Heh. Speaking of which, HAL 9000, how about the "airlock" scene in 2001? Given how omnipresent (and vaguely oppressive) the ambient future soundscape is in that movie, the *utter* lack of sound while Bowman is bouncing around sans spacesuit is really quite unnerving.

One of my personal favourite uses of silence in film is the end credits of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. I think people underestimate the importance of end credits music. It's really supposed to try and carry the emotion of the final note of the film for as long as possible. When I watch that film, I feel the silence gives me time to contemplate the events I've just witnessed.

It was all about the buildup. There was a huge amount of Zimmer's organ, and all of the blaring alarms, and when the inevitable explosion came I think the loudest sound I heard in the theater was the collective *gasp*. The abrupt drop in volume made the actual explosion so much more intense.

This is really great! Thanks for this! Not only do you analyse the movie sequences in a very progressive way, you also offer great suggestions for (re-)watching. It's so good that you are including movies from other cultures/other countries. It is even better that you take examples of reductions and not only constructions when it comes to the meaning making. Could you maybe include in one of your next videos also the use of landscapes / panoramas? In westerns (not only Sergio Leone's) it is always the desert and the shapes/silhouettes of the unique looking mountains; in Tarkovsky's movies, one of the famous scenes is the one with three waves of wind over the grass (the Mirror). I am sure that this could be interesting as a topic. Luis Buñuel also talked about it (in a different manner, however, that one should avoid it in combination with the human movement). I just think this could be an interesting topic.

He told things from the silence. is also a great film which talks about the poverty of an small island without the dialogue, a very impressive film. I don't want to exaggerate, but these videos really always manage to remind of the power, poetry and just sheer fun that the best of cinema has to offer. Since you're apparently reading the comments ;), could you - in case you're ACTUALLY reading - maybe consider making a vid/list about the most tense moments in film OR a top 10 of the best minimalistic films or something like that (yes, similar to this one a bit, but I'm thinking of the works of directors like Abbas Kiarostami, Jim Jarmusch or Ozu who could make brilliant films in which often very little happened). I of course hope, I didn't suggest topics that were already covered. Anyways, I'll go see "All is Lost" now.

They've said before that they'd love to do one about soundtracks, but they'd get absolutely killed by copyright claims. There's zero chance it would go live without having all the revenue seized, at the very least. And there's a fair chance it would end up region-blocked, have huge chunks of silence where the sound was forcibly muted, or even taken down entirely. It sucks, but that's how KZbin works right now.

It's a different kind of silence that wasn't brought up but I think ten should've been the silence in a loud movie - where it hits the softest point. In this case I'd put it to La La Land for the brilliant moment of the record stopping when they argue; Birdman when momentarily you aren't sure if you've reached the end of the film, or even one of the many beautiful incomplete silences in Hell or High Water. Reverse of that as well - the dream in The Artist when things are given sound to his absolute horror

Cinefix Homies!!!! First comment but it's an impassioned one! Danny Deckchairs' relationship fight in the kitchen with Rhys Ivan and Justine Clark... pure cinematic gold. So much is said as they rearrange and stock the kitchen without a word being said. Woulda loved a mention even if it didn't make an all time list. I'm a Canadian, not even an Aussie but that film has stuck with me. Everytime I see polka dots I still hear "What are you looking at???" .... "Polka dots."

I really like the scene from The Godfather Part III when Don Michael Corleone holds his dying daughter and screams out in silence. You expect to hear him scream out in anguish, but it's just his expression of shock and pain and nothing else. Good stuff.

I love that your lists include films which I've never seen nor, shamefully, even heard of. I would love a list of these movies: the "non-traditional" films, the "artistic" films, etc. So my idea is a list of must-watch films you (meaning me) probably haven't seen. I know you list many in each video but a comprehensive list for me to go down and check-off would be greatly appreciated so I can continue my film education. I would also love if, included with them, was some kind of genre explanation of them so I can know where they fit and watch them to understand why. Thanks for all of your work.
