We're obviously aware of and deeply concerned about the global pandemic, and are choosing carefully what to publish as forms of escapism and entertainment to help ease thoughts of anxiety, and provide an alternative from the news. We are obviously NOT encouraging anyone to travel now or discouraging social distancing.
Have you ever been to these amazing underrated cities?

Poland and Slovakia must be the most underrated countries in all of Europe. I expected a bleak, post-industrial wasteland of polluted rivers, with German death camps dotted among the grey concrete stalinist suburbs. Instead I discovered Europe's largest virgin wilderness, quaint (and colourful!) villages, grand châteaux and museums filled with old masters.

Bruges, Ypres, Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels... all Flemish/Belgian (and Lille back then too) cities that at a given moment in history (and all at about the same time; which says a lot about the region) were among the 10 biggest European cities and all bigger than London - somewhere between 12th and 16th century. A region this prosperous has to be filled with architectural marvels, but yes, it is quite underrated. Though, I could've added many other cities to this list myself. Like Colmar (or better Riquewihr), Rouen, Assisi, Namur, Gdansk and Krakow (which aren't that underrated) and many German (especially East and North) cities.

Nearly everyone would agree with you I think! I’m Belgian, and it’s definitely one of my favorite cities in the country! If you’d rather visit a French speaking city in Belgium though, consider Liège! A hidden gem of Europe! It’s, arguably, not as picturesque as Bruges or Ghent, but there is a little something about Liège that makes it worth visiting! And the friendliest city in Belgium, I believe!

First-time visitors to Belgium tend to stay in Brussels and tire themselves taking trains to Bruges, Gent, Antwerp and Mechelen every day to see the sights they thought were in the capital. ;) Second-time visitors usually choose Gent as a base, since it's closer to the other historic towns. Or Antwerp, if they want to be somewhere hip.

As someone from Bruges that studies in Ghent, I can confirm that Ghent is underrated. No matter how much I love my home town, especially off-season, there is no denying that Ghent is more lively and vibrant, while also having a lot historical sights, art and architecture. To any potential tourists I can only recommend this: if you plan to visit Belgium in high season, stay in Ghent to avoid the overly touristy, almost theme park feeling of Bruges. There is plenty to do and see in Ghent, and if you want you can easily visit Bruges by train, its only a 25 minute ride. If you want to stay in Bruges, try to come during off-season. Also, don't remain strictly in the center of the city! There is plenty to see all around the city, and it's well worth to hire a bike for easy transportation. If you stay for a couple of days I would even recommend to get out of the city and explore the countryside by bike! There are lovely rustic villages like Damme (the old port town of Bruges) and Oostkerke, canals, and more. Especially Damme is worth a look, as you can climb the old Church tower, from where you have an amazing view of the landscape and the city of Bruges from a distance. Keep in mind the tower is off limits during the winter months though.

I would say Torino and Genova are the two most underrated cities in Italy, and they are both stunning: Torino was the first capital of Italy (and previously the capital of the Piedmont Kngdom) and it's packed with splendid royal buildings surrounded by the alps. Genova was the capital of the Republic of Genoa, and it boasts the biggest medieval centre in the world, filled with beautiful baroque noble palaces.

A city that should be on the list and very much plays second fiddle to the capital (Dublin) is Cork! 2nd biggest city of Republic of Ireland and 3rd biggest city on the island of Ireland. A charming, historic, yet increasingly modern city with some of the best food options in the whole of Ireland Also Drogheda...if you don’t want to venture too far from Dublin, but want a financially cheaper experience.
