That soundbite by Ozzy "hes playing this game like hes playing with god, but hes not, hes playing with human beings that are greedy and want that money"... literally most socially aware ive seen ozzy be, in his entire survivor career lol

I don't know if you can really call Brandon flipping on his tribe 'dumb' when he outright acknowledged that it could send him home, but chose to do it anyway because he found the alternative worse. Not so much a dumb move or a mistake as much as a change in his priorities

I agree soooooooo hard with this. This has always bothered me. Especially the way they all talked about it after like Ethan and Lex talking mad sht on him after he saved their asses.. I wish Brandon would have went to them and just been completely real and straight up and just say "listen.. I cannot help this homophobe get farther into this game" like I wish they would have realized that was one of the big reasons behind what he did.

I think one underrated move is when Zapatera throws the immunity challenge to get out Russell Hantz in Redemption Island. Russell didn't have an idol, he didn't have power in the game, and he could've easily been eliminated at any point pre-merge or post-merge. If he wasn't out by the merge, you know Rob wouldn't have aligned with him, so this game was a dead-end for Russell from the start. Why rush to get him out? You just fed momentum to the Ometepe tribe, who ultimately held down the numbers advantage against you and picked you off once the merge happened. This desperate cannibalization of your own tribe just to take out a notably strong player ended up allowing another notably strong player to wipe out your entire team. Seriously, Zapatera might be one of the worst tribes ever.
@muhammedautobahn214
@muhammedautobahn214 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Not only did Russell not have the idol, Ralph had it. Throwing the challenge then splitting votes was silly. Only took 1 person with a brain to flip and have another tyson elimination. Plus they threw the challenge when immunity and reward was on line. Tarp, chairs equipment etc. Zapatera stayed soaking wet the rest of season. Karma

Peridiam, you should think about doing a “what if” video. For example: what if Erik wouldn’t have given up his necklace? What if Dominic would have challenged Wendell to the fire making challenge? What if Tai would have played his idol for Scott? Etc, etc

I wish I could upvote this one more; easily worse than even the one's listed in the video (no offense, Peridiam); From what I remember (with Jerry), Lex would have been in a great position with a tie going into the merge and let that fall because Rob said something like "I protect you if you protect her". This was an all-star season, eight seasons in, so very little should dissuade anyone that this was anything other than a legendarily dumb move.

Candice Flipping in h vs v should be on here. She was not on the bottom of the heroes and if she stayed put Sandra would have flipped, Russels idol would be flushed, and the villains would have been picked off one by one, and she would have had a great chance of making it to the end and winning because she had little blood on her hands, while meanwhile she knew for a fact she would be on the bottom of villains and she was voted off right after Amanda and if she did make it to the end evrybody hated her.
@ANTMFabuous
@ANTMFabuous 6 жыл бұрын
You're wrong, Candice was at the bottom of the Heroes, she was getting 5th with them had they been final 5, they didn't trust her because she was so close with Cirie in pre-merge, so yes Sandra flipping may of saved the Heroes, but Candice is still on the bottom of the Heroes with Sandra if Sandra flips, so Candice was kinda in a lose-lose situation imo.

Wouldn’t Penner not agreeing to a final 4 with Lisa and Skupin be a dumb move? If he were to have taken the deal he might have made it to the final 4 or even the end. Since Abi won immunity at the final 7, Denise or Malcolm may have been voted out instead, making it play out but instead Penner and Carter are in the final 4. That means Penner could have had a 50/50 chance of making it to the end where he might have won. They could get rid of the challenge beast with no enemies or the strategic influential returning player. That’s just what I think.

A better Africa double bill would be that same episode as the Brandon flip, where Lex pisses off his ally Kelly by targeting her after wrongly accusing her of casting a vote against him (it was actually T-Bird), and as a result, Kelly flipped and almost got Lex voted out, and if it wasn't for Brandon flipping, it would've happened.

While Lex was able to survive the final 9 vote, he really should be included here from a gameplay perspective. Not only did he target one of his tribe members at the final ten vote, Clarence, he then lead a witch hunt against the person who voted for him at the final ten mistakenly targeting Kelly instead of the actual person which was T-Bird. The whole reason Kelly flipped to the Samburu's was because Lex was targeting her and she made the correct play of flipping. If it wasn't for Brandon being a bad player, Lex should have gone home at final 9 and boy does that change survivor history with him, big Tom and Ethan probably not being invited back to All-Stars.

