Steve Lukather... [my hero] For many many years was THE most underrated guitar player of all time. He entered his career as a musician at childhood, played in bands at schooling age, caught the attention of some established names in the session scene of the seventies who invited him into the club, worked constantly throughout the eighties as a session guitarist, released solo projects (and still at it having just released his ninth solo album) and he tours pretty much constantly... Oh and there was that Toto thing he got involved in! 😁 His career path has made him one of the most recorded guitarists in the history of popular music; his exposure to so many different styles of music has made him one of the most versatile guitar players alive and yet to this day nobody ever asks me if I've heard of him. Despite that however, since the internet came along (and the longer it continues to evolve) I'm seeing a lot more love for Luke these days (and rightly so) so it has me wondering if he's presently as under the radar as he once was. So now I'll offer who I think is currently the most underrated guitar player of all time: Dann Huff of the nineties band Giant. Dann is definitely cut from a similar cloth to Lukather and has been credited on a lot of well known songs; he even sounds like Luke on some of them! Dann's certainly my goto second favourite (when Neal Schon isn't looking).

@@federatedsubjectareas6904 Agree wholeheartedly. The first time I saw Toto perform in the UK was during their Through the Looking Glass Tour in 2003. - Ever since that cherry was popped I've prioritised seeing the band (or Luke solo event) on every tour they've brought to the UK since.
@joeydee826411 ай бұрын
I had to check To make sure this wasn't my comment. Dann Huff is so underrated, hardly anyone even knows him as a guitar player anymore. Just as a Country Music Super Producer. He basically took over for Luke as the "go to" LA studio player in the mid 80s after Luke stopped doing it as much.
@Stu04711 ай бұрын
@@joeydee8264 Those Giant albums are loaded with some great tunes and my god, Dann's guitar playing is stratospheric; I wish he'd get back in the game. I've little doubt that producing stuff for other artists is a solid way to pay the bills but I think his fans are well overdue for a self indulgent vanity project from him! 😁

Johnny Winter is for sure very underrated. He was the best contemporary Rock Blues Guitarist in my opinion. When you sit down and really listen to Winter he keeps the Blues from being boring. My favorite Original Delta Blues Guitarist is Furry Lewis. I grew up in Memphis and when the Stones came to the Coliseum in 78 they brought Furry a new guitar. It was the Some Girls Tour and Mick Jagger waited to play guitar on stage his first time so Furry could see him play his first time on stage. I was so blessed to be a teenager in the Seventies. Cheap Concerts with great Warm Up Bands. I am going to say this. No matter your favorite guitarist all those guys in the Seventies were all fantastic. Gary Richrath was a amazing Guitarist and a fantastic performer. I don't know why Gary isn't mentioned. Early REO Speedwagon was great. Very good live band.

I agree with everything in your post. In your post is the answer to why J. Winters was/is underrated and that’s because we were blessed with amazing talent all around us. It wasn’t just the guitarist there were many many tremendous bands that played second fiddle to the usual suspects. I remember reaching into binds of albums and literally purchasing whatever I blindly grabbed. I’ll mention Spirit and Randy California as an example of a band and guitarist/writer who were ahead of there time as well as underrated. Take Care.

In a rather straight forward-sounding verses, although somewhat far back in the mix, just listen to how Kath fills in the background with his guitar in the song "Movin In"--where most other players would simply strum along with open chords. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPPfaiapNZoopo

Terry Kath is my all-time favorite guitarist as I began listening to Chicago in the late '60s while in High School. As one whose hobby has been firearms for over 50 years, I can (unfortunately) say that more people are accidentally killed by "unloaded" firearms than by loaded ones!! Had Terry (literally!) taken LESS THAN TWO SECONDS to clear his action, he'd probably still be with us today!! (Fwiw, my training was that once the magazine was removed, you rack that slide back HARD, 3x in a row, in order to check, check, and RECHECK for a ("stray") round in the chamber.) Terry had a lot of experience with handguns, and sadly it is that "experience" that can cause one to get careless and over-confident, whether it be in doing something as simple as clearing a firearm's action or via skipping items on a "boring and mundane" pre-flight checklist, the end results in both cases being tragic and long-reaching in its pain, scope, and consequences!!

