Top 10 US Cities That Are Going Downhill in 2024
Are you wondering what cities will be going downhill in 2024?
In 2024, these are the cities you should probably avoid moving to. Don't take a job, don't buy real estate, try and avoid these places.
This video is my opinion/ prediction for 2023.
Real estate and the cost of living will continue to change at an accelerated pace for the next few years in these states. Combine those with crime and poverty, and you see why some of these US cities make this list.
Great Videos:
10 Most Terrifying Swimming Spots: • 10 Most Dangerous Beac...
10 Most Naturally Beautiful States: • Nature's Masterpieces:...
10 Deadliest National Parks: • 10 Deadliest National ...
Do you need a local Realtor for the area you want to move to?
I have teamed up with HomeAndMoney.com to help you find one that suits your needs.

And it's not even just municipal governments, there's plenty of blame to go around at the federal and state levels, as well as the wealthy elites from the private sector and their armies of lobbyists and the bankers that they pay to hide their wealth and dodge taxes.

Back in the mid 1970s my job required me to make numerous trips to and from D.C. and Baltimore. Back then I figured both cities as "Dead Zones" and swore I would never get any closer than the N.C.-VA to either of them ever again. However, life led me to live in The Peoples Republic of Maryland for seven years while The Lovely Bride and I worked ourselves nearly to death to get the hell out and back to our beloved home state of South Carolina. Because The Lovely Bride was undergoing treatments for a rather rare form of cancer, and I was under periodic care from VA we made several trips per month into and out of Baltimore. We learned early on that arriving in Baltimore before the sun was fully up or leaving after it got dark were bad moves indeed. If it tells you anything we NEVER made the roughly two hour round trip to and from "The City" unarmed! In 2019 we finally made our "escape" from the PRM and have no interest in ever returning!

Hey Briggs. You mentioned that Dallas is becoming a victim of its own success because of such rapid growth. I think this is happening to an extent in all 4 of Texas’s major metros because the cities struggle to meet the induced infrastructure demands of all these new residents, especially in roadways, electricity, and water. It’s certainly true that fast growing cities have their growing pains, but I definitely think Dallas is in the best shape out of every city on this list.

Flat out, this is the result of giving Corporate America a pass on all taxes. Most corporations worth their salt have legally taken advantage of tax loopholes so their tax liability is zero and most states and municipalities, in fact, give them generous benefits to relocate to their area. That's great if you want to create jobs, but corporations are where the money is. They should be responsible for paying a significant tax burden. And it's not like the tax breaks kept corporations from moving overseas anyway. This is the richest country in the history of the world at its richest point in its history. Citizens should not be living in poverty in broken down cities. This was a choice.

"Going Downhill" appears to be assessed only on the basis of debt to so-called "assets" of a municipality. An interesting criteria to use. And, I posit, porous/wholly simplistic when determining a future status of a city. I suspect some of those you identify are in/will be in deep trouble, but not solely on the debt to "assets" ratio. Using your "debt to "assets" ratio criteria, it would be interesting to see a list of "ten US cities that are going uphill." I'd like to see that as well.

No need for Detroit to be on this list as the city has already hit rock bottom and is slowly improving. The downtown area is getting really nice and the surrounding areas near downtown are being revitalized and getting nice. Since bankruptcy, Detroit has balanced its budget ever since, and the current mayor, Mike Duggan, is trying to reduce the tax rate for residents.

Where did you see that? Pittsburgh will likely continue to shrink, but I am highly skeptical that it will lose 50,000 residents in less than a decade. That would make it, by far, the fastest shrinking major city in the country and the fastest Pittsburgh had shrunk since the 1980s despite all evidence pointing to population losses leveling off. Pittsburgh's economy has improved significantly over the past 20 years and the city only lost 0.9% (less than 2,000) between 2010 and 2020, which was significantly better than the Census Bureau had estimated. I just don't see a 14%, 50,000 person loss happening given the city's current trajectory. Also your current population number is not correct. The most recent official estimate from the Census Bureau put Pittsburgh at 302,898, basically a net zero change since the 2020 census (down 60 residents).

The metro area is 2.37 million people. The number moving out of the small city proper, with its 3% wage tax, to the suburbs, with mostly 1% wage taxes, doesn’t really reflect “population decline” other than in this specific taxation scenario. From 1940-2020, the “city” shrank from 671,000 to 302,000, down 55%. But the MSA went from 2.06M to 2.37M, up 15%. Future growth will similarly not be in the city limits. For the debt, they will need to expand the “commuter tax” already applied to those commuting in for work.

