I got VERY lucky at my local Petco. There is an employee there who has had tarantulas for over a decade and has owned dozens of species at many different ages. She is taking care of the tarantulas at the store because no one else wants to. They’ve had two (a Goliath and Brazilian black) for over two months and want to get rid of them because no one has shown interest and I befriended this employee and she’s going to be giving me a discount on the Brazilian black since she knows I’ve done my research and am passionate about inverts so I’m trying my first tarantula in just a week!!!

That’s lucky! I’m not in a place to get another pet but I saw a curly hair juvenile at my petco and the poor thing was being kept in the worst enclosure I have ever seen. No substrate, just fake grass a half log hide that was way too big. It’s water dish was bone dry. I told them and they acted like I was being the biggest nag in the world. Ugh. I am in that spot where I feel attached to this t, but don’t want to support them in anyway. I get my cat food there but I think from now on I will get it online from somewhere else.

I find petco typically has more interesting exotics than other big box pet stores, which isn't always a good thing if they don't have an employee like you're describing. Mine has G. emilia and hamorii right now. Typically they have some crazy ball python morphs and a boa constrictor or two as well.

Personal tip: Tarantulas are forgiving animals, if you're on a super tight budget but want a pet you can get a tarantula, as long as you have an enclosure and substrate you're good, pretty much anything that isn't paper can be used as a hide, don't feel pressured to have super exotic bioactive enclosures that others have, they have natural looking enclosures cause they can afford it, best diy hide I had was a ceramic tissue cover. Another tip is communication: if you order a T make sure you tell the seller about whether you want freebies or not, don't want a surprise sling.

@@wanik4 the problem with items 'from nature' is that they like to mold, as opposed to the items from store which consist of materials (e.g. cork bark, coconut, plastic) that are known to resist mold. So make sure to keep those items in a test enclosure for a few weeks to check them and avoid potential bad surprises when there's already a T in there. Unless you live in a place where cork/coconut trees grow, in which case I envy you 😆

the only thing about keeping a T being easy for people who aren’t able to put effort into pets is that keeping Ts usually goes hand in hand with keeping roaches or crickets haha so you’re not just getting one pet you’re getting a bunch

@@Trupiatoif you choose well you are in the nature. There is nothing better for your enclosure. I never sterilised anything from out cuz I'm picking dead wood and looking for no ants. This is the only thing I look to not kill my tarantula's. What you are saying about mold happens more to me with woods I bought on the store but never with woods from the forest I go. I'm keeping t's for 22years and never had problems with natural things from the forest but yes a lot with the store products. Nobody's do a sterilisation where the t's live that's simple. Just don't take fresh wood or it going to mold for sure. You have to know what you do but spend money on a store for moss, wood,... Its really stupid. Unnecessary money spent you can put on mew t's. Have a good day 😊

I love the way you nicely brought out the issue of “rescuing” a poorly kept T from pet stores. It can be very hard to resist when we see a T suffering, but like you put it- we may be rescuing one T but yet contributing to the problem unfortunately ☹️ My first T thatbgot me into the hobby was from a pet store, so I am grateful for that, but it was improperly kept and I was given less than ideal care instructions. I now buy all my T’s from highly reviewed and reputable dealers like Fear Not Tarantulas (my favorite) and net-bug.

T1DshutterBug I do the same thing with rescuing “bonsai trees” from Walmart, but I don’t buy them there constantly. Unfortunately again, Walmart won’t discontinue the practice of supplying “bonsai trees”. They don’t know that they are set up wrong, half dead or dead already when they arrive. And the manufacturers don’t car if or how bad they are screwing over the company. I don’t think the Walmart employees really care either.

I sort of "fell into that trap" mentioned in the beginning, but it had a different outcome. I once saw a B. alboliposum for sale in a pet store, and they clearly didn't know anything about theraphosids. The spider sat all curled up in a tiny plastic container, without a hide, in strong light, on kittie litter, and with a cricket sitting on to of it. this spider was not well. So, I ended up taking pity on it, and bought it. Now, if I weren't confident I could rehabilitate this spider, I wouldn't have bought it, and I don't recommend anyone buying spiders from people who don't know what they're dealing with, but if you know what you're doing, it's a different story. Anyway, I got it home and fixed up a terrarium for it. Had I known I'd come home with a spider, I'd have a setup ready and decorated, but it was a spur of the moment decision to bring it home, all I wanted was just a ton of crickets. For about a year and a half, it never left its retreat, it just sat on the cork sheet making up the background, and I didn't even see it drink. I reckoned it was stressed out, so I just gave it some peace and quiet, and held off on the feeding, it was pretty well fed, and didn't spend any energy, so that wasn't a problem. I kept a close eye on humidity. When I bought it, it wasn't in visible pre-molt, but finally it molted, became a totally new spider, and started to eat and become more active (as active as couch potatoes are). Now, before all this happened, I told the pet store a few things about what they should change in their spider setups, and they admitted they didn't really knew all that much about spiders, but they were happy for my input, and the next time I dropped by, they'd changed everything and given the various spiders terrariums and substate suitable for their nature, fixed the humidity and so on. Now, this is something you can do if you have the confidence that you know what you're talking about, but I can see how that's not possible for everyone, and especially not if you're new to the hobby. Oh, and the spider was a female, I could verify that through the plastic container - generally, spiders need to have a certain size before you can sex them, as we all know, and most people doing this look at a molt, so did I, but on adult spiders the females tend to develop a small pot belly, and although not always easily visible, it can sometimes be used as a quick way to identify the sex. But again, you gotta have the experience. If I should give an advice, it would be "watch more videos like this", and don't forget to read the comments, there's already plenty of literature out there, and most of what I've read is pretty accurate compared to my own experiences, but as is also mentioned in the video, this is a hobby that's constantly evolving, so there's always a chance to learn something new someone just found out. With that out of the way, thanks for a great video.:-) Ps. never use reptile bark as substrate for any invertebrate, often it contains natural pesticides like cedar oil etc., it'll kill your spider right quick.

