The hanging depicted there was actually a description of the hanging of Major John Andre whom Arnold had conspired with. Andre had been caught with all the evidence of Arnold's treason on him - and, unfortunately for him, out of uniform. That legitimately made him a spy and warranted hanging. Nobody really WANTED to hang him because it was something of a fluke that he'd been caught, that he was out of uniform not to spy but simply to get through the lines. Everyone wanted very desperately for Arnold to be the one hanged rather than Andre. On top of which, Andre proved to be an otherwise honorable gentleman and officer. But it was war and spies got hung, so Andre paid the price for Arnold's treason. People were crying when he was executed, not cheering.
