And of course Dolores is played by Monica Bellucci, who is Italian. So whether that came because Burton is dating her and wanted her in, or the fact that she is Italian and those bits in the first movie gave him the idea to use the first wife in the story and have her play the wife because she happens to be Italian, who knows, but it seems a bit too much to be a mere coincidence. For all we know the whole idea for this movie could have started because she is Italian. I could imagine a discussion between Burton and Bellucci with Burton doing something like joking that maybe Bellucci's ancestor was the one who had been married to Beetlejuice, then he starts thinking that she could play that character because she is an actress, then... 😄 Well, then the rest of the story almost pushes Dolores out and doesn't give her all that much to do, but he keeps her in just because she was the seed for the story. Okay, that thought amuses me mostly because so many people are complaining her being in the movie, and think Dolores exists in the first place just because Burton wanted to give her a role. But what if she was the reason he started to think making the movie in the first place, and without her there never would have been a second Beetlejuice movie? I know, just speculating, but as said I find that possibility amusing.

The black and white backstory segment is done as a homage to 60s Italian horror filmmaker Mario Bava and his classic films like Black Sunday aka The Mask of Satan. They can do what they want with him and rip off his head while still keeping him relevant. Cause... Is it just me or did the Delores plot seem a bit of an after thought. I kinda wish the murder house was brought in earlier and explored more. Astrid's friend would have made a better villain arch than Delores. Could have spent a bit more time in the actual model like before. They didn't seem to spend much time in the house either, other than the attic... I loved the acting and of course the signature look and feel from Tim Burton. Glad they still incorporated the stop motion animation and the dead husband being eaten by a shark was great. A lot of positive from the film but the first 40mins seemed a bit "meh".
@jamie16022 ай бұрын
Astrid's friend and Rory make two excellent villains. Delores was not utilized well but she's an excellent character. She does feel like an afterthought. But we had enough with the murder house and Rory trying to manipulate Lydia. Those two together were enough to let Beetlejuice cause chaos and once again have the audience asking "am I supposed to hate him, because I like the weird chaotic poltergeist demon". Delores would have been excellent for Beetlejuice three. In which Lydia and Astrid have to save Beetlejuice from his terrifying ex and we focus entirely just on Beetlejuice's backstory. Rory and the murderhouse take away from just how terrifying Delores is. Her entrance is great. The backstory is a lovely throwback to Italian horror films. She's a good actress, what little we see of her, and she is scary. The "deaths" are very Tim Burton dark comedy/horror. But it's so much in one movie. It's a "kill your darlings" moment. Delores deserved a solo film. Rory and the murder house needed the sequel. Delores needed her own movie for revenge. And that's how I'm gonna stick to it.

I don't think she was an afterthought... I think it was a leftover from the original script. Someone liked the idea too much to let it go when it no longer had any purpose to the story. The other two main story lines tie together while the one originally introduced almost completely disappears. Hence, why I believe it was the original base that wasn't cut. I also didn't like that origin story as I thought he was always a ghoul and not a true ghost. So, it just made less sense. It's one of those examples of failed Hollywood screen writing .

One of my favorite moments is when Delia is telling Lydia, "Where's that annoying goth girl who got on my nerves all those years ago? You need to FIND her again!" It showed that, after all this time, Delia really had come to like Lydia, and she was encouraging her to BE her REAL SELF. Which is what parents SHOULD do. I was really shocked when they killed Delia out of nowhere. After both Lydia's father AND Lydia's ex-husband dead, Lydia's step-mom getting killed felt like too much.

Baby Beetlejuice in a way was a nod to Edward bloom’s birth in Big Fish. One thing the movie hasn't explained after all these years is why, if heaven and hell exist in this world, why most of the dead souls are stuck between what is apparently purgatory and the houses in which they died. And there's more. When Adam and Barbara found their "loophole," did they get to go to heaven? Why did Delia get to board the train less than an hour after dying? And if Jeremy was a murderer, how was he able to avoid going to hell for over two decades?
@Mikumo912 ай бұрын
Unfinished business. Delia had none, the Maitlands wanted a big family so they had to stay. Jeremy probably also had something that kept him there.

It seems that it just takes SO LONG. First there's that 125 year haunting wait, and then there's the endless queues, and it looks like one of their definitions of suicide is "Doing something so stupid that you were just asking to get killed" as the Actor/Cop actually performed a stunt with what he KNEW was a live grenade. With the queues, it looks like people are waiting for SO long that they give up their place and try to do it themselves. However, there IS the Soul Train, which takes you to your next destination, and we never really see what's after that.
@jamie16022 ай бұрын
@@Mikumo91 Lydia and the Deetz became their extended family and thus "the loophole". So they didn't have to haunt for the 100+ years. I do love that implication that the big family was a found family with Lydia being a daughter figure they were always hoping to have. I love the addition of the Soul Train and how the stops are multiple afterlife destinations. And I also just love how fun it is.

Something you may have missed, since you didn’t bring it up when talking about the musical is that Lydia’s mom isn’t in fact dead. Lydia mentions that during her conversation with Delia about Astrid and Lydia’s struggles with her and their relationship back when Lydia was a teen. Delia claimed to have tried to fill in for Lydia’s “dead mother” and Lydia reminded her that her mom wasn’t dead.

In OG Beetlejuice when he is summoned to save the Maitlands, first thing he does is approach the Deetzs. They are embracing each other out of fear of the ghost. Loved the movie, but now I see a possible continuity error--don't ya hate it when that happens? "I always said if I ever did it, I was gonna do it once..."--he did it centuries earlier, with Delores! But--you can make that work--though I don't for one second believe Burton had thought it out that far when making the eariler film, he probably did stop and think when writing this film, and decided it wasn't a problem. As it now plays, Beetlejuice is hesitant during the earlier wedding scene about breaking his vow to himself, which being Beetlejuice, he was obviously going to break at some point. Since he really wanted to marry Lydia, to get out of the Neitherworld for keeps, the only thing holding him back was his earlier marriage to Delores. Being Beetlejuice, takes him like two seconds to get past that hurdle. As retro-continuity goes--not bad.