She breeds kingsnakes as well as other types of snakes so eventually my office will become a tarantula/reptile/gameroom. I'm extremely pumped and you have given me the drive to get back in the hobby.

I don't have a T yet, and it may take a few years, because I want to do it responsibly when I get to that point, and that means knowing what I'm doing and respecting my roomie's aversion for "creepy crawlies". She's been my best friend for over a decade, and I certainly don't want to lose her over a pet, as awesome as it might be. One thing I would like to point out though is that I fully intend to get in touch with a local reptile and arachnids rescue program when I start thinking about it more seriously. Before I started watching videos online, I didn't even think there was one, but it turns out they're in a walking distance from my home! It is reassuring, because animal refuges usually are glad to keep their clients well informed, so that the pets they re-home finally get the comfortable forever home they deserve. They also need many types of food items, and might be able to help supply you or hook you up with trustworthy providers and local hobbyists for resources. I hope this was helpful, even if I don't have a T yet! Keep up the good work!

I'm just sharring my expereinces in these videos, other people may have different experiences. So get your info from multiple sources. Tom's Big Spiders is a KZbin channel and pod cast that has a wealth of great information. Check out arachnoboards.com and maybe join my facebook group and ask any questions you have along the way in there. As far as a first species...I always suggest Grammastola pulchripes (Chaco Golden Knee), Aphonopelma chalcodes (Arizona Blonde), Grammastola pulchra (Brazilian Black), or Brachypelma albopilosum (Curly Hair)...they are all generally very slow, docile and easy to care for and readily available and inexpensive...great first tarantulas.

Awesome tips video! I fully agree on the not buying from a chain pet store but I broke my own rule on that other day and did buy an avicularia from one. Not to essentially rescue it but I was in there for other supplies and seen it for $30. it was more of I already had an arboreal enclosure up and ready and it looked super super old. Really dull and lethargic figured give it a comfortable place to pass. what's $30 for compassion for age. Well get it rehoused day later makes a hammock and molts!!! Successfully too with 0 issues!! Still to young to tell male or female as molt had neither flap or non was just translucent where you'd tell. But it seems super healthy and ready to eat once those fangs get a bit harder

I got my first from Petsmart but I had already done a lot of research on her species (Avicularia Avicularia) and she was only $30 so thankfully I don't think I got scammed especially considering she is more than likely female and very healthy, but you are absolutely correct that the employees don't know anything! The employees who helped me with the adoption process knew nothing and I even had to test her temperament myself before getting her out of the enclosure again myself! However the next day when I called to get more information about when she had last been fed, I actually got on the phone with the main caretaker who was extremely knowledgeable and gave me lots of great advice! so I guess I got really lucky even though the adoption process was annoying

These are great tips! Just want to add that dollar stores can also be a great source to get things like fake plants and other decor items, as well as containers for enclosures cheaply (even cheaper than hobby/craft stores). I've been pleasantly surprised by just how many fake plants my local Dollar Tree carries. I have a snake who doesn't like to use traditional hides, preferring instead to hide and nestle in foliage, and the bigger she gets, the more fake plants she needs. I quickly realised that paying $5-10+ per fake plant was gonna get real expensive real fast, so being able to get an array of fake plants for $1 a pop as been a godsend. Haven't noticed a difference in quality, either. The ones I get from Dollar Tree are the same materials and quality as the ones I got from my local pet shop for ten times the price.

This might be less practical in a country as large as the US, but it's always worth checking the location of the breeder to see if doing a pick up is cheaper. I'm currently looking to get a couple of jumping spiders. The loction of the breeder means that the train ticket to go fetch the spiders myself works out cheaper than paying for postage. There's also the added bonus of being able to make a day trip of it.

My hardest finds are hides. Hobby stores are great but also give a looksy into home decoration stores your mom or aunt would wander into a bit. You can easily come across some fancy mini ceramic pot decoration, an open skull, and other cool decorations that might be a bit pricey but not outrageous. Tourist shops are also great for this. And don't underestimate the sheer amount of hide alternatives you can get from swinging by the aquarium section right next to the reptile section. You can find some real cool shiz more than you think.

The idea of combined shipping is a cool idea. However most of the people in my area are terrified of spiders and snakes (in the south) so I haven't discovered any groups or anything in my area. I have one friend who I think has one tarantula (a GBB), I just bought my first T in 10 years. I'm essentially a beginner again (bought a Seemanni). So not many "keepers" in my area.