@@martinst8764 One of the best things about that solo is the chaos of it! It really does sound like ‘on the spot’ soloing. I don't know if he is under rated exactly, he always gets the nod by those who know. I think he tends to be more recognized as the vocalist versus the guitarist for PF. I personaly think Gilmore is the best or one of the best guitarists we ever had, it has nothing to do with ability to thrash or blazing speed solos, there is thousands out there that can do that. It is his ability to make his guitar sing and his musical creations is unmatched. The way I look at it growing up I ask what guitarist did I try to learn from the most and it was Gilmore.

I have been fortunate enough to see, meet or play with most of my guitar idols, and when I saw Nuno play, I was simply awe struck. He is cleanest, fastest, most consistent shredder I've ever seen. Literally not one mistake, yet still has TONS of soul, feel, and tasty phrasing. I was lucky enough to tell him face to face, and he seemed humbled by that. Super cool, chill, quiet guy. Not the tallest dude on the planet, but he stands head and shoulders above his contemporaries in my book. Cheers!

Great pick in Tom Scholz! I can admire that choice, although my list is for sure different. And soooo true about Brian May, although if I had to live in Freddie's shadow, I think I'd be okay with that. As far as Rock-N-Roll goes, it's hard to pick a dynamic duo more iconic than the showmanship and vocal prowess of Freddie Mercury paired with the brilliant mind and talent of Brian May to accompany him. Not only could Brain play the guitar, but he KNEW the guitar.... If that makes sense... I don't think you get that kinda mojo from ANY other popular, well know pair. Not Jagger/Richards, not Lennon/McCartney, not Page/Plant... Not in my opinion, anyway, but HEY these lists are all very subjective to ones own tastes anyway, right? My ultimate Top 10 underrated players...? Lindsey Buckingham (always second fiddle because of Stevie Nicks), Stanley Jordan (my mind is blown when I watch him play ANYTHING), Mark Knopfler (unique finger picking distortion tone that I don't recall ever being used by anyone else) , Django Reinhardt (jazz player that used 2 finger to do what most guys can't even do with 4), Trey Anastasio (not just a great guitar player, but a musical prodigy if you really want my opinion!), James Taylor (finger picking brilliance), Marty Freidman (the underrated shredder, because Mustaine is a spotlight whore), Junior Brown (just trust me), Reverend Horton Heat (that rockabilly spank) , and Chet Atkins... Yeah, guitar players might know who Chet is, but he never gets the love or recognition he deserves..... Next list, Best RHYTHM players!!

Unfortunately Bolin was a Heroin Addict. When he was in Deep Purple they put out a solid rock Album Come Taste the Band. When he was straight he actually played the Blackmore stuff very well. On the Come Taste the Band Tour Tommy got so bad on the shit Jon Lord said all he could do was strum. Also Glenn Hughes was on Cocaine terribly bad also. After a Show Lord and Paice got together and said they were ruining the Deep Purple Name and broke it up in the middle of the Tour. Bolin many times on his Solo Stuff reminded me a lot at times of Jeff Beck with a Jazzy Style. He was so gifted and he Overdosed 6 months after Deep Purple broke up. I still mourn the guy. You may have heard Blackmore's story of the first time they met at Tommy's House. Ritchie said the house was almost unfurnished. Ritchie said Tommy's Guitar strings were filthy and said you don't think those strings need changing do you. Tommy replied do you think I should change them. When Ritchie says you can play you can play.

I think the "sorta garbage" applies to some of the comments you are going to get regardless of the content. Its just the nasty world we live in now. I never was a Hendrix fan. I am wondering which video you have wherein your discuss Roy Buchanan. He is my favorite guitarist, if I had to choose. I am sure you know with music being a very subjective art, identifying the "best" players is a bit of a stretch. In my opinion, anyone who picks up a guitar with the intent of creating music has my blessing and support.

