 😊 And Rome is such a gem! When are you planning to go? And which one of the suggestions of our local hosts over there you liked the most?

We're going over Christmas. It's hard to say exactly which tip is the best but from watching all of your videos I get the most value from knowing when (not) to visit places and also I really appreciate that you provide the street address of places you recommend. Thanks again :)

Good to know travelers appreciate our local suggestions! Our Rome hosts especially, in this case :) Let us know if you have any further questions about the Eternal City and we will do our best to answer! Also, before leaving have a look at our Rome page (bit.ly/2wQOk73) because you may find some interesting options either to kickstart your trip or to deep dive in the city - depending on what you are looking for! It is definitely at least worth it a check 😉

Definitely go for it! And if you manage, try to go also beyond the city center: there is so much to discover also around the city, not just inside! For example? Gabriele - one of our locals in the video - recommends to take a look at Ostia: seaside, a large archaeological site, close to the modern town, that used to be the harbour city of ancient Rome, and a couple of interesting food places 😉

Hey Jan! Indeed it is :) remember: on Sunday till 2PM! Rome is fool of markets and shopping areas but there are a few that definitely need a local recommendation to be found 😉 This is a personal favourite of our Trastevere expert Gabriele (just in case, he loves accompanying travelers in the neighborhood bit.ly/2tcl9MK)

I have been there, seen that, done that… Romans have little cars. They drive crazy. On the roads they don't use indicator, and they park the cars like hell. People are loud! Gelato is tasteful. Rome is the place everyone must visit once in lifetime.

Heard there was lots of racism towards black people there
@Withlocals
@Withlocals 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mika, on behalf of the hundreds of Rome locals on our platform and on that of our whole travel community, we feel like saying it is not true. Of course forms of racism can happen everywhere and in the most unexpected moments/contexts etc. Italian people are on average very open and welcoming and racism has never been in the DNA of a people that historically emigrated abroad and was itself long discriminated. At the same time, it is also true that the current political debate over there is strongly influenced by far-right claims, which could be said of many other European cities and deserves a much more in-depth conversation in order to fully understand its origin and causes. All of this to say that if this fear is the one that discourages you to visit that beautiful city, then you should maybe give it a second thought! Ask our locals, try to connect directly to the people that are there, and they will be the best ones to reassure you that it is totally possible to have an amazing Rome experience regardless of your descent - as it should ALWAYS be :) Much more likely there will be other things you will suffer, as the loudness of Italians at the bar counter 😂 Hope this helps xxx

One of the world's most popular tourist destinations! Historically, Rome has always had a top heavy government, which allowed the residents and visitors to ignore their duties and responsibilities, resulting in traffic insanity. When in Rome, don't do what the Romans do. Obey ALL traffic laws. It's bad taste to add to Rome's street madness. If the residents and tourists ever accepted their responsibilities, the world would thrive - knowing that Rome's streets, adults and communities, are finally law-abiding, ethical and conscientious! Imagine!
@martinkent333
@martinkent333 4 жыл бұрын
@Damien Dante Residents have a fossilized freewheeling family phenomenon, where traffic laws are communally ignored and the excitement is dangerous. I am introducing percentage reader boards next to stop signs - that show the daily percentage of vehicles actually stopping. Traffic laws are a joke in Italy, so the economy might improve if community norms were ethical. Check out my KZbin Video "Child Terror in Rome Italy. It deals with percentage traffic signs, in Italy's capital city!

hi dude, its rome a safe place ? Talking to random stranger local ? are they any scammer or some sort ?
@Withlocals
@Withlocals 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andhika. Rome is a safer place than other cities both in Italy and worldwide, but it really depends on where you set your personal bar. There are also much safer places, too, as far as we could go about this topic 😂 You can talk in total tranquility with the locals, of course, but in general and regardless of the place, it would depend on how you approach people, what you ask and what you expect from them. If you want to tour around the city we would, of course, recommend connecting with our local hosts, since they are all carefully vetted, knowledgable and willing to show travelers their city. But this is only a take, the choice is all yours 😘🇮🇹

Do you atleast need to learn the language?
@Withlocals
@Withlocals 6 жыл бұрын
Directly from one of our Rome locals, Gabriele: "Ciao Cocoa! Definitely learning the basics for survival (for example: "Dove è il bagno?" that is "Where is the rest room?" in English) can help. But, if I can be very honest with you, I'd say that even more important is to be ready to communicate: a perfect knowledge of the grammar does not matter at all! What counts is to be willing to understand each other & connect :) We are friendly and communicative people, always ready to walk the extra mile to understand what you are trying to say / may need! So pick a cheap vocabulary and just come visiting! You will see how much more does a smile count than a 1000 words. Ti aspetto!"