@@rdspam Yes, I'm focusing only on the city itself. Allegheny country has only lost about 500k residents since it topped out in the 50's and the demise of the steel industries in the late seventies. It now sits around 1.1 million. I was downtown renewing a five year permit in June. The garage I usually park at, I got a parking place on the first floor. Five, ten, fifteen years ago at 7:45 in the morning I would be on the top floor of that garage lucky to get a spot. The city itself is dying and the politicians have no idea how to fix it. The problems have been mounting for decades and elected officials are more worried about offending particular groups than turning around the city. Example back in the eighties they tried to clean up the crime problem and the got sued for cracking down on the criminals. Now the criminals are slowly taking over many city neighborhoods. I know city neighborhoods that were nice places to live thirty years ago. Today it's not safe to walk the streets in those same communities.

Nice video, I lived in Dallas for 18 months, 20 years ago and didn’t like it then, with more people and higher home prices I don’t see any reason to return as there are no beaches, mountains or much culture. A lot of the places on this list fall into the category of nice place to visit but wouldn’t want to live there (NY, Honolulu, Chicago, New Orleans). Surprised Honolulu made list as I have been there multiple times and driven all over Oahu, always felt safe and never saw any crime. I did see some homeless on one beach but nothing like you have in other major U.S. cities. New Orleans saddens me because the French Quarter and Cajun food is so good with some of the most memorable restaurants. However once you are outside of the French Quarter you realize what a disaster the city and state are. Miami is a nightmare, unless you are a multi millionaire. I have been to Philadelphia a couple of times and remember someone on the plane calling it Philadelphia, PU. It just seems so old/dirty/polluted. It is sort of like NYC or Chicago without all the cool stuff those places have to do.

❤I’ve lived all over. Including Maine NH etc…. Problem with Maine is the people. Full of sociopaths and cluster B disorders. Could be great place but it’s the people that ruin it. Mainer’s ancestors massacred and killed a lot of native Americans and their own neighbors for land etc. What a greedy narcissistic disgusting place… the people there❤

Wished you would have mentioned Las Vegas. Unlike Chicago and Philadelphia, it possible to get around without a car and pay similar prices for housing/rent.

I think they mean it is impossible to get around Vegas without a car. It's true, I can attest to this. The buses are lousy and unreliable, and the Metrolink is really just for tourists and getting to the airport. I grew up here in Vegas, and moved away a few times to Philadelphia. I moved back to Sin City only due to the pandemic in 2020. After 2018-2019, rents and mortgages here in Vegas skyrocketed. At least in Chicago and Philadelphia, they have public transit that is efficient (Chicago I have heard about secondhand), and can get you to most places.

Yeah New Orleans wouldn't be a _great_ place to raise a family. To be fair, the streets and highways are a consequence of the high water table and instability of the marshy soil.

Yup. The city is obviously situated below sea level. I mean, when Hurricane Katrina hit, a good chunk of the city was submerged, especially when the levees broke near the vicinity of the Lower 9th Ward. Idk if you remember Six Flags New Orleans? Unfortunately it is abandoned to this day, especially since it shut down due to Katrina.

@KTJohnsonkidThunder Ironically I had no idea there was a six flags......till there wasn't one. Ninth ward is kind of a marvel sitting on a foundation of wooden pylons near a couple of centuries old.

Kensington is a tiny part of Philly. I think Philly is a great spot for college, post grad, or young couples. The city is growing literally everyday. The crime is just like every other city, but not terrible.

For people saying they are shocked at San Fran. San Fran is smaller in pop and has a lot of high paying jobs so their tax payers are loaded. They dont have ghettos they have ghetto people from Oakland and surrounding areas coming into town and committing crime. But the city is small so its not going bankrupt. Also , its a target for conservative media way more then it actually is terrible to live there.

I knew that Philadelphia would be on the list, crime is through the roof, but I didn't expect Pittsburgh to be on the list although they both have a lot of curruption going on. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state and so much history it's a shame that our big cities are both going downhill. As a Pennsylvanian it makes me very sad, I only live about an hour west of Philly and I used to love to go there to the Art Museum, the Zoo and Independence Hall, and the Franklin Institute, but sadly for me no more because of the crime. I would still consider taking the train to Downtown Pittsburgh though which also has many nice places to visit and we are Steelers fans. Pennsylvania as a whole has beautiful scenery, GREAT FOOD, beautiful State Parks, and Gettysburg. Love it here and often road trip vacation in PA, Upstate NY is lovely as well for road trips, the Catskills, the Finger Lakes and Niagara Falls!

Disagree. They’re catering to wealthy people now. Enough wealth and security on the private properties to let the purge run its course outside the Strip without even blinking. I do agree with what you’re saying but it’s an intentional choice they’ve made.