I had just watched Season 3 because of your video on what seasons to watch before viewing Winners at War, and saw your part 1 to this series. I started thinking about Brandon's move while watching the video, which I told my mother about because it was so ridiculous, and I am so glad you started off this video with it. It was so stupid, because he would have made it at least one round farther than he would have if he was in with the other four from Boran. Ironically, he didn't even make it as far as the final five, but if he had stuck with Samburu, he would have made it to the final four, and probably further given how quickly everyone turned on Frank after Brandon was voted out, which he would have made worse considering his own dislike for him. After that, he would have only needed to beat Theresa and Kim in an immunity challenge. While both of them may have been capable of beating him, he would have been so much closer to winning had he just thought things through and not been so stuck up about Frank. I don't know if he was being petty or actually thought that was a good plan, but either way, his plan was ridiculously stupid.

Im sure that if Cirie was in the game when JT had the idea of giving the hidden immunity idol to Russell, she would totally wake him up from that fantasy. In the pre-merge they voted off three great players whi had the brain the remaining five lacked.

It’s funny to think that, if it was modern Survivor, the Africa situation could have been a bit different
@yaboi912
@yaboi912 6 жыл бұрын
I love me some Survivor Africa. The problem with criticizing Brandon's move is that we're applying a modern calculus to an old season. Brandon clearly had personal issues with Frank, and vice versa, and there was no way around this. We aren't at a point in survivor where looking past these kinds of issues for strategic gameplay is really a viable way to make decisions. We literally just witnessed a season in which Colby had a way to ensure he was a winner but chose to take his friend instead. We would NEVER see these kinds of decisions in a modern survivor, but in this age, I think its fairly common to make decisions based on your morals, values, and personal beliefs. Think ahead just three seasons to Survivor Amazon where Jenna is so angry with Rob for betraying Alex at the final seven that she blows up his entire game and makes herself a target. Or even four seasons after Africa when Sandra voted for John at the final eight when Rupert was a clear target for elimination and she needed to vote for Darrah. Maybe I'm just bias because I LOVE me some Brandon but I think this kindof move, and the move from the others that followed, made a lot of sense at the time. The kind of strategic play in early seasons is...spotty at best.
@BrettMKW
@BrettMKW 6 жыл бұрын
It amazes me that Brandon and Frank could not put aside their differences to work together in the game. People can say it was too early in the Survivor timeline to rationalize this, but Borneo had Rich and Rudy working together all game and Rudy was and still is a complete homophobe. Yet they put their differences aside and worked together and Rudy even gave Rich his vote to win. There's a lot of instances like that, where people care less about winning than about screwing over people they don't like. Even Cochran is guilty of that, he's arguably the biggest superfan to ever play and yet at the same time was 100% never winning the game as soon as he voted for Keith. And no, I don't think it had anything to do with him being afraid to draw rocks. I don't even think Cochran goes out 6th in his alliance. Ozzy will be cut whenever he fails to win immunity and Jim was actually planning to take him to the end as a goat. As for Sandra she had no idea Rupert was a target and thought the consensus was that the vote was going to be unanimous on Darrah so she threw her vote away thinking it wasn't necessary. If Sandra or Christa had known Rupert was a target they would have said something to him. I think they did that earlier that season at the Trish boot.
@BrettMKW
@BrettMKW 6 жыл бұрын
It's true that at this early point in the Survivor timeline that asking Brandon and Frank to work together was a hard sell. You'd think for a million dollars though they could just put aside their differences and vote out the Boran alliance, you don't even need to vote them all out immediately, just cut Frank once you don't need him anymore. All Brandon did was prove to be untrustworthy to the point that not even the Boran alliance wanted him around, so they got rid of him (easy to get the Samburu on board since Brandon just flipped on all of them) and then waltzed into the final 4 unopposed. I do wonder how much shit would have changed if the producers didn't screw up the final 4 challenge. Rudy and Rich are a weird case for me. To this day I don't think Rudy likes Rich at all, he's said some homophobic things about him during the show and after the show. I don't think much of it is ignorance as if my memory serves me right I think he's also racist. I seem to remember him saying something along the lines of "if he's not gay he could have other problems like he could be black or something." Maybe I'm misremembering this and if so I apologize. But either way he went on Survivor with the guy almost 20 years ago you would think maybe his perception would change but I guess not. Yet he was able to put aside his differences and work with him for the benefit of his game and he was within one mental lapse at FIC of winning the whole thing. People failed to work together all the time, even in modern Survivor. Cochran is the obvious example but what about Tocantins? Timbira had a 6 to 3 numbers advantage after Joe got medevaced into the merge and Coach/Debbie/Tyson were unwilling to work with Sierra/Brendan. The 3 Jalapao members all made final 4 and 2 of them sat at FTC. I am getting slightly off topic here, but I think modern Survivor needs more people moments like we saw in the earlier seasons. Nowadays it's all about big moves and advantages and heck you can't even get voted out at F4 anymore. The worst part is Probst seems to be buying into the fact that this is what the viewers want. I would have thought they learned from Cirie being eliminated due to NOT having an advantage at F6 in Game Changers but then Ben gets practically gifted idols and a saving grace by the producers at F4 who basically blindsided all the contestants with the firemaking challenge. It didn't give us a good winner when someone wins like that.