Brian May? The guy is on like every short list of best guitarists there is. The only way he could be less underrated is if everyone said he was better than Hendrix (which he's not, by the way).
@honeychilerider5 жыл бұрын
@@MisterFruitbowl He's really not. He's great, I love his work, but he's not Hendrix.

@@M66GUS Heh, you're just trolling, now.
@M66GUS5 жыл бұрын
@@honeychilerider Honestly. Jimi is so overrated as a guitar player. He was a brilliant entertainer - check He was the first 'Guitar Hero' - check He was inspirational - check He was emotional - check Was he a technical wizard - no Of course music is subjective, so if you prefer his music, that's fine, but being the first is not the same as being the best.Not when you've got 14 year old French girls able to play Paganini , Eruption or anything else perfectly. Personally, I believe Brian May is a far superior guitarist to Hendrix in every way bar perhaps, showmanship.
@honeychilerider5 жыл бұрын
@@M66GUS Well, first of all, "technical wizard" would probably be my very last criteria (I dunno, maybe before "great entertainer", actually) for what makes a great guitarist. We know from Clapton himself that Hendrix technically shamed him in front of people on Clapton's own guitar, so there's that, and countless guitarists and guitar-teachers will tell you that he was a technical innovator as well. In addition, he was one of the best and most interesting melodic guitarists of all time (probably my first criteria) and then one of the best rhythm/rhythmic guitarists of all time (possibly my second). People who could "technically" outplay him today certainly exist, but exist only because Jimi pushed the instrument so far in his day. I mean, I suppose there would be the odd John McLaughlin or whoever to out-shred him, but even McLaughlin himself was a huge Hendrix fan and spoke often of Hendrix' influence on him. Basically, virtually every argument that can be made for Hendrix has already been parsed a thousand times and he always remains on the throne. For a reason. But, hey, Brian May's good too.

Very underrated: Gary Moore Vinnie Moore Shawn Lane
@adamnelson96613 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree! Thank you. Shawn is one of the best to ever play! Love Gary, and Vinnie too! I don't think Shawn gets any credit outside of the guitarists who know of him. One I can think of is Derek Trucks, don't hear a lot about him...ever. Thanks for bringing those guys in.
@kurtsherrick20663 жыл бұрын
@@adamnelson9661 I grew up in Memphis and I saw Shawn Lane play when he was 13 years old. He was amazing. He was already a top guitarist. Unfortunately many times he was pushed into going blazing speed but Shawn had a feel and true soul when he played. He also was a unbelievably good Classical Pianist. It was so unfortunate his health went down at such a young age.

Geez, I had no idea you’d made so many “underrated guitarist” videos, I will have to check out all of ‘em. I also subscribed. Here’s another nominee - Leo Nocentelli, a long-time member of New Orleans funk band The Meters but probably best known to ‘70s rock fans for his inventive, distinctive solo on the Dr. John hit, “Right Place, Wrong Time.” I work in a retail store that plays classic rock on the store sound system much of time, and hear “Right Place” probably once a week. I always stop whatever I’m doing so that I can give that solo my full attention.

#2 - Brian May (Queen) has one of the most unique playing styles of any guitarist. No one plays like him. A commentator says he plays like a violinist. He also doesn't have 20 guitars on stage to show off. And never shreds.

the way he records makes his sound almost "classical" to my ears. in '74, i was at a "record world" party - about 10 new artists were featured. all i can remember is that the next day i went straight to the record store and bought the pink queen lp.(first one). LOADED with great tunes and sound!

Loverboy is one of those bands that I liked in the 80s then didn't care much for for a long time but love now in retrospect. Good picks here. Glad to see Jeff Carlisi on your list. Neal Geraldo all day for sure. Great player. One of my favorites for the last 40 years is Jamie West Oram from The Fixx. Dude has a way of interpreting guitar all his own and in ways I and a room full of monkeys with guitars could never come up with.
