The first tip is also true for game mechanics... App stores are full of reskins of hearthstone or other card games who sold a lot. The ones that remain for longer on my phone are those that present me a new challenging way to look at card games, through different mechanics.

Here are 2 tips I've found help: 1) Know your demographic - don't try to cater to everyone, if you do nobody will be happy with it and really neither will you. 2) Know what separates your game from others. Why should someone play your game rather than play yugioh or mtg? What can you do that the world of tcg's is lacking right now. Every game has it's own little niche, you just have to find yours.

Amazing tips! I totally back up these ideas. When it comes to copying, it's not just the copying that is bad, what is bad is that all the games will be the same and everyone would get bored of the games. We all need diversity. But anyway, keep up the great work!

Something I did: if you want to get better at making tcg’s but don’t want to make cards, you can just take football (soccer) cards for example, and make decks and rules for them. This is fun and also helps you get cool ideas for your own unique rules.

Your planet idea is brilliant i really want to make a TCG kind involving something like those planets but different make the planets like a God and they be the creators of all characters of that type of planet for example some planets are a water, fire, dark etc... type and are related to the God witch are the planets and are a dark, fire , or water type and of course the planets wont be the same. Thanks for sharing all your information about TCG's i just found your channel this morning and your information has been very useful to me and have gave me ideas

Great tips, especially the bit on originality. It's impossible to stress the importance of keeping things fresh. And while we're talking about inspiration, I should add that the ocean's deep sea creatures might be a great source of inspiration for you, Zack! Some cool card ideas/art could come from it. Maybe even an entirely aquatic planet? :O

i’ve wanted to make a tcg for probably five years now, i’ve had a couple attempts that were decent but they were always just basic card games, with attack and health and you have to kill your opponent and stuff. it took me those five years to come up with a unique game, and i have heavy lore and a bunch of card ideas for it now. trial and error at its finest. now i just need to practice the hell out of my drawing.

@GeorgiosD908 жыл бұрын
1. Copy MTG as much as possible 2. Learn from YuGiOh and have color restriction or else everyone will play the same cards, like shitty YuGiOh. 3. Learn from Pokemon and NEVER start releasing the same cards of different rarities, 1st ed, foil, non foil and so on. 4. Learn from Force of Will and never introduce broken cards or mechanics 5. Learn from Netrunner and keep the game simple with no tokens and bullshit, where mistakes can happen. 6. Learn from all the above and do not have foils, that get damaged by freaking AIR in time! Hope I helped! Good video!
@GeorgiosD908 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. I only meant, no one needs useless ugly reverse foils in Pokemon, when there are foils and non foils already or like YuGiOh super, mega, ultimate, godlike foils....... just foil and non foil would suffice....It is a mess... If I want to collect, I will pick the rare card, if I want to just play I will pick the common version, there is no reason to make more.

Hi Zach, I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now. I also am working on creating a tcg game and I stumbled across your channel when searching for tips and how to’s and home made tcg’s. I like your ambition and I like watching what your creation has evolved into. Keep up the good work. One thing I will say is good for you for designing your own art for the cards....im more of a math guy myself and have been focused on mechanics and balance/counter balance....I believe I have a good theme and a vision for the game....but my art skills are atrocious! I’m gonna have to go to fiverr and hire work for each card: these are the price range quotes I’ve uncovered .....$25-$50 for low end art....$60-$125 for commercially impressive level art......multiply that by a 250 card set and I’m looking at selling the car or taking a loan for the art alone! So for that little reason right there is why I’ve been fascinated with you and your channel where your just like f*ck it I’ll draw it myself! Keep it up......

I'm just wondering this because even though I enjoy it I find my friends that I generally see allot are not interested in tcgs and I sometimes have trouble will commitments with my tcgs.
@ChaosGalaxyTCG9 жыл бұрын
Hey, q1: I make literally everything myself, the only thing that I do with my friends and stuff for this game is have battles. Q2: i just love making cards! Art is my passion and having your own little universe that you can add to, make rules for, and create stories for is just amazing to me! (I know this sounds really cringey but) I can't really imagine myself not making TCGs, just the whole creative process is what I love to do haha! Hope this helps :)

I think something more on the actual development side is the age old debate of card flavor vs balance, games like magic way overuse flavor, making them pay to win, however games like the VS system focus much more on balance but in doing so loose some of the story interest of magic. its a tough choice but it must be made!