For the most part, now decisions in Survivor are more based on strategy than morals, but in Cagayan, just 4 years ago, Woo took Tony to the end over Kass because of morals and not for strategy. But I do agree that the value of strategy in making decisions was much lesser than it is now.
@BrettMKW
@BrettMKW 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Woo's an idiot for doing that, I also give a nod to Tony for that move. Tony basically told Woo that his game centered around honor loyalty and integrity. He then goes on to tell him that if he votes him out of the game, that he will not have any case to argue in front of the jury and they'll give the vote to Kass. I truly think he managed to convince Woo that he could win against himself and not Kass.
@MoxieInfernape

i know i've harped on it before, but i'm gonna harp on it again....Gabon, Marcus, second tribe swap, his alliance (who worshipped him like a God) had the numbers on both tribes, but he throws it away for someone he'd never worked with up to that point due to some tenuous connection he might've had outside of the game. He was golden. He had the game in his hands. Maybe he still would've lost anyway, but that's not the point. For where they were in that game and the tribe makeup and the stragglers they were up against, he had the game in his hand. Aaaaand....nope.

I thought it was equally dumb for Kucha to vote for Colby at that tribal council. Did they really think anyone from Ogakor voted for Colby? They should've voted for Jerri as her personality clashed with people and that would provoke votes. Literally, any of the other options would make better sense than voting for Colby, the strongest tribe member and most likable.

Colby did NOT make a "dumb move" by taking Tina. It's important to note his entire purpose for going on the show, which was to help him break into the acting world and get his face/name out there. He was playing for his reputation, not for the money. He 100% made the right call FOR HIM. I honestly have no idea if his acting career ever went anywhere or not, these days there is so much content everywhere.. TV, movies, streaming services, etc. so for all I know he could have a totally successful career that I'm not aware of lmao but regardless of whether or not it panned out.. that was his goal, and he made the right choice imo.

Peridiam that was a good video. Although I do wonder with Jeff and Kucha had they vote for Jerri instead of Colby who also had two known votes cast against her while Jeff had one that was known and another from Kimmi before she left that was never show to Kucha. Could that mean there would be a loophole where Jerri has more known votes so she Oulu still go home over Jeff. Even if Probst told the cast about the one vote that never showed it would still be tied and back then it would go to a quiz about wildlife. I have no idea If Jeff or Jerri win that mini-quiz but what do you think Peridiam

i notice another maybe dumb move or faliure at math move Its at the merge of Survivor Caramoan with the Corinne vote off Phillip is talking to Corinne about spliting Votes between 2 of the 4 member on the out in Eddie and Reynold but Corinne didnt want to split votes and wanted Sherri gone and was flipping on the main 7 allience Now if Corinne Just Let them Split the Votes Lets say her, Erik Dawn and Cochrean Vote Reynold and Phillip Andrea Brenda and Sherri Vote Eddie Then Eddie, Micheal, Malcolm and Reynold Vote Sherri it be 4-4-4 and if Corinne then Flipped to the 4 boys it would have been 5 sherri 4 eddie and 3 reynold and Sherri would have went home maybe the game would have been changed Idk

Didn't expect it in the top 5, but maybe when Chet was voted out of FvF, given he voted for Erik, the 3 (Tracey, Ami & Erik) could have voted for Ozzy, being tied with the 3 that voted for Chet, having a tie 3-3-1. Then in the revote Chet and ozzy can't vote so it would be 3-2 and ozzy goes home

"haphazard disregard" is the perfect description for Varner's game. 😂 I love the dive into Africa on this - I absolutely love that season, it's genuinely my fav, and I would LOVE to see so many of those cast members come back (who haven't already) to try their hand at things again. Brandon's game/non-game (and general demeanor) has always bothered me.

Can't remember if it was Africa or Marquesa, but there seemed to be more people relying on 'pairs' rather than larger 4-5 person alliances. And when they did realize they were up against a 4-person alliance, they did not take steps to merge the pairs, which if I recall would have given them a 5-4 or 6-4 advantage. Just seemed so obvious but I guess alliances were still a new concept.

As a gay man, I honestly don't blame Brandon at all. Living with someone like Frank would be awful, and I wouldn't want to do something that benefits his game. Brandon's alliance should have promised him that as soon as they had the numbers they would vote Frank off, but instead they treated Frank's comments as funny and liked having him around. As a result, Brandon probably didn't have warm feelings towards any of his alliance. Lex and Ethan seemed to be the guys that were standing up for him the most, so he wanted to work with them more. It's not great gameplay, but it's probably hard to take emotions out of the game when experiencing real life homophobia from a tribemate.
@TheMurrmursonbottle
@TheMurrmursonbottle 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed!! That stuff definitely goes beyond the game and it's kind of hard to work around someone who hates an entire group of people that you are a part of. I don't know if I'd be able to live with someone like Frank for so long, let alone work with him and possible get home close to a million when who knows if there's a chance that I could get it with other people instead
@eagerturtle4791
@eagerturtle4791 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly! We also need to remember that Survivor back then was a different time, where it wasn't all based on strategy. Brandon probably thought he would get a lot of hate from the LGBT+ community, if he didn't stand his ground against Frank. I think Brandon didn't want to be an alliance with him for personal reasons and to protect his public image (since Survivor was a more mainstream show at that point).
@Snailbarf

I dunno the show is full of examples of people setting aside their differences in pursuit of the prize. Richard and Rudy being the first. Do you think it was easy for anyone to drag Phillip the FBI agent through the game and live with him all day? It's not even about tagging them with labels. Frank and Brandon were just two stupid people.

+Eager Turtle blah blah blah, enough with your SJW rambling. When you're in a game for a million dollars, you suck it up and deal with it. And those comments ARE funny, whether you like it or not. If you can't handle jokes, then you aren't suited for a game that is entirely based around lies, deception, and betrayal. So yes, Brandon was dumb. I can list off many Survivor players that had to put up with people that they couldn't stand but they did and it payed off for them

Can we talk about the fact that Monica Culpepper, in Blood vs Water, Final 5 vote is one of the worst ever? She had saved Gervase and Tyson the tribal before so they trusted her, she knew they had the immunity idol, and all she had to do was to praise their alliance. Instead, she said she was in the middle and felt bullied. That prompted Tyson to play the idol to save Gervase and basically she gives the game away.

How is Cochran not on this list for flipping in South Pacific???!!! It was clear the other tribe were so "spiritually" connected that he would doom his entire tribe and finish 7th if he flipped, but his stern refusal to go to rocks in ANY scenario cost him the game. The odds were stacked 5 out of 7 in his tribe's favor to win the rock draw too thanks to the immunity wins and Ozzy's played idol. At the very least he could've told Ozzy he didn't want to go to rocks and to ensure he doesn't flip Ozzy should use his idol on him.

What about Survivor South Pacific where Cochran decided to switch on his team to forgo drawing rocks which in the end he didn't progress his game at all. He swapped based on feelings of being excluded rather of logic. Also, the same season all of the people who were in the alliance but not 1,2, and 3 in the alliance never having the balls to make a move until they "realized" they were going home. I think one of the dumbest thing you can do on survivor is to do nothing at all.

Where would you rank Parvati not telling Russell about her second idol on HvV? Just my opinion, but that mistake was exactly what cost her the chance to win, because just about the only scenario in which she was winning a jury vote was in sticking with her original alliance of Russell and Danielle, and in giving an already paranoid player like Russell even more of a reason to not trust how close she and Danielle were, the Danielle vote essentially torpedoed her chances of winning the season (And no, I'm not saying it was a dumb move for Russell, because he was already at the point where he was losing the season even if he had stuck to his final 3 with Parvati & Danielle)

To make it so the tribe had more direct control over who goes home. I mean, with everything else they are trying to remember out there, who is going to remember how many votes each player has, so they can use that to their advantage? The revote brought in different strategies.
